Panasonic UT50 (2012 model) Owners Thread

Sure, but the thread loses its focus. This thread should be for owners to share usage tips, service issues, warranty issues, caliberation, etc. etc. Btw, has anyone even done caliberation? I will be doing it post 200 hours. I have already downloaded caliberation video from AVSforum.

All pre-purchase matters should be discussed on another thread, there are many existing threads for that.

Can you share the link to download calibration video? Also do you know if the settings apply to Indian UT50 as well since some picture modes and settings options are specific to US/EU and might not apply to the models being sold in India/Asia..

today evening got the 42UT50D installed - wall mounted. currently have the local cable-wala, which itself is not very good. played some 3dsbs demo clips which I downloaded - overall the 3D was superb. need to finalize some HD DTH - Tata / Airtel / Videocon.

the box has stamp of "Imported" in Sept'12 and sticker on the TV mentioned manufactured in Aug'12 - wow.

the engg did some settings as per his way: contrast +40+, brightness +15+, normal, etc.

queries:
- I didnt find option to see running hours
- how to check firmware ver
- initial configuration set (contrast, brightness, mode etc)
- on the first page of manual (book), there is a a note saying or IR and its not covered under warranty. a big concern.
- any other considerations, or especially break-in tips ?
- in one of the online US manual, it mentioned of 2 x ferrite core supplied for connecting USB & HDMI cables, to avoid noise & interference. I didnt find that in my box. anyone has clue ? http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/TCP42UT50.PDF - refer pg. 8 & 10.

experts pl guide. thanks.

Over at the AVS forum there is a dedicated UT50 settings thread, you could try those. However note that those are for dark rooms. So you could try your own caliberation which will be most suited to the ambient light in your room.

Edit: those settings are for US model. The adjustment range may differ from Asian model, so use with caution.

Running hours: I picked up the details from elsewhere in this forum itself. This is what I normally do:
Press info button 3 times while pressing volume minus on the TV.
After some time service menu appears.
I just press 2 and then OK, wait some time and repeat this step.
A chart appears, scroll down to RHS of last line of text.
Press mute button for three seconds, run hours, minutes and number of start up appears.
To exit, power off from wall socket.
Please refer complete detail in thread "checklist to avoid buying demo..." page 7.

Firmware version I have never checked. My set is always connected to Internet and it prompts for update when available upon accessing Internet function.

During breakin period in put it on normal picture mode. Do not run on dynamic mode, contrast not more than 50, brightness 0.

From what I have read IR is not normally covered under warranty.

Note that US model and Asia models are different, model number prefix are also different. Features and accessories could differ. User manuals are also slightly different.

Got my free HT(SC-XH170) yesterday after exactly 30 days. I enquired them over phone and they confirmed me and asked me to pick it up or they can drop which is chargeable(175/-).

Nevertheless the HTiB is not that bad and can be a stop gap solution till you get a proper HT with AVR and all. It can only play DVD though and can be upscaled to 1080p using HDMI. I have not tried playing anything with USB as such.

thanks friend. on the running hours, I found the article and did a check y'day night. it was 10+ hours, which is fairly OK with age of 1 day !

bringing brightness to 0 was becoming very dark, but if its a Best Practice, then can again try. any other best practices are welcome, during breakin or in general.

is there a guideline ?: how much time constantly to watch a program/channel with fix logo ? or some video have black bars! how much time the TV to be watched at a stretch ?
excuse me, am I being a bit over paranoid ?!

again I played more 3dsbs movie clips and was amazed.

Congratulations on your purchase - what was the price? Yes the 3D looks awesome on this, probably because of Full HD. Tata Sky HD is being used and praised by most people for its quality. Some mention that Videocon is most cost effective & has max HD channels. Please check.

queries:
- I didnt find option to see running hours - now you have got it.
- how to check firmware ver - its 2.5 or 2.25. Dont bother, it will ask you to upgrade if you are on older version when you connect to internet.
- initial configuration set (contrast, brightness, mode etc) - I reduced everything by 15 from the default 50,0 settings for break-in period...
- on the first page of manual (book), there is a a note saying or IR and its not covered under warranty. a big concern. Yes that's true and hopefully you would have done the homework about it before buying a plasma. IR is still a possibility with long static images through continuous gaming or deep channel logos.
- any other considerations, or especially break-in tips ? Some people recommend break-in slides which I didnt really use. However I did zoom the picture to avoid logos etc in initial 100 hrs or so.

