Right now I am listening to ...

Country rock, bluesy rock, old school rock... Call it whatever, but if you like the sound of The Eagles, The Byrds, or Gary Moore without the high guitar riffs, then you need to catch Souther's work. Reminds one a lot of The Eagles but not surprising since he wrote songs for The Eagles.

Best Disco dance music ever, debatable but probably. Extremely popular in the 80s and brings back childhood memories for me personally...

Thank you Suhas for referring all of us to Raga Symphony. Extraordinary album, no doubt about it. Kept me awake till 4 last night playing the number repeatedly to enjoy them.

Having listened to Ravi Shankar's rendition of some of the same Ragas using western instruments, I just could not help comparing the two.

In the Raaga Lalith (Raga Mala), Ravi Shankar hits extremely low pitch with the Sitar, and Zubin Mehta uses the violins and trumpets to hit thundering crescendos. After that Ravi Shankar wields magic playing the tune on the Sitar, and Zubin again catches on and ends the number with a thunderous roar.

Pandit Jasraj, on the other hand, keeps the Raaga on an even keel throughout, using the violins to keep up the tempo. He uses the chorus to start the tune, rendered ultimately and beautifully by Ashwin Srinivasan on the flute.

The musical backgrounds of the artists are also clearly discernible. Zubin Mehta/Andre Previn and his team use heavy notes, large number of instruments, and moments of absolute silence effectively to weave a orchestral sound stage. If you expected the team to jump suddenly to a Beethoven or a Mahler from a Hindustani Raaga, you can be pardoned. With Pandit Jasraj, on the other hand,, the violinists and percussionists merge very smoothly into the mood of the Raaga. That they are more in sync with Hindustani music is very clearly visible.

Extraordinary music that you can enjoy for life. A collectors item, no doubt.

Cheers

I believe Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad is good music. Both Landmark and Music World are out of stock. Have ordered for one.

Moser, I again have a sneaky feeling you are up to something fishy. So many fantastic albums, continuously one after the other? Did your uncle leave a CD shop to you? :)

Cheers

Yeah Venkat sir, a good album. Coming to so many CDs, I have always been crazy about music. As a kid used to get pocket money of Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 and audio cassettes would cost Rs. 25 to Rs. 35, which meant I would buy at least 5-6 albums every single month. The same has continued now that I am an adult and earning, but graduated to CD, DVDs, etc.

3 CD collection, amazing guitar riffs and vocals, lots of ballads and blues. Do check him out, at least the Greatest Hits/Best Of selection.

As part of ripping all my CDs, I came across an old album that I had not heard for quite some time. Carpenters - Their Greatest Hits. Listened to it twice just today and marveled at the way Richard Carpenter has used just a few instruments to create superb music. Of course without the sweet voice of Karen Carpenter all this would have been wasted. But Richard intimately understood the voice of Karen and always reduced the music when she sang using the guitars, violins, piano and other instruments to keep a gentle rhythm at the back. Coming at a time when the Beatles, David Bowie, Santana, Simon & Garfunkel were ruling the world with their rock, The Carpenters diverted the ears of millions back to pop music. Not a small achievement by any standards.

Can any one forget 'Top Of The World.' How many times I have chosen that song to bray when someone forces me to sing in a party !! My god, they sang some really good and melodious songs.

And what lyrics !! Here are some examples of the lyrics they had used in some of their songs.

What lies in the future is a mystery to us all
No one can predict the wheel of fortune as it falls
There may come a time when I will see that I've been wrong
But for now this is my song.
And it's goodbye to love
I'll say goodbye to love.

When they get to the part
Where he's breakin' her heart
It can really make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more.

Loneliness, is such a sad affair
And I can hardly wait to be with you again
What to say to make you come again
Come back to me again
And play your sad guitar

Something in the wind has learned my name
And it's tellin' me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me.
There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here.
I'm on the top of the world lookin'

Cheers

Debatable, but IMHO the best Hindi film music of 2008... Very unlike Hindi film music, lots of variety, Farhan Akhtar is a revelation.
