Panasonic UT50 (2012 model) Owners Thread

Dear All,

Many thanks to kind and knowledgable people in this forum. After researching the forum, my choices boiled down to these 4 nice Plasma TVs. (I am also quoting the price of the TV as on 3rd Nov 2012 in west delhi, along with freebies) -

1. Panasonic 50ST50 - Rs 1.06 Lakh (Plus Diwali Gift - Panasonic Printer + (1+2) year warranty + Hungama.com coupons)
2. Panasonic 50UT50 - Rs 76,000 (Plus Diwali Gift - Panasonic Printer + (1+2) year warranty + Hungama.com coupons)
3. Samsung 51E550 - Rs 78,000 (Plus Diwali Gift - 3D Blue ray Player + movie Pack )
4. Samsung 51E8000 - Rs 95,000 (Plus Diwali Gift - Samsung Galaxy Tab 7, 310 )

I first went to Samsung Showroom and saw 50inch E550. I was quite disappointed with the picture quality on the demo piece because I had read many good reviews of this TV. The picture looked dull & washed out and too soft compared to some of the fancier LEDs which were displayed alongside. Perhaps the lightening in the showroom was too much, or perhaps the piece was old or perhaps the picture calibration settings on that TV were not correctly adjusted. But it certainly didn't have the 'wow' factor which I was expecting. The showroom did not have the E8000 for display so I could not see that but the free galaxy tab with E8000 was particularly enticing. They quoted Rs 78,000 and Rs 95,000 (plus the freebies) for E550 & E8000 respectively.
I would not like to discourage people from buying this TV or anger the current owners, I am merely implying that the one Demo piece which I saw was not up to my expectations.

Then I went to the Panasonic's showroom and saw 42inch UT50 and 50 inch ST50 on display, and by god they both looked gorgeous !!! I was very happy with the picture quality on both the sets. I was pleasantly surprised with UT50 display because it was indistinguishable from ST50s one. One thing to note is that unlike the Samsung's showroom, the Panasonic showroom was not very brightly lit. It had normal lightening, one which you expect in normal homes. In my opinion, the lightening in the showrooms made a significant difference in picture quality of Samsung & Panasonic's TVs.

Then there was this tricky part of choosing between UT50 & ST50. I told the showroom lady that I didn't want the free printer and she reduced the price of ST50 to Rs 96,000 and UT50 to Rs 68,000. Then for me this was the comparison -

ST 50 - Rs 96,000 + 2 3D glasses + "Louvre" filter on the screen to reflect ambient light + Built-in Wi-Fi
VS
UT50 - Rs 68,000 + 1 3D glasses + Wifi-ready (Wifi works after purchasing a dongle).

Now I know I would not really watch that much 3D, I would not really use the Wi-fi and when I demo'ed the TVs, I couldn't distinguish the picture quality in normal conditions. And the price difference between the two was INR 28,000 which is not a small difference. So I went ahead and purchased the UT50.

The TV is yet to be delivered to my house, so I don't know if I have made a good choice. I will surely write a review once I settle in with my TV.

Many thanks again to all people for their valuable time & suggestions,
Take Care,
Rohit

You have choosen the best for you based on what your priority is. If you look at some review sites, you can see UT50 being compliemented and appreciated to be on par with ST50. Many have also said that both looks similar on PQ in a side-by-side comparison.
There could be some over-hyped marketing terms used to differentiate between ST50 and UT50, but in a real world, they are almost similar. The only difference I heard is that ST50 might be slightly better (only marginally) in a brighter room and that is only due to the anti-reflective screen filter put on the screen glass.
I can even say that LED TVs at similar price range doesn't come close to that (of course in less ambient light rooms). My wishes for your purchase.

Rohit, you have taken the right choice and purchased the TV that suits you. The PQ difference between UT50 and ST50 can be discovered by experts only and that too when playing true 1080p stuff. There is no point spening your hard-earned money for something that someone else says is better. Trust your insticts, heart and your eyes. I agree with shanmune. For a normal person, I would say that the ST50 provides better control over reflections, that is all. And this can be easily corrected by having drapes, light dimming, etc.

