Right now I am listening to ...

Angry, gangster rap, directed at the system, the cops and I guess all whites in general. Still will get you grooving and your feet tapping...

Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds...

A great track and my introduction to Youssou N'Dour. Now I have a couple of albums from him. Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance from the album Raw Like Sushi was my introduction to her and that's a great album too.

Listening to Piece By Piece by Katie Meluah. Amazing voice. She seems to sing with an urgency and a desperation that her lover should understand how much she loves him.

The first four tracks - Shy Boy, Nine Million Bicycles, Piece By Piece and Halfway Up The Hindu Kush are real good numbers.

I must thank Sharath of Audire who introduced me to Katie Meluah. I cajoled my son to get me an original, and he went and harassed Virgin Superstore in Dubai till they gave him one.

Cheers

Was literally thrust on me especially with the information the "most influential rock album". Amazing and not to be missed.

Have this lying somewhere, now that Venkaji has reminded me I've to locate and rip it. Guys, you have to listen to her. Amazing vocals as Venkatji has pointed out. In fact this collection/compilation is a great place to start off with.

From Here to Eternity from Giorgio Moroder [1977]
is a Eurodisco complete with vocoder effects. This album is a masterpiece with continuous mix of
banging, metallic beats with high-energy impact.

Hi Anil,

Even I listened to this Giorgio LP last week. I happened to notice this old record lying around unused at my father/brother's house ,so I got it home and gave it a spin. Though its not really my kind of music, it wasn't bad.

Thanks,
Sharad

The ghazal selection is good. These are really great Ghazals. Possibly the best record ever by Runa Laila, and one of the best ghazal albums otherwise. Second only to Mehdi Hasan. The rendering is classic and sincere. The music by Pandit Ghulam Kadir is excellent and controlled. If you like Mehdi Hasan you would love these too. Most of these recordings were never released on CD or cassette. So hunt for the LP.

1. Aaye Kuch Abr
2. Ranjish Hi Sahi
3. Gulon Mein Rang
4. Uzr Aane Mein Bhi
5. Doob Gayi Sab Yaaden
6. Baat Karni Kabhi
7. Tum Aaye Ho Na
8. Garche Sao Bar
9. Raat Jab Chand Se
10. Kabhi Kaha Na Kisi
11. Aziz Itna Hi Rakho
12. Bina Gulab Ko
13. Khayal-O-Khawab

I always feel bad about the fact that she never attempted ghazals again. A huge talent went unexploited.

Regards,
Sharad

Sharad,

Have you heard Ghulam Ali? Pretty good stuff from him too, my mom loves ghazals so I have enough listening experience especially in the car. Another of her favorites is Pankaj Udhas. I'm more into sufi in this genre though.

Have this LP and it's simply outstanding. I did see a compilation album of Runa Laila's on cassette which had some of the ghazals on here, along with some of her 'light' Hindi/ Bangla numbers (remember she was quite a rage in India for a couple of years) - but this again was 5-7 years ago. The label was Concord (Calcutta) if I'm not mistaken.

Along with parallel cinema, there was a 'new ghazal' movement in India in the mid to late 70s, at the forefront of which were Jagjit/Chitra of course, but it also threw up quite a few other excellent ghazal artistes.. people like Anwar, Dilraj Kaur, Chhaya Ganguli, Hariharan. Most had to reinvent themselves as playback singers with varying degrees of success.

Yes moserw, I do have a lot of CDs by Ghulam Ali. He is a great light classical singer, who has also sung many good ghazals too.

I listen to a lot of ghazals. I would personally list the singers in the following order of preference:

  • Begum Akhtar
  • Mehdi Hasan
  • Iqbal Bano
  • Ghulam Ali
  • Habib Wali Muhammad
  • Noor Jahaan
  • Farida Khannum
  • Jagjit Singh
  • ...

Yes, Runa Laila does not appear on the above list, as she was a one album wonder as far as ghazals are concerned. Even though that album remains a classic. I also like the LP record for the movie Umrao Jaan Ada, which had Runa Laila signing most of the songs. It also has the original version of the Noor Jahaan classic "Aakhiri Geet Sunaane Ke Liye Aaye Hain, Jo Bacha Tha Woh Lutane Ke Liye Aaye Hain". This nazam took a different flavour, when Noor Jahaan sang this on stage in India in 1982, apparently without a legal permission by her country to perform here.

Sharad

Thanks. Will try to get come CDs from these artists for my mom. Her birthday is in April so great timing...

Hi

I do not understand Urdu and hence miss out on the beauty of this genre. However I do listen to them when I get a chance.

Is there a reason you left out Pankaj Udhas, Mohd. Rafi, Talat Aziz, & Rahat Ali Khan?
