need help in restoring the old HMV fiesta record player

I have a hmv fiesta popular . however the sound from the speaker is very low . what could be the cause
The possible causes are:
1. Check all the 4 transistors. They are AC 128/176 power transistors, AC 157 and CIL 157.
2. Check the cartridge. It may be damaged. You can replace it readily by EEI cartridge.
3. Check the stylus.
4. Check the speaker by a Ohms meter.
5. Check the transformer and is output voltage. If it is much below of 12v, change it.
Best of luck.

Between preamp (where cart is connected) and power amp section (after some selection switch wires) there are 2x BC547 transistors with some coupling electrolytic caps. These caps are generally busted or aged. Audio signal from preamp passes through these caps to power amp.

Dear Nilotpal,,,,,,

Our member Avishek has already posted the image of the shop where u probably get the spare parts. It's S C Kundu and sons, 27 CR Avnu, Kol -72. Phone - 033 2212 9684. I have called them today. they said that they have NEW (dont know original of not though!) spare parts. they told me to come with the sample.

I am planning to go to the shop. I have my dad's HMV Stereo 666. Its a 1976 model. Many parts of it demands repairing/changing due to its age and trial of my DIYing in my very childhood. Parts I needed are cartridge (I hv broken the original one, I have managed a replacement cartridge though, but it is very bad sounding), Stylus, Pulley, Idler, output power transistors PT4 PT6 and driver transistor AC188 (GOD please help me to find these 3 Ge transistors in kolkata ).

The player have a nostalgic value for me. I still remember when dad used to play records in it and i watched how the record is revolving and the tone arm is progressing towards the and.... such a childhood thrill.

I cannot remember how actually it sounds, because I was too little then. when I got the player in my hand I found that it was already serviced by local repairing man by several times and some parts are already replaced with wrong item. I restored some. But never find the parts that I have listed.

Another thing, as i have stated in the last paragraph tht it is now fitted with some wrong parts. Basically coupling capacitors were changed by someone and fitted with wrong caps (dont know why!!!). It made the player sounding crappy (certified by DAD!). I am attaching the schematic of the player. There are some caps that has no value marked on it. I want to get some sort of idea of the values of the caps. It will be good if anyone post some other Indian Market HMV player's schematics from which I can gather any idea.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I am from Kolkata. DIY related discussions from any kolkata guy is very much welcome...

PT4 and PT6 are vintage Philips metal cap output transistors. You'll have to be extremely lucky to find these in the spares market in India. Long long ago, my Dad built an amplifier for a friend using this output pair and I recall, when they blew out, he tried to get replacements unsuccessfully. Eventually I think I recall that he substituted them with an AD161, AD162 pair.

AC187 / AC188 should be available. I have seen these Germanium legends in some shops. Back in the day, they were commonly used in small radios and tape recorders and in some powersupply circuits. My first ever amplifier was built around an AC187/AC188 output pair.

The rest of the TT parts may be difficult to get. You may get lucky and eventually find the stylus and idler, not sure about the pulley.

If you are adventerous and have a bit of a deep pocket, you can source all the stuff required, from abroad.

The circuit looks interesting but is not that clear. Its also drawn from back to front :)

Can you post a more clear and larger version?

Sure. The circuit was drawn almost 16-18 yrs ago when i was a little school boy. Give me some time. I would post a fresh copy

Thanx reubensm :-) w8 for sometime to get the freash copy of the circuit. Why not u post some diy memories of ur childhood, any circuit, pics etc sort of thing. It will a matter of pleasure...

Take a look at this. This is the very first amplifier I ever built, was in Standard 4 at the time. I still have this amp and I managed to dig it out, wire it and actually play it after all these years. The video of this is also on the post. Enjoy!!

My 1st diy (class 8): repairing dad's HMV STEREO 666...... Still in place, but dead.

My 1st DIY complete product (claas 8): TBA810 amplifier...... Sold to a friend.

2nd DIY complete product (class 10): LA4440 based cassette player. The main pcb was modified by me that time by just using practical knowledge. I had no theoritical knowledge that time. Those mods still make me astonished. However I refurbished the product last year......

@reubensm: Check ur thread... I hv commented there

the output transistors on the amp are AC187/AC188. I still remember that the black heat sinks were the very first items we asked for on the list, when we were at the store to purchase the components. I can recollect how happy I was when the guy took them out of the drawer and handed them to me.

talking of HMV, here's a vintage HMV advert (which used to come with LP records)

@reubensm: ta, childhood thrills. I can understand the feelings. Its like tht i hv got the most desired thing in my hand, just dont need any other things, and dont want to spend time anywhere, just want to work on this.

I had some memories of childhood of such type. When i found stylus in local shop, when i first got the IC driven bass/treble circuit (such a thrill tgat time!!!), when i bought the LED VU meter for my very 1st DIY cassette player, i had such feelings.......

the output transistors on the amp are AC187/AC188.

@reubensm: can u please arrange AC188 and PT4 PT6 pairs for me? Cz it looks like i will not get those kolkata. I have a replacement suggession of those later two power trasistors, just google "replacement of PT4 PT6" And u will find my thread in diyaudio website... Please go through there

I am not sure about PT4 and PT6 but let me run a check on these anyways. I am going to the electronics market on Saturday this week.

Hello to all, Am a big admirer of this forum & really surprised with the knowledge of fellow members.

I recently bought a HMV Fiesta in non working condition, without the power cable.
From what i can judge by a casual look at the mechanism, the Idler wheel is heavily worn out.
Am still in doubt on how to power it up i.e. via mains or 9V DC battery/adapter.

Will share detailed pics of the player in evening.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
