Spot the difference! hyeah:
So, Finally my speakers made way to home.
I received the speakers transported via the Sharma Travels bus service from B'Lore and they were in excellent state! Thanks to Bharath (A fellow HIFIVian from whom I bought the speakers) who took utmost care to pack the speakers in Thermocol, newspaper and finally a box inside box :clapping: Kudos to him for the packing.
Though, there were some minor hitches while claiming the courier from the bus service guys as they wanted me to clear the Octroi tax for which I need to go to the Octroi Naka at the outskirts of Pune (Katraj). The guy at the Octroi Naka started re-evaluation of the speaker and asked me to pay Octroi tax of 4% on the estimated value of 10k of the speaker (evaluated by him). Somehow, I pursuaded him to agree that the speakers are for personal use and are old and so the current value will not be more than 2k
But he again started acting up. But finally managed to get the toll clearence by paying Rs 100/-. Ideally they should have given me free pass (but In Ideal world) for personal stuffs but I didn't wanted to waste time in arguing with these guys and wanted to bring these speakers to home as soon as possible.
[Lesson learnt. Never use bus service if you have to avoid unneccesary trips to the Octroi Naka and waste time. Rather use courier. You will be paying a bit more but they will deliver the parcel at your door step.]
After this minor setback I brought the speakers home and connected them to my NAD amp using DAC speaker cable.
The first song played was the song from the movie "Lekin" titled "Suniyo Ji Araj Humari" sung by Lata Ji. The first impression about these speakers is they are really revealing. Lata Ji's voice was so clearly rendered and the tabla and the mridang was sounding just perfect. With this positive first impression, I wanted to experiment with some other music forms and played the track "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits (quite dynamic). The soundstage was very clearly rendered and I specifically liked the highs. Very crisp and clear. On another note, these speakers have the tendency to sound bright if paired improperly with some bright amps but with the NAD they were shining with just the right amount of sunshine (trying to be poetic here, failed miserably
hyeah:.....bear with me).
Another thing which I noticed was that the speaker was very rarely used and was in mint condition and bass was still very tight. Even Bharath had told me that he had used these speakers for just three times to watch three movies (may be he's obsessed with three, as i said bear with me), after listening to these speakers, I had no reasons to doubt him.
Now coming to the bass part, these speakers are not really for the bass heads/freaks. In no way they lack bass but they will not produce earth shaking bass. But for me the bass was just perfect as I usually keep the bass control at 12 O'clock position.
As I mentioned, that these were very rarely used, they needed some serious break in period. To break in these speakers I am feeding them some "Infected Mushroom"(s) and they are very happy eating it without a burp (distortion). The maximum volume I tried till now is 12 O'clock postion and the neighbours are already hunting for me
I hope that the soundstage will improve even further after proper burn in is done.
Now let's talk about the moolah:indifferent14: The total damage (or call it the dent in my wallet
) was 8k including the shipping from B'Lore to Pune. I think it is a fair deal.
So, with the expenditure of about 22k (13k for used amp, 8k for the used speakers, 1k for speaker cable+interconnect), I think I can now say that I have put my baby steps in the HiFi world (So tempted to create a signature now:licklips
.
I know my current system will not even near the threshold level of the audiophile equipments people own in this forum, but I am enjoying the sound. And I so so hope that this satisfaction lasts for some years atleast (or may be some months :sad
.
Cheers!
