Hi,
I've bought an sony LCD, klv-22bx300 and a stabilizer from V-Guard, Mini crystal.
But the thing is i've heard people say that Sony LCDs life span is around 1.5 years after than they go kaput and need to replace panels which cost Rs.12K!!!
Is there any more i need to do to save the panels from going kaput.

Thanks,
Ramki

Who said sony panels go kaput after 1.5 years ? that is absolutely false. I have 4 year old Sony 32W400A LCD working perfect..Enjoy your TV..

Oh Thanks Kittu... i'm releaved now. You are the first person who said LCD is works fine after so many years.

Thanks

lcd's do work fine.. i have not heard anything like that and that too sony..

sony's are bit expensive but i guess the reason people prefer is .. reliability..

and why wud any lcd go bad after 1.5 years without any reason...

There are inherent issues with LCDs which can only be resolved by replacement of panels. Usually two kinds on issues are seen:

1. Some component in one of the boards (most often power supply). This can be fixed easily and cheaply.
2. Panel issues (E.g. Blue/Green/Red lines horizontal or vertical)

For issues of later kind, ONLY resolution is to change the panel. To see magnitude of these just try this search : Google

This issue is common to all LCDs, with Sony issue is costly replacement parts. Cost of panel is almost equal to cost of TV.

Don't worry about such things. Lightning can strike anywhere. Just enjoy the product every day while it lasts. People say all sorts of things.....

Trouble is how much does is cost once the lightning has struck...

With CRTs, most such issues could be repaired with local shops in few 100 Rs. Thats why it makes a LOT of sense to buy extended warranty on LCD/Plasma/LED.

The lightning strike can do extensive damage to your pocket, but why mope and moan and fuss waiting for it to happen when it may never happen.....

Thanks guys for the replies. I hope it lasts atleast 5 years!
Yes NetFreak, i enquired for extended warranty(present warranty is 1 year) with Sony customer care, but they said no extended warranty provided for LCD TVs apart from 1 year general warranty!

Hey, it should last for 5 years. According to manufacturer specs, life will be 60,000 hrs or 1,00,000 hrs. That may be a slightly optimistic figure, but it is still WAY higher than the rated life of CRTs.

If company is that comfortable with this claim it should be willing to provide extended warranty as well. Which it does not ;)

My Samsung Bordeaux Art is working absolutely fine for last 4 years with an average usage of min 8 hours a day.So stop worrying and start enjoying some good movies.

How many years warranty does any company provide for CRT?? Does any company provide extended warranty for CRT? Are we to conclude then that CRT is not reliable, owing to the limited warranty?;)

Comprehensive warranty available up to 5 years (for a cost). Call LG customer care for details.

Cost is of 3% of MRP per year. Comparable cost for LCD is 10%. If you buy LCD TV for 50k, extended warranty cost is approx 5k per year.

Thank you for the information (no sarcasm intended). But this warranty upto 5 years seems to be a company specific thing. As is the case with this particular Sony LCD, because there are companies that offer extended warranty on LCDs and plasmas.

With Sony, issue is; it is dependent on Samsung for supplies. It does not produce LCDs anymore.

Sony, Samsung meeting seen focusing on LCD panels | Reuters

All companies that manufacture their own panels (LG/Samsung/Panasonic) have extended warranties. Some provide only for corporate orders (E.g. video walls) others like LG and Panasonic provide it directly to consumers.

Well Sony do produce panels for their tv,its just that the lcd tech is licensed production either from samsung or sharp. Its a joint venture and they poured in millions to billions of dollars in setting up the 8g and 10g facilities.

Samsung uses panels from three other venders in their tvs AUO,CMO,CPT and sharp. So producing their own panels or rather having their own tech isn't the reason for their extended warranty.

Sony india never gave more then 1 year warranty for any of their tvs, including their CRT tvs which is their own tech and produced by them.

However in countries like USA Sony provides optional extended warranty.
