Potential Buyers- PlayOn!HD Media Player

Here are some of the findings after r3582 firmware was flashed.

1. Literally the box crashes and reboots every 3 to 5 seconds for any type of file that I try to play.
2. In spite of this, I managed to test all my test files for HD audio (very patiently for 2 hours).
3. DolbyTrueHD, DTS-HD MA and DTS-HD HR are passed through to my AVR and the same lights up briefly on my receiver (for m2ts files). Remember it just lights up and before I could hear any HD sound, the box crashes and loses HDMI connectivity. So still I am yet to hear the HD SOUND.
4. DolbyTrueHD, DTS-HD MA and DTS-HD HR are NOT passed through to my AVR and just only DD and DTS lights up on my receiver (for MKV files)
5. Both audio and video for BD Folders stutters.
6. Rest issues are minor which I dont want to provide in a big list here.

Since the box is totally unusable owing to lots of bugs and crashes, I reverted back to old firmware which has no support for HD audio. Atleast I can watch without interruption and crashes.

Hope AC Ryan should be aware of these issues and provide a stable release with HD audio support at the earliest.

What about other users????????

Sounds strange Guru! I've upgraded to r3582 firmware as soon as I received the box and checking for DOA.

I cant comment on all the points which you've quoted since I dont have my AVR around at the moment.

1. Literally the box crashes and reboots every 3 to 5 seconds for any type of file that I try to play.
5. Both audio and video for BD Folders stutters.

But the above 2 does not happen in my case.

I received my playonHd yesterday.Have not updated the firmware( it came with r4318 installed) ,being aware of the bugs.

Connected it to my stereo amp through analog out and my fullhd tv through HDMI .
Plays every file I've thrown at it with great quality ( iso , m2ts , avi ,wma ,..)
also plays Flac and mp3 .
Since I have not connected a AVR ( and probably will not), so no HD sound issues.

The gui is very basic ,but reasonably user friendly .( Much better than the gui on my DVD usb ,anyway :)) I understand other media players like WD have a much better Gui , but wh I've never owned any ,so...

I'm also not intersted in downloading torrents ( I love utorrent and demonoid too much ...) or streaming stuff wirelessly ( not yet anyway !) , so no issues there... ( also , the only SAMBA I'm familiar with is one involving buxom Brazilian babes !)

By the way , I've not installed internal HD yet. have been using an External HD.

So till now at least , I'm a happy camper. I would have preferred a better way to surf through my ten thousand song collection , but I'm sure I'll figure something out !
( secret of happiness in life : keep expectations low ,either of your loved ones or from media players !) :)

Got my piece picked up through a friend today morning from the mumbai office.
Thanks to vivek and other forum members who have made this group buy possible.

I will be able to check on some of the things mentioned on the thread only once i get back home tonite...

Oh really? I atleast you are happy with the firmware r3582. I dont know why it happens to me. I play mostly big 1080p FHD file with DTS and above only.

Set up my POHD as soon as i got back home. Breezed through all movies i had on my USB HDD. Watched avatar, couldnt just resist it. DOnt have a receiver hence cannot check for HD audio passthrough...

Though things have been smooth, faced a problem while connecting my PC, got the welcome screen on display and the POHD froze, no response from the player. Had to disconnect the USB cable from PC and reset the power. Tried 2/3 times but same issue hence couldnt connect the PC.

Could you guys help me with this pls as i dont know if i am missing some step....

when i connected py pohd to pc, i didnt get any welcome screen. it was just like connecting any usd pendrive. The POHD was listed as g drive and draged and droped the movie file and music files to the root directory of the POHD internal hdd

gui is same like POHD,

Their website is even promising regular firmware updates. There is another version K550i which is a 1080p media player + Bluray Disc Player

Kaiboer Technology co.ltd. - Home

I, personally, have been waiting for a player that combines a Blu Ray player plus a media player in box. Heard Sony BD player and LG BD player addressing it to some extent. But this Kaiboer one hopefully will be a region free player and if they are able to churn out a quality product with support and updates - nothing like it

Kaiboer K580i does have a blu-ray drive but it does not play original bluray discs as they have not licensed the codecs from Sony etc. I believe K550i will have similar limitations. Only brand-name players like Dune Prime etc can do what you are looking for.

Tried connecting my POHD to PC through USH host port but same issue as earlier, welcome screen (frozen) and had to reset the POHD time and again. I dont have any HDD in the POHD, could this be the reason for a frozen welcome screen.... guys would really appreciate help.

I'm sure you meant USB host port. But could you post a screenshot of the "welcome screen". Like Thomasalex pointed out earlier, I too don't get any welcome screen and the PoHD box function just like a USB HDD (I have installed a 750GB Seagate Enterprise SATA HDD inside).

Mate, it is the Blue screen with "Play on HD" logo in the centre of the screen. This screen comes on when you power up the POHD.

Guess will have to wait till i buy 2TB HDD for this player....

any one installed bit torrent download. i have installed it and downloaded one movie. is it ok to leave the pohd switched on 24/7. also if the power supply goes, will it affect the hard disk.

any manual available for bit torrent download and usage.

pls find details to install yamj Wiki Pages - moviejukebox - Project Hosting on Google Code

I am also intersted about it's Torrent capability.

1. Is it comparable to downloading via PC?
2. Can I schedule Torrent Downloads? ( I can only d/l bet'n 0200-0800 Hrs).

Does YAMJ feature on PoHD has the capability to automatically download movie information, posters, fan-art...from internet via IMDB when connected to internet?

Also can PoHD download subtitles from the internet automatically?

It'd really suck if we have to arrange everything on a PC and dump it to PoHD.

I'm spoilt by my HTPC running XBMC and all the eye-candy and usability features it brings. To put it lightly, the PoHD interface looks stone-age in comparison to XBMC so much so that I've watched only one movie so far on PoHD. I guess I will revert back to HTPC itself for the main TV and keep the PoHD for my second TV.
