Right now I am listening to ...

Afj:

Can you recommend some really good African music - something with rhythm and using instruments that are popular in Africa? I don't even know if there are any popular singers in that area?

Cheers.

Ali Farka Toure, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela and Youssou N'Dour come to mind. LBM featured strongly on Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints album.

Did you mean the Graceland album?

Rhythm of the Saints (which I love equally) is his Latin America-influenced album..

You're right. Ladysmith feature on only a song or so in Rhythm of the Saints but dominate the Graceland album. I prefer the former by a wide margin though -- Graceland was a bit all over the place in terms of musical styles.

While not a multi-instrument or vocal based music, Babtunde Olatunji's music is fantastic, especially if you're into percussion. I use them to test the LF of any system. This and this are pretty good especially.

Also, if you are looking for contemporary/fusion African music, the Putumayo series is pretty good. I loved the few albums I had a chance to listen to.

Wow! A classic, indeed!

Yeah. Initially, I picked this up because Syd Barrett gave the Pink Floyd name after reading the names of Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. So I wanted to hear what they sounded like. This music is very addictive. Floyd doesn't have any albums of his own, but I have some mp3s that I found. He is featured in a number of Blind Boy Fuller albums.

Was going to ask you if you have listened to Council, as I was not able find his music. But yeah, Pink is tops and addictive as hell.
