sam9s HTPC Project! powered by XBMC!!

I have paid advance for Zotac Nano AD10. Its costing me about 17K with 4GB RAM and no HDD. The dealer will be delivering on Monday or Tuesday. I have one question. I have 1 TB external hard drive. Can I use that with Zotac Nano to install OS and drivers in the machine? Ans also for media viewing. I'm planning to install internal HDD once the HDD price goes down a little.
I worked out the total cost with the dealer for assembling good HTPC. Its costing more than 25K with present market hardware rates. Therefore I settled for Zotac Nano AD10. Hope I made somewhat wise decision.

Hello friends welcome to Sam's HTPC thread....

Well after 2 weeks of research and development and another week to successfully deploy it, finally completed building MY HTPC,

Following is my story and complete built

To begin with one might ask with Media players all over the place giving an out of the box experience and I; already owning one, what was the need to go for an HTPC??

Well following are the 3 main reason for the same .... ofcourse there were many other small factors as well, but the following remains the main.

1. My POHD does not support HD audio and I was not willing to spent another 10-12K to get a new Media Player just for this drawback (reason in the 3rd point)

2. YAMJ, every single media player I have seen (except TViX maybe) has a pathetic YAMJ, along with a crap interface ..... yes even extremer or new POHD2, all lack a polish quality media interface and yes, much needed elite YAMJ

3. Last but not the least, since I upgraded my PC and assembled a new one, I had my old hardware at hand, so decided to use it as my HTPC. All I added was a case and a mid level GPU

(details discussed later in the post.)

Now I had a very specific objective for the my HTPC, as to how it needs to be configured and how it should behave, which was very much in the lines of an actual media player. Few of the points that I had in mind for my HTPC ....

1. It should definitely have the feel of a media player, no windows feel at all, should boot directly in to my Media Center. Though the base would ofcourse be windows (one can opt for linux as well) but I opted to go
for windows .....

2. Boot time as fast as possible (just like media player), will upgraded to SSD later.

3. Quality YAMJ and polished look and feel...... with the entire interface drooling with quality. (This was one of my main reason to ditch media player along with HD audio support)

4. Support for HD audio. (DTA MA and DD THD streaming)

5. Remote for HTPC just like a conventional Media Player

Now that we have a small introduction before moving further I would like to show you the final product, so that you may have an idea what lies ahead.

For the Media Player I decided to choose the awesome front end media center from Xbox called XBMC or Xbox Media Center. There are loads of other media center applications as well like for example "Windows Media Center", "Media Portal", "Media Browser" etc etc and
every media center has its own pros and cones, but XBMC with its cones was the most polished looking media center with max number of TPA plugins and themes .....

Following is the video that shows the complete bootup of the HTPC in to XBMC and explorers the few main functions of the same.

If the end product is liked and there is enough interest in the thread, I will share more details as to how I configured XBMC to behave like how I wanted to.
The video is in two parts since youtube does not allow to load a video which is more then 15 minutes. Plus the quality is bit poor, I recoded the video in 720p but the entire size landed to be pretty huge, around 5GB, so I had to compress it and lessen the resolution to 640x480 to get it under 500MB .....so bare with me on the quality of the video. But it would given you a fair bit of an idea as to how XBMC looks and feel.

To begin with the hardware .....

Remember HTPC is not big deal, you dont need a powerhouse of a hardware to actually get the max out of your HTPC, not even 3D, with my current config I could have used it as my 3DvHTPC as well if I had the 3D display .....

The config (remember its the old hardware I used.)

1. Intel C2D [email protected] Ghz
2. ASUS P5B Delux mobo
3. 4GB DDR2 RAM
5. nVidia Zotac GT440 GPU (This is New)
6. Silverstone LC10-E HTPC cabinet (This is new as well)

Point to not is that I chose to go nVidia way this time for multimedia needs. If you do some research you will come to know that though ATI leads the GPU segment with their HD series, but when it comes to A/V playback capabilities nVidia is said to be better. Specially with CORE AVC codecs used with their popular CUDA technology. Plus there are some rare bugs with video playbacks with ATI that pushed me to go for nVidia for my HTPC. GT4XX series is the best known for A/V playback with full support for HD Bitstreaming and 3D playback.

For case ... well Silverstone LC-10 was the cheapest HTPC case from Silverstone, and I did not want to go for any conventional case. Though there was few from Thermalake that I really liked.

Apart from it I used ....

1. Logitech wifi keyboard combo
2. ANDROID XBMC remote
3. ANDROID TMT5 remote

The applications used ...

1. Xbox Media center XBMC
2. Total Media Theater 5

One can use Power DVD or MPC-HC (with ffdshow)as well

3. Media Center Master

Following are the pictures of my hardware and XBMC. The skin I have used in the below snaps are "Transperancy!" and "MediaStream Redux". Have shared loads of snaps so bare with me ...

Suggestions, Questions are welcome ......

Hi, I would like to first congratulate you for setting up a really remarkable HTPC with all the bells and whistles possible. I really like what you have done to enable HD audio. I have a similiar setup on my imac running plex which is a lot like XMBC. I am happy to get 1080/24p video on my HTPC. My only issue is HD audio. I am unable to find any media player for apple that supports HD audio. What do you suggest?

Time to update ....... Added yet another feature ...... (tell you the truth, I added this feature months ago, but completely forgot to share, thanks to "Switch" post that made me remember this feature as he has his titles all in one single library.) .....

