Movies Discount and Offer threads :D

Bought the Jurassic Park Triology. The total came to 11 including shipping for Region free BD's. The shipping deleivery date estimate is given as 13h Dec'12 and there is no tracking number provided. Mentioned as it has been sent through Royal Mail. Anyone received it before the estimated deleivery date and is there any duty to be paid in Chennai?

No tracking with Royal Mail. Royal Mail and then India Post are sometimes ahead of schedule and sometimes behind. Worst I've seen thus far is 20 days behind schedule, best is 5 days ahead. Everyone's mileage varies. Customs duty is again hit or miss with Chennai mostly being a miss from the posts on the forum.

Ordered the trilogies Jurrasic park, Matrix and Spiderman...The estimated date is 25th DEC.. will have to wait and check whether there is any customs duty here.. hmm :)

whats the difference in steelbooks/extended edition/Theatrical Version in bluerays? why so much price difference?

Mainly the packaging which is a steel case with artwork instead of blue plastic. There, usually, is nothing extra with regard to content. Steelbooks look nicer too, especially when displayed face on.

Have a look at this What is a blu ray steelbook? or any other page that shows up on a Google search for more info.

Extended edition will usually contain extra's, alternate endings, other content not on the version shown in theaters (theatrical release).

Its all about packaging and content.

Steelbooks: The outer case is made of metal (steel) and has artwork printed directly on the metal on the front as well as back. The artwork is present even on the inside of the case. These are more like a collectors item and is therefore priced higher than the regular editions.

Theatrical Version: The movie released in theaters is known as... This when released for home entertainment comes as Theatrical Version. This is generally shorter than the extended edition, which is released later.
Example: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Theatrical Edition) - Length: 178 minutes.

Extended edition: The same movie gets another release with extended scenes and content for home entertainment and is known as Extended edition.
Example: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended edition) - Length: 208 minutes.

Sometimes, special editions are released in theaters with additional content, like - Avatar (9 minutes of extra content along with 3D).

Thanks for all the references...they seem to be a steal for sure. But what about shipping charges? How much will it work out to? PLus credit card charges for foreign currency transactions are to be added on to the cost too, right?

Almost all of us had the same questions when we started down this route. :)

As for cost's etc. there was a fantastic working by "just4kix" on either this thread or the one regarding customs duty in this subforum. Search the forum, or just spend some time browsing through these posts. Trust me it's worth it.

Cost often works out cheaper than what you pay in India. If you escape the customs duty, then very, very cheap. Sometimes even if you get hit by the duty it still works out the same if not just a bit costlier. Besides the foreign version is often the unbutchered version and usually with better quality packaging and transfers than the ones put out in India.

I have mentioned somewhere in this thread or the customs duty thread. Indian BD prices vary from 799 to 1499 with most being priced at 1299. If 1299 is taken as the standard price, then any BD priced $12 or below on Amazon.com (US) or 9.5 or below on Amazon.co.uk will be cheaper to import inclusive of all charges - shipping, customs, forex charges on cc, etc.

However, as stated above, Indian content is often censored. I am unsure whether they show those stupid/irritating anti-smoking banners in the middle of the movie. I have three or four Indian BDs that were priced 799 - they are Disney releases and are quite ok. One thing though. Prices on Amazon drop continuously and sometimes there is a steep drop for a clear out sale. Thus does not ever happen in India.
