Right now I am listening to ...

Good choice. Loved EC's 'From the Cradle' as well.. lately he seems to be better at blues covers than at his own pop-rock stuff.

Robert Johnson is of course the holy grail of blues guitar players; apparently Keith Richards and Brian Jones in the early days of the Stones developed their famous 'interweaving' style by listening and imitating those records. They used to think Johnson had another guitarist playing alongside on rhythm. In time they figured out that he handled both parts on his own, AND sang at the same time. No overdubs!

Eric Clapton - Me and Mr. Johnson. Classic blues. I just love the laid back feel Clapton slips into each song.

Listened last night to 'Bemisaal', a 2 volume round-up of Begum Akhtar's AIR sessions. Fascinating in particular is an interview segment with Qaiser Qalandar, then one of the leading young Urdu poets. Utterly charming - Begum Sahiba holds forth on a variety of subjects; first stage performance, teachers, influences.. and a very tactful response to what she thought of film music! :-)

I also like some tracks on Back Home and Reptile, which otherwise have pop leanings.

Is the Begum Akhtar recording available on CD's? I only have some old cassettes that are in fact losing shape now.

Great Album. Had it in college long ago recorded on cassette tape from an LP borrowed from a friend in Bombay, but the tape simply fell apart as it was bummed so many times.I spent a vinyl weekend listening to some of my old Ventures LPs - "Million dollar weekend ","The Horse " and "Changing Times "

Off topic here, but I was wondering if there is a guide to how you can convert the content of a cassette to a digital file at home. I tried connecting my tape deck's output to my laptop, but the result is just too loud and garbled.

Prabuddhadg: If you mean loud and distorted, then chances are you need to adjust the line-in volume of your sound card, try lowering it a bit. It's a bit of a trial and error till you achieve optimum results - but better too low than too high, you can always increase the volume later through mp3gain or similar software..

Please refer to this thread..

Haven't heard all your rain songs. Quite a list.

BTW, what software do you use to convert to WAV etc? Also, I tried reducing the line in volume to the minimum, but sound is still distorted.

Try Goldwave or Polderbits, both are above average programs with good feature-sets. Not sure if they are free, but there should be a free trial period (15-30 days).

As regards distortion, are you using the REC OUT (RCA) jacks? Those usually give the best output. As an alternative, try the headphone out on the tape deck (if it has one), else from your pre-amp - see if the sound is still distorted. It shouldn't be, with reasonable line in vol settings.

You'll need a different cable for this, minijack on both ends.

PM me if it still doesn't work.

I have used the rca jacks from the tape out into a mini jack into my laptop. The software I used was harddiskogg. Didn't work. Even with the line in volume all the way down the sound gets too distorted.
Let me try tonight, then I shall PM you, Persiflage. Many thanks for offering to help. Sorry for taking this topic off track. Will not, any more.