Thanks for the video. Where do you get 720p hindi movies for downloading?

can you share the components with which your dealer quoted 25K for the HTPC. Is that including display. If it is not then its definitely on the higher side.

Nano is a good purchase, I am sure, though its still on the higher side but, its compactness, quality and polishness would justify the cost. About HDD, I think nano takes 2.5" HDD (notebook one) and not the regular 3.5 one.

And yes you can use the HDD connected to USB to install OS and drivers, you have to set the machine to boot from USB from BIOS. But I will suggest against it. First its USB 2.0 and not 3, so running the entire OS is definitely gonna slow down the performance drastically. You dont want to start your media player and wait for ages for it to reach the XBMC home screen .....do you!! :-). If HDD prices are high, better get a small capacity HDD like 500GB or may even 320 GB. Install OS, XBMC and all drivers and then use is to play movies off the external HDD, connected to USB. Thats how it should be .....

and congrats again for the new HTPC purchase. ..... :-)

mmmm apologies, no idea AFA iMac goes ..... maybe someone with the same hardware can respond....

Thanks for the video. Where do you get 720p hindi movies for downloading?

All off the net, direct download sites like Rapidshare, Fileserve ....etc .

^^ Better refrain posing direct links for Download sites etc ... do via PM if you want to .... :-)

No the dealer quoted 25K and more without the display. I asked him to assemble the hardware I got from the forum, mostly suggested by you. I checked prices at Chandni, kolkata where one can get anything related with computer hardware.
Yeah I think I will get HDD installed in the system but 320 GB HDD is costing about 3.5K.
anyways, thanks I will let you know after I receive the stuff and install XBMC.

^^ Fair enough .... HDD is expensive, I guess coz its 2.5" HDD and not the regular one ...
Anyway get it installed and take it from there ....

I have a query regarding building an HTPC for my Denon 1912. I have an old PC which I would like to covert as HTPC. The motherboard and Chipset details are as given below.

Motherboard : Intel G945 GCCR
Processor : Intel Core2 Duo Processor E4300
Chipset : Intel i945G
Current RAM: 1 GB DDR2
HDD : 320 GB

This motherboard does not have the onboard SPDIF out. So, I am not sure whether I would need both soundcard and graphics card for converting it to HTPC.

My doubts are:

Which GPU to purchase and approximate cost.
Which PSU to buy to support the GPU and cost.
What would be the ideal RAM and approximate cost for the same.

Please note that I am not a gamer so this would be used only for playing media files.

My budget would be around 10K.

thanks in advance.

I think you just require a gpu preferably gt430/440. Just connect the hdmi out of this gpu to your denon and you are good to go both for movies and music. Get xbmc software as your frontend movie jukebox and enjoy the visual appeal similar to a media player.

Thanks.

Get additional 2GB Ram (costs around 1.2k for ddr2).
Then buy Nvidia GT 430 (around 3.5-4k) if only for media
Buy Nvidia GTX 550Ti (costs around 8.5k) or GTS450 (costs around 6.5k) if you want to game( you have said no gaming but in case you wanna game buy one of these)

The gpu itself has hdmi 1.4 output which will carry sound output also(there will be a tunnel in the pci express port which will carry the sound to the gpu and will output through hdmi).

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I think can go ahead with GT 4xx series. So, I don't have to upgrade PSU as well?

As manniraj suggested correctly (he seems to be learning fast ..:D), your hardware is almost complete. Get a GPU .... GT430/440/450 ..... configure win 7 to output 7.1 audio via GPU, (its been discuessed in this same thread),
install XBMC and you are good to go.

For PSU, the lowest I would suggest is the CM 400 W Elite Power

RAM 1GB would work fine ... however since ram prices are very low, you can opt to upgrade to 1GB more. Total cost should be .

1. GPU : 4000 MAX (could be 5,700 less)
2. PSU : 3000 Max
3. RAM : 500-600
TOTAL.. : 7500-7800.
At the max .... rest amount you can use to get few accessories...

Once you have all this installed we can go ahead and configure winows 7 and XBMC ...:-)

Yeah yes sam learning fast because of this forum :D. Also going thru the htpc built I realised that for just playing media files a basic minimum hardware is the best solution less heat and less noise and more control on the system.

Thanks.

Thanks.

That depends, if you want to play 3D blurays or any SBS 3D file with high bit-rates then you will need a pretty good gpu and atleast 2GB RAM. Basic hardware will not work for 3D blurays with 7.1 ch output.

The gt430/440 is pretty good for high bit-rate blu-ray movies. I never tried 3D blurays but I think this gpu is more than sufficient to play them. I have a amd athlon x2 processor. Infact I have installed madvr and went with the lavcuvid processor software enabled thru potplayer and mpc-hc and my gpu (gt440) does it comfortably with the cpu load being less than 45% for a 1080p 30gb file. The video just looks awesome on my 720p sony bravia.

Nope, GT440 plays 3D BD ISO absolutely fine, have tried it personally, its gem of a sweet spot card for a complete HTPC.
..... with any dual core processor, the load will not go beyond 30% for CPU. (while playing 3D ISO) Add to it....... any 2GB ram even DDR2, and you got yourself a decent HTPC.

Sam,

I have a collection of Video Songs and Movies in good number. All the media center software, detect these under single category "video". Is there any way to manage this as two different categories.

Do you have Video Songs and Movies in HDD, if so how do you manage in XBMC.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