May be difference bw US model and Asia

Enjoy the buy and welcome to the club..

Good for you - yes the HT is a decent one and I have been using it for more than a month now...

thanks. I paid 63K for TV with 1 glass, and 9.8K for 2 extra glasses.
details posted at http://www.hifivision.com/television/3176-price-thread-157.html#post413060

have been reading a lot about DTH, and getting inclined towards Airtel HD. will update my decision.

But one concern on IR, the DTH logo would be constant on screen  !

Yes, you are over paranoid. :)

Most channel logos goes off during commercial breaks. In India they break for like 5 minutes every 15 minutes! So why worry? :) Except for movies most programs don't last long, so you are switching channels pretty often anyway. If you are watching a movie and the channel logo does not go off during commercial breaks, you can change aspect ratio once in a while, this will shift the logo position. Just take care during the first 150 to 200 hours and you will be good.

Moreover there are certain inbuilt features to prevent image retention. In menu >> picture > advanced settings >>
set Side Panel to [high] (default 'high') (also read the explanation on screen)
set Pixel Orbiter to [ON] (default 'on')

Enjoy your new TV!

Edit: re your concern about DTH logo:
So long as the logo is transparent I don't think there is cause for worry.

Contuuing from previous post, thsi link gives very good info:
Break-in, burn-in, and image retention - Samsung Plasma TV FAQ
Kindly note that this is not official Samsung site. This is not to discount the information it contains.

In brief it says that a plasma tv is susceptible to image retention during the first 200 hours or so because the phospohors are still 'fresh and delicate'. After this 200 hours or so of being ON the phosphors are supposed to mature and age sufficiently, and have stabilised.

This site recommends static image / logo display to be limited to 30 minutes during the running-in period.

I have narrowed down to 42UT50 or 50UT50 . Need some help.

1.50UT50 power rating from tests show 240W in average usage, how much is 42UT50 usage?

2.Viewing distance is 8-10 feet . Is 50inch too big ? .

Finally visited Panasonic brand shop in koramangala ,bangalore .The guys have pathetic and worst attitude and then dont want to sell anything .Either take it or leave it attitude , they don't even speak to customers properly .

Got a quote of 66K for 42 inch and 77K for 50 inch . They said HT offer is not available now .

Is HT offer discontinued and any other place to get best rates in Bangalore ?

2.Viewing distance is 8-10 feet . Is 50inch too big ? . Usually people would buy 42 for that distance. However that's very Indian thing... no matter what size you buy, after sometime you get used to it.

Response in red above..

thanks a lot. I have put the EA burn-in images on pen-drive and running in slideshow, changing every 5 sec. let it run for an hour, then either stop TV or watch channel.

y'day booked TataSkyHD over phone and today will be installation.

I have put price details on this and Price Thread. 42 comes with 1 glass, whereas 50 with 2 glasses; extra glass @ 4900.

Pana KX-MB1500 MFD printer was running in offer (pay 2K extra) from 21Sept12 to 28Sept12. - do check.

Here are my own thoughts:

IR and burn-in issue is overrated and overhyped in my opinion. People should buy an adequate insurance policy that covers untimely death. That does not mean people should buy 20 life insurance policies. Same here.

If you take care of first 100-200 hours then there is no cause of worry. After surmising from my own experience, during the first 200 hours:
  • Reduce the contrast to 35% or less and brightness to 45% or less.
  • Turn on pixel orbiter.
  • Do not watch the same channel for over a long period (4 hours or more).
  • Watching one movie (2 hours) in letterbox mode (black bars on top/bottom) is OK but do not watch in letterbox for extended periods.
  • Break-in slides will help but not necessary. Ditto for running white bar (available in advanced picture settings).

Finally. Ignore the printer offer. It is a useless printer. The cost of ink cartridges will kill you.

Does anyone have a picture of how the sealed box of 50UT50 looks .
Also if some one can confirm if the 2 glasses are shipped from factory inside sealed box ? .

Check my ST50 thread, first post. There are pics out there. The UT50 box will look the same. But you should know that the box its not really sealed. The dealers do open the box.
