Got hold of test pressings of a couple of classic albums (only 5 test presses of both of them were made).. Never thought I'd ever collect test presses but now that i have them.. It feels quite nice :)

Great. You are lucky to have them. Test pressings are collector's pride and also luckily we get to hear some never released extras in that.

I have got a test pressing of K.B. Sunderambal [late singer/artist in tamil] in 78 RPM and couple more in 78. Most of 78 RPM test pressings were single sided.

Are all white-label LPs, test pressings?

I have about 20 white label LPs (just plain blank white labels) which I sourced from the son of a former General Manager of Polydor Mumbai.

Agree! TPs are really something else to have :)

Most of the propaganda disks specially made by HMV for organisations were white labels too.
This is one propaganda record sung by Usha Timothy (Sanjay Gandhi Nek Purush Tha on both sides of the EP) I had shared sometime back here:-
Sanjay Gandhi Nek Purush Tha - Usha Timothy's Rare Non Film On Her Birthday

Some commemorative disks like this one by Manna Dey composed by Vasant Desai was made by HMV for Maharashtra Government which too was a white label:-
http://www.anmolfankaar.com/special...manna-dey-vasant-desai-lyricist-gandhiji.html

In general most limited edition disks made for occasions were white.

Even test 78s also used to be white. Maybe I will share a scan later.

dear Anil, so 1000 is just an unconfirmed figure as far as Raja is concerned. the above is just fantastic. have never heard about this. may be time for an ep record rip of this at the earliest pl!!!.rgds.visvanathan

The only clue I have about its age is the presence of deep grooves (rings) in the central label area, which formed during pressing.

After 1960 the pressing technology helped to make them without that grooves.

That's an interesting nugget of information.

I also have a handful of ffss records from the late 50s and they all sound good to my ears when played on RIAA phono preamps (I don't have any pre with ffss - or for that matter, any other - de-emphasis).

The Mono Decca LPs of that period had the label 'ffrr' as opposed to the stereo 'ffss'. The RIAA standard was adopted by 1954-55 by most record companies, so only those mono LPs before that time would have the original Decca equalisation curve. Both mono and stereo versions of most titles were issued simultaneously till the mid-60s.

The Classical Decca ffss records of that early period '58 to '60 in the SXL 2000 series (and some of the later SXL 6000 series) are regarded very highly for sound recording quality, and most of these sell for big bucks on eBay, especially first pressings with the 'deep groove' indentation, that was caused by a machine clamp that held down the label area during stamping of the grooves.

Commercial production of stereo LPs started in 1958, I think.

Could this be a '58 pressing ?

Yes, March 1958. In US: The first four HiFi stereo discs available to the general public were released by Audio Fidelity in March, 1958 Johnny Puleo and his Harmonica Gang Volume 1 (AFSD 5830), Railroad - Sounds of a Vanishing Era (AFSD 5843), Lionel - Lionel Hampton and his Orchestra (AFSD 5849) and Marching Along with the Dukes of Dixieland Volume 3 (AFSD 5851)

EMI also released a stereo demonstration record in the same year.

In UK: October 1958 DECCA London introduced their first ffss recording. Starting with their earlier ffrr converted to ffss and then Direct stereo recording.
First one from DECCA:[Direct Stereo]
A JOURNEY INTO STEREO SOUND ...an introduction to ffss Decca Records SERIAL No: SKL 4001. 1958.

This LP's birthday also seems to fall on the birth year of Stereo, 1958..

1.Falls in the LSC 2000 series
2. Very deep inner groove
3.Typical deep-red label of RCA
4. Shaded white doggy -early labels came with this white doggy over a dark shaded back ground
5. It has a 9S stampers seal, which seems to be a sought after one in collector frenzy sites.
6.Stampers code infers it as an Illinois pressings.

What amazed me the most is that this vinyl is pressed with an anti static ingredient called 317X
