Orthodynamic Headphones & all things planar

I am going to try the TPs out of Maverick TubeMagic D1, Essence STX, Marantz CD 63SE and later on try with uDAC-1 just to see how it drives them.

I don't have high-end headphones to compare against. Only AD-700, MS1i and of course Fostex T20 (still some problem with my soldering "skills". So not yet completely ready :o). I can of course compare them against my small collection of IEMs, though it may not be fair. But then, all's fair in love, war and comparisons ;)

Santosh,

Looking forward to a detailed review on your try out...

TIA
Kittu:rolleyes:

^ I can imagine myself running around with the TPs trying to do all that I've listed. But for writing detailed reviews, I am appointing "golden ears" iaudio to write a comparison between AD700 and TP, rallynut for listening impressions out of uDAC (and myself for getting lost in the music) ;)

I'll try to add whatever I can, of course.

Looks like my udac is gonna take some time to arrive! But hoping to use the TPs with the Pioneer hp out.
Right now, its alternating between anc 7, ad700 and Yamaha Yh2s! He he, ;-)

@iaudio : how is your review of YH-2 coming ?

My setup would be :

Source : Xonar STX

Amp : EHHA (fingers crossed)

Headphones : Beyer DT880 600ohm
Yamaha HP-50A
& NAD RP-18

I would compare it with hp50s yamaha, and hd650 senns.
source - nad cdp analog out. DAC stuffed inside lyrita offers much less gain.
amp - lyrita pre's headphone out and hk amp's headphone out. Possibly ehha if gurubhai is kind enough to get mine done too in time :) - otherwise I will borrow his.

My setup :

Source :

Audinst MX-1 (coming next month)

Amp :

Audio-GD Compass

Headphones :

Sennheiser HD650
Yamaha HP-2
Yamaha YH-100

@anm : Surely if we get one build completed you will have the EHHA for the loaner period.

@Brendon : Congrats for the new DAC. Have you already ordered it?
Seems like a good unit.

Guru, i will post my impressions soon. But in short I have to say I really enjoyed your YH2s and I am very thankful for your initiative which gave me a taste of ortho magic.

Brendon, guru, I have already sent the YH2s to Rallynut. He must be getting them today.

@all,yes,i finally have my hands on them :),..the YH2's i mean :indifferent14:.

@gurubhai,very generous of u to be letting us sample isodynamic tech.beautiful, circa 1978??.man,..was like five yrs young when these babies hit the streets :clapping:!!lol.also agree 100% that listening to diana krall on these is special indeed.very nice

@sachi,of course we'll pick up the shipping charges ;)!!!

regarding them YH2s,..balanced,beautifully so.a very laid back kinda, smooth creamy sound.of course criticising fit/finish on something thats almost as old as me,a little defeatist,no?this only because they sound so much more focused with some pressure on the headband near the temple region, very organic and lush, their delivery.just imagining a listen to them new is something!!!

very needy of amplification.i found myself havin to crank up my CA640A V2 vol close to 1'o'clock just to get it to start singing.for a reference i listen to my M50's at approx 9'o'clock and beyond,if that!!a good amp must certainly make this blind listeners with their brilliance :p!!the bass is very accurate, mids lush, highs non edgy.very good sense of space.only way to describe them in my subjective way would be as,...balanced.hell,i even played some hardcore psy trance thru them and it does such a great job rendering that :p!!!

will ship it along after another day's listen.very good stuff this, the era,the application of this technology, the bellini design, and the delivered sound.truly smooth.audio in them times had a soul to it all ..

^That's great! Perhaps, I will end up buying an ortho this month itself. Sparrow should be able to keep up to it, as most suggest. :)

Thanks rallynut for your impressions.I sent you the details of haraakiri, whom you can send these afterwards.

Now we wait for iaudio's hopefully detailed impressions. :)

Great impressions Rallynut ! :D

Now awaiting iaudio's detailed impressions. :)

@gurubhai - I canceled my order for the DAC. My bike got stolen so I had to get another bike to replace it. All my funds for audio upgrades have gone down the window. :(

At least the replacement bike is much better than my old bike so I dont feel too bad my old bike is gone. :)

^dang! These crooks have no regard for us audiophiles. :(

I was going to ask you to consider the pico DAC some of which are on sell on HF for about $200 but I guess it would have to wait for some time now.

Brendon, Sorry about your bike man! Bike or motorcycle? Yeah, just like camera and cowon got stolen last year and ate away from my budget for a new bike/audio purchases etc. I know exactly how it feels.

Ah, its cool. I have the TPs audition to look forward too. ;D

My bike was worth maybe 7k. But I had to spend 35k for a used Karizma. :P

Anyways the Karizma is a much better bike than my old CBZ. :D

nice Brendon..that's cheap for a Karizma for sure. I ride a 92 Yamaha Seca 2 (600cc, 60 BHP) here, paid just about as much as you did for your Karizma lol..Its world's apart from the 150cc Pulsar I used to ride back home.
Haven't been able to ride for the last 3 weeks as my license expired..hoping to be back on the bike early next week however for which I am stoked!!

Guys, I might hang on to the TPs a bit longer, long enough to see if I can swing the ALO 8 wire chain mail cable if Ken can find time to hook me up with it. Will go by his store later this weekend and see what's what.
