LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

Dude, it might turn out to be a blessing in disguise for you. Check out the Samsung PS50C6500 - A far greater vfm set than PK550 IMO.
I really hope so! However the Sammie seems to be out of stock.

The PK was a darned good TV at the price level it was being offered, I shed a tear.

Yes, I was also getting it at a good price 61K with a 320 GB HDD thrown in.. Sigh!

I am planning to buy 550r but the extended warranty for this is Rs 10000 per year. Has anyone here bought extended warranty from LG. Please let me know how much you paid for it.

Paying 10K will be a waste of money IMHO. I got extended warranty of 2 years for 50PK550 for Rs 3K from croma. As I found out, croma charges Rs 3K for ext warranty of 2 years on all plasmas costing less than Rs 70K. And, Rs 6K for the ones costing more than 70K but less than 100K. Ext warranty charges are even lesser for LCD/LED sets.

Namaste and hello to all the proud owners of the LG 50PK550R plasma.

I have opened up this thread to discuss
- strengths and flaws (hopefully very few)
- calibration / picture settings
- firmware updates
- maintenance including break-in procedures
- general issues that we could take up with dealers or LG

Pros:
1) 50" full HD at a very tempting price
2) Excellent picture quality
3) Very good blacks and shadow detail
4) Color reproduction
5) USB 2.0 port
6) 600 Hz refresh rate. Smooth camera pans with very little or no judder.
7) 24p real cinema
8) Slim frame
9) Good remote
10 Sufficient connectivty options

Cons:
1) Temproray image retention that is unacceptable from a 2010 Plasma
2) Screen reflection
3) Green dancing pixels (aka Plasma dithering by many)
4) Average sound quality
5) No THX, Picture Wizard II, Expert Control on the Indian version (it's a murder)
6) Soft SD pictures

There are about 12 owners on HFV. I will try and list current owners (Vivek need your help here).

It would really help if owners can post to this thread. Also, suggest keeping price talks to other active threads.

The pros and cons are general views gathered from owners and my experience so far for a display at this price point. You are welcome to differ but in a healthy, friendly way.

Lastly, no competion bashing or LG bias.

Cheers!
Shaiju

What is the best priec for LG PK550 and also is the LGPK550R and LGPK550 the same models, Thank u

I have started noticing line bleed on my 50PK550. It is easily seen during the rolling credits at the end of a movie. Mine is a June 2010 model. Has anyone else noticed this issue?

Line bleed is there but hardly noticeable. I have to look for it unless the end credits are rolling. I watch more of the movie than end credits, so totally fine. ;)

Nothing to worry Nishant. Are you in dynamic mode or set the constrast too high? Posting your settings here might help.

Thanks Shaiju.
My set is yet to break-in, hence I'm still using 'cinema' with everything set to 50. I understand that line-bleed is common with plasmas, but I feel that it has slowly increased in my case and I wonder if it will increase further.

I guess its not just about end credits, if u are on a scene with a single color background and some text on it (like the beginning of a hollywood trailer where they show certification on a green background), you will see it.

I notice line bleed if I really have a hard look. Agree that the rating screen and end credits shine on this weakness. But seriously, do not worry unless it interrupts your normal viewing.

Try this and see if it helps.
Contrast: 68
Brightness: 52-54

It will not eliminate the line bleed but may reduce it a bit.

My display was tweaked through service menu by LG. Not sure if that reduces the line bleed.

Does the Indian version of LG PK550 have the QAM tuner which the american version has

Whats an QAM tuner??? anyhow most urban indian viewers get their broadcast content via a satellite tuner or digital cable, we don't pay too much attention to the built-in tuner. If QAM is like a freesat HD tuner, as it's there in UK , then no, the Indian version of PK550 doesn't have that

Hey Guys,

I'm new to this club ... i spent about a year thinking about a flat panel, and went with the LG PK550, great VFM and its, simply beautiful. :yahoo:

Besides, although i play the PS3 once in a way , movies are my kick.
Unboxed it yesterday, still have to see blu ray goodness.
Tata Sky HD channels are lovely.

Regular SD TV channel watching is not fun anymore.

Just sharing , i was offered an extended warranty from the service center at installation -

Its 7000 Rs. P.A - All parts incl. Plasma Panel. 50Inch.

Its available to all (mumbai i guess, but check wt. your dealer). The current scheme is -

Note all the below have to be within the first year, and prior to any break down. (10.2 Service tax applicable over and above). this is additional to the one year that you get with the set.

if you purchase 1 yr extended warranty in the first month of ownership - 15% off
If you purchase 2 yr extended warranty - 15% off
If you purchase a 3 yr extended warranty - 20% off.

I think im going to go in for the 2 yr extended warranty in the next couple of months. Of course, i'm at the risk of this scheme not being available in the near future.

Mazher R
Mumbai !

So this TV is not good for SD?

Thanks

None of the 50 inch TVs are good for watching SD content..The SD content pixelation is much smaller compare to a HD one.. So when the TV gets too big and you watch it 16:9 mode it tries to expand that picture to fit the TV screen where you see lot of pixelation , boxes etc.... But the quality is improving these days... I can tell from neo sports where it started and where it is now.. much better.
