Movies Discount and Offer threads :D

Just booked my BDT220. Trying to find some good deals for disks on amazon and flipkart. There are some titles which are available at a cheaper price on Flipkart as compared to Amazon. The only difference is the publisher e.g. Disney (Amz) v/s Sony (FK).

Does this make any difference?

For non controversial movies which are not 18+, mostly the content are same. But if you are looking BDs, sometimes there is difference in PQ and/or sound quality. So for regular movies if the price is OK or better in Indian sites, better order from them. There are other sites like Snapdeal, Infibeam, Indiatimes, landmarkonthnet etc who also gives a good deal for them apart from Flipkart.

Sometimes the special features may be missing. Some movies could also be censored quite heavily (see review comments for The Reader at Flipkart).

My BD of Pirates of the Caribbean - Curse of the Black Pearl (Disney) sourced from either of Flipkart or Infibeam only has the movie, nothing else. Can someone who has an imported version of this BD confirm whether their BD has extra content?

I also noticed that the subtitle tracks supposedly available via the BD menu were limited to Russian only when the soundtrack was in English.
Using the BDT-220's options however, I was able to unearth a whole bunch of subtitles including an English subtitle track which could be displayed even when the soundtrack was English, something the BD menu was configured to not display.

Don't know if the imported versions have this feature/bug or whether it's just the Indian version only.

PQ, SQ all appear to be fine. Doesn't appear to be any censorship apparent, but can't be sure until I see a non Indian version of the BD.

Just came across this.
Amazon.co.uk is offering 3 blu rays for 17 pounds.Offer open till 28th April. I estimate around 700 to 800 titles in the scheme.
Link below:

Thanks

Do note that the titles on offer keep changing everytime the current 3 for 17 promo ends and a new one begins. Some titles remain on the promo list, others drop off and yet others that were on the list become available.

Usually, but not always, the Indian BDs are single discs only. I have not purchased many from Flipkart/Landmark - just 5 or 6. The single disc/movie only package is usually a replica of the original unless there is objectionable content. So whatever extras, outtakes, deleted/extended scenes are there on a US/UK disc are mostly found on the Indian version also. But I made a mistake with the purchase of "The Avengers - 3D" from Flipkart. The disc contains the 3D movie only, no 2D movie, no extras, no director's commentaries, etc.

As said before, most movies are generally censor free, meaning no additional cuts, etc. But the Indian version has to conform to what was the theaterical release in India. I have found subtitles in Indian releases also. There is a Hindi and Tamil track as well.
-------
It is not completely fair to condemn Indian releases because they are single disc only. Most BDs sourced from Amazon UK/USA, and especially the older movies, are single discs. Only the new releases are multiple discs. The BD-Live! feature is universally absent on Indian release and so is the Digital/UV copy. But that is understandable to an extent.

Thanks just4kix.

How do you hunt for deals on bluray? Which sites are your favorite haunts for BDs? Have someone coming over so kind of a one-time opportunity for me to get a few discs from the US.

I usually stick to Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Flipkart and Landmark-on-the-net for purchases.

Blu-ray.com is an excellent source for hunting deals. I maintain an Excel sheet of movies that I would like to buy and then I put a target price on Blu-ray.com (you need to be registered with the site). For instance, I want to buy Les Misrables. The Amazon.com price is $23.98 whereas UK price is 15.00. Both are too high in my opinion. I have placed a target price of $12/8 on blu-ray.com. If and when the target price is reached, I get an email.

Then again, on Amazon, I try to look for deals such as "Blu-Rays under $10" or "3 Blu-rays for 17". Sometimes, you find wonderful deals this way. But shipping cost is a killer. For example, on Amazon.com, assuming an order of 6 BDs, the average shipping cost per BD is $4.82. If the BD is $9.99 and shipping cost is $4.82, it is nearly 50%. Ouch!!

I have the first 3 POTC series in BD ( got it under one free with one offer). No issue with the PQ, soundtrack or subtitle. May be your BD had an issue, or may be the player could not decode the subtitle file for some reason.

just4kix , when I was reading your post it seemed an article on share trading !!!

You can start a Blu-ray sharing library with other Mumbai /Pune hifivians ... :D

The EN subtitle does not show up in the BD's menu if the soundtrack is EN. However if I go into the BDP options, I have the option to select the EN subtitle and it displays regardless of whether the soundtrack is EN or not.

Anyway, not an issue, I was just curious if this was only on the Indian version or whether the imports too had the same issue. From your reply it does appear that I could have a BD with a bad menu, doesn't matter too much though.

Thanx jsmithe..

Ordered it alongwith the Stallone collection, which is also available at less than GBP10 for 5 good action movies. Plus Airplane 1&2

Oh I went for the DVD for the Airplane series. The BD is released only with the first one. So if you want the second one as well, DVD is the only option as of now.

It would be folly to order BD of old movies just for the sale of BD. Check the reviews on blu-ray.com. Some transfers are not very good and merely upscaled versions. So it is better to buy DVDs and save money.

^ True that. I tend to get carried away with only BD on the brain and need to keep in mind that sometimes DVD is a better value for money.

I normally tend to go for DVD for all those movies which I want to see may be once or so (kinda occassional). The ones which are having some great visuals, I will go only for BDs. Sometimes I go for BDs as they are almost as cheap as DVDs, like American Pie collection, the difference was some 2-3 GBP.

For old movies, I don't want to pay anything more Rs 250-300 per movie for BDs and less than Rs 200 for DVDs (landed cost). So anytime there is an offer for the movies I want to see, at around that price, I go for it. Anyway, I already have more than enough fodder to last few months considering that on an average I get to see 2-3 movies a week.

The reason for me not paying more than that is that, many of these movies otherwise available in India at Rs 100-200 for DVD and sometimes at around 400-500 for BDs.

The hype created by BD such as 6 times better picture, 10 times better sound, etc. is true. Nevertheless, if one is watching a movie on an upscaling BDP, purely on a TV of 42" or below and no HT system, the advantages of BD are not that great. Even with an HT, it will be sometimes difficult to spot differences between Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS-HD-MA. Now this statement will evoke many emotional outcries but just think about it ... when being totally immersed in watching a film on projector/HT combo, where the attention is focussed more on the video, it is little difficult to note the difference between the DD 5.1 and HD 5.1 sound.

I am naturally aligned to the "BD buying" club but of late, I have ordered DVDs when I thought that BDs did not have any significant advantage by quality and specially when price difference was too high.
