My home theater

Hello Mdharan,

Once all is done all one needs is the popcorn.

Rest seems to be fantastic. (Wish I could do something like this in my home)

It is very time consuming and complicated for the likes of me.

Hi its a great setup and that too from Erode..... I am also nearby from Salem.
Its been wonderful to see....
How you managed to get all acoustic materials and where did you get it?

Thank you Manoj.P, Vinod.R, Amarendra for your response to my thread.

Also thank you Jaivelu, Since you are in Salem i welcome you if you are interested.
I used 2" Glass wool rigid boards of Twiga from Coimbatore, here is the location link & also i used jute fabric for wall coverings which is traditional furniture cloth.

Vinod,

A dedicated entertainment room can be made in around 3 months or so with proper planning and it is not much complicated keeping in mind that one can get a lot of live help from fellow members and internet while needless to say that there are already so many threads about the making of a private theater at home.

Agree with Vinay. Its not that hard.

All we need is patience and planning. If not planned, things turn bad, causes reworks and waste of money.

Vinod,

I understand, it looks quite daunting before we start. I was the same way when I started out to convert our room into a theater. My first attempt was build a screen and mount the projector. Video was my main focus then. For 2 years, I used my Sony HTIB. It was still alright. Setting up for video is that simple.

It's the audio that takes up lot of thinking and planning. I did modify my setup afterwards to accommodate audio. But even then, its not that hard once you start. There is tons of information on the web, with lots of pictures etc. All one need to do is identify a room, get its weak points and work on it. There is always help available if you ask. :)

Hello ! Vinod.R,
As manoj and Vinay said if you have passion towards big screen entertainment and if you decide and identify the room you can start building on your own.
Earlier i finished building my house 4 years back itself and constructed a shed on my terrace 30 x 16 for multipurpose use and i was only little imagined about a mini theater sized screen and i left a plain wall for the future projection.
I bought the proj 4 months before and i was bit confused either to go for a dedicated room or to use in front of the TV by buying a motorized screen in the living room.
I decided to construct a dedicated room, before starting the construction and as shown in the first photo i used to project it on the plain wall and decided the size of the screen, seating position and proj position. Since it is huge hall with metal sheet it took me only about 3 months to re alter the size with a toilet inside and all the heavy insulation for double ceiling.
It is a bit difficult period for me but never the less my family are enjoying now, for me with the great satisfaction i can say its my HT.
Thank you for sharing my experience.

Murali.

With these kind of brilliant trial runs, the chances of going wrong are very less especially if forum members are kept in loop for suggestions.

mdharan, that's an awesome setup. Among the very best i guess. We want to hear the entire story. How you started, how you narrowed down on audio, video and then the acoustic design. That will be great information for all future HT builders and they'll thank you for it. Please do share, post as much information as possible at your own pace.
That said, do you have a strange dusty smell in the room? I have done glasswool paneling (removable, screwable panels) with jute fabric finish. But whenever i walk into the room there is this strange dusty smell. It is certainly not glasswool, i don't know what it is - i haven't put AC in the room yet. I get it vaccumed regularly but the smell remains. I can't understand how to get rid of it. I keep the windows open all night but the dusty smell persists. Any ideas from anyone folks?

Hello sash ! Thankyou for your compliments ...
My father (passed away) is a owner of 2 theaters, we 3 (2 older brothers) now we split our properties and one theater is running in common, in earlier days I used look after them, so the interest grown that way i guess.
So I planned a mini theater setup during my house construction itself, after 3 years i worked on the interior now and converted the shed in the terrace to HT.
Audio reg I auditioned Polk,Magnet,Warfedale etc and I preferred Klipsch F-30 & sw-450 sub with my Denon 1911. & Video reg I got preview of optoma HD 21 in my place for 3 days and tried different sizes on the wall and finalized 13' x 6'.9'' as the screen size which is also very good projector, but i ended up with Pana 4000 because of its features with remote no need to go to the proj every time the ratio of the movie changes.
and i bought the proj before construction itself and i almost watched different movies around 100 hrs on the plain wall and i decided to construct a curved wall sply for the screen, i think it is excellent enough for me with the dull white painted wall itself, even though i saw many demo rooms and my friends HT with high gain screen and many forum members suggesting the screens.
Reg the acoustic for concrete walls i cant find again the site where i got the detailed drawing i will try again to get the link. As you can see in the photos i split the walls by 2' x 2' with 3.6 inches of plywood and i pasted 0.6 " of thermocool on the wall to prevent heat from the wall and leave 1'' space between thermocool and 2" rigid glass wool from TWIGA and closed the wall with 8mm plywood, over that a 4' x 2' chip boards of 8mm with 6mm foam covered by jute fabric pannels nailed on the plywood.
Here in my HT iam also getting a pungent smell for almost 3 months now , i think it is slowly reducing i think it is from the varnish used for the wood combined with plywoods anti bug treatment chemicals.

Thankyou...

Thank you mdharan. Kindly post the acoustic plans if you find them.
I checked out Klipsch F30 - they look monstrous, hope they sound great too.
1. You said you checked out Magnats - which series? What were your impressions?
2. What are your views on the sound of Klipsch F30? I have a Klipsch synergy 12 subwoofer and it is just awesome, it shakes (literally!!) my room at just 40% volume, so am curious how your setup sounds, are the towers able to fill your big room?

It'll be great if you can tell us your impressions when you auditioned Magnats, Polk and Wharfs and why you narrowed down on Klipsch.
Please ignore if i'm asking too much of your time :)

Hello sash,
I bought the speakers and amp a year earlier itself for my Hall with LG 55" TV which is 16'x16'x9.5' -F30 is very good enough for the hall with mild raise in the volume, but for my HT which is 24' x 15.25' i need to pump up the volume to a little higher level but it very good and powerful enough for me, it gives good crisp punch in my HT also. I am enjoying every bit of the speaker.
I forgot the model of the magnet & others since it is a year earlier and F30 blown all the others away at that time, so i was impressed & immediately i bought them.

Thanking you.....

Wow. How did I miss this. That's one humongous home theatre!

'Kalakeeteenga' Murali. I wish one day I build something like this.

I would be in CBE sometime in June. I wish to drop in if possible. Hope you have no objection! Meanwhile please do post more pictures. The pics posted earlier dont do justice for your hard work I feel. Actually I am not a fan of blue carpet. I strongly suggest air conditioning of your room if not already done.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