So all the best and enjoy. I hope you have read about the image retention issues associated with plasma. Take good care, especially for first 200 hours and adequate care later on.

Although its about personal choice but may be spending 28k extra for ST50 might not be worth it unless you are going to be watching lots and lots of blue ray Hollywood stuff or worry about super fine differences...

The deals you have got are among the best anyone has got on this forum so I suggest you grab it fast :yahoo:

Many congratulation to you on your Purchase..Panasonic plasma is the last word in television..being a Panasonic owner I feel it everyday..The screen is damn tough even if you throw accidentally any hard object on it. So you can rest assured...BTW is it 42UT50 or 50UT50?

It should be 50UT50 as 42UT50 is available around 60K or maybe even less. I got my 50UT50 at a similar price 3 months back alongwith HT offer as got the dealer to knock off his margins..

Dear all,
I have also zeroed down 42UT50D, Any one having idea, how much it would cost me if i buy it from gaffar?

Thanks

My sister who lines in NCR was looking for led models from Samsung. I just told her that she should look at plasma before buying. Nothing else. Today she came back with 42UT50 with 2 pairs of 3D glasses, printer, etc., for 69k.

Another question to you is that is it ok to buy 42ut50 online, like flipkart or infibeam?
What is your recommendation based on your experience.

Thanks for your help

Hey Kix,
are viewing experience of a TV and a projector ( like epson device) same?

No way. TV is nice for casual viewing. It has great blacks, superb contrast, full high definition image, rich colours, etc. But how can a 50" image compete with a 100"+ image. That said, the projector image does suffer from lower contrast, low blacks, etc. Both have different purposes. But got the true movie experience, projector with a kick ass sound system is the way to be.

Hi,

Firstly, many thanks to all the users who have commented on this thread, as it helped me in making decision to go for this model.

I have bought 42UT50D on 09-Nov-2012, got it delivered 9th evening, and pana engineer came and did the installation (table mount only) on 10th afternoon.

The mfg date on the box and on the tv label is Aug 2012, and I checked the usage detail, and it was used for 1 hour 12 mins, and 4 counts (this after running tv for 45 mins). So, I am happy that I got a fresh set :-)

Have few questions to the gurus out here:

1. Pana engineer told that break-in (low contrast, low brightness, low color settings, with zoom-2/zoom-3 to hide channel logo) is not required, as new models are advanced. I am anyway following this. Please guide if I should still continue running break-in settings for 200+ hours?

2. When viewing, Panasonic banner/ads come up ad-hoc, and stay for around a minute. I tried to find how to disable this, but couldn't get a way. Please guide how to get rid of this.

And about the cost.. got it for INR 56,700 with 2 x 3D eye wear + Panasonic Printer + some lucky dip coupons from the dealer as Diwali offer. Guess its a good deal looking at the thread so far.

Thanks!

I have also used these low contrast, brightness settings and now sort of started liking them in my 50UT50... Zoom 2 is good enough for 200 hrs + not watching any channel for hours together.

2. When viewing, Panasonic banner/ads come up ad-hoc, and stay for around a minute. I tried to find how to disable this, but couldn't get a way. Please guide how to get rid of this.

I have not noticed this... These ads come while watching normal TV

Awesome deal you got buddy.. congrats and welcome to the club..

Not many people buy TV online as there have been cases of out of stock, damages during delivery, demo pieces etc etc... better to stick to offline mode.

1. General consensus is that 200 hours is good enough.

2. Banner appears only at startup. You can disable it at menu ... setup ... display settings ... Viera connect banner ... off

I am getting a quote of Rs 75,000 :indifferent14: for 50UT50 along with the free printer and other deals. Has anyone got a lower price than this?

This is the standard price everyone has been getting - only rare cases people have been able to get lower (you can see the thread) through some dealer or through contacts (like I did)... try and see if you can bargain to 72-73K to close the deal.
