Samsung 64F8500 Plasma Discussion Thread

Yes, one can buy an extended warranty before the first year manufacturer's warranty expires. We have to call the warranty support team of Samsung who will in turn routes their service center to the service center.

Cheers, Ravi

Thats very good, any idea whats the cost and coverage years ( i assume 2 more yrs0

Ravi: Thanks for the info. When you say 3 years, is it 1 yr regular warranty + 3 years additional or 1 yr regular warranty + 2 years additional?

Guys: I am on the verge of giving a go ahead to a close friend on this model. The only concern I have is the availability of spares. My friend is investing in this for long time. He is jumping from CRT to this, so you can understand his upgrade frequency, when he does, he does the best.

I am hearing some very disturbing stories about 3 yr old top of line plasma going kaput and Samsung saying they cannot repair due to non-availability of spares. 2 lakhs is a lot of money to drain in 3 years. I thought for top of the line they would have service looks like its not the case!!!

Anyone did some homework on this or any experience?

Ram, availability of spares will always be a question in case with plasma. Warranty is 1 + 2 years. Check whether Samsung gives 2 years extended warranty on full TV or just the panel. Panasonic gives for panel only.

Ram, the story is of my Plasma 58C6500, purchased on Oct 2010 for 1.6 lakhs, couple of months back the usb and lan ports stopped working, so basically all smart features died. I logged a call with Samsung the engineer came down and said problem was with the main-board and the entire part needs to be changed. Cost including repairs was coming under 7.5k. I gave the go ahead, post one week they came back stating the part was not available and offered buy back as an option. My tv was out of warranty as it was nearing 3 years. I did escalate to Samsung higher ups made lot of noise, they tried to source the part globally but their was no success. Post which they offered a buy bak for the OOW set. The policy they have is that is the TV is under 5 years they can buy back. Beyond 5 years they are not liable to have parts available. So they bought back my TV at 33% depreciation.

I do not know what would be the process for a extended warranty set in the same situation, so that is something i am trying to figure out. As i have also paid for a 64F8500 and awaiting delivery for nearly 3 weeks now. Basically it would be good to find out what you get by spending that extra 13k. Will they replace the set, or will there be a difference in the buyback amount.

Usually post 1 year is 16% depreciation, post 2 year is 33% and post 3 year is 49% depreciation.
Some of the folks on the forum have bought the extended warranty for the 51F5500, dunno whether any one using the 64" have gone for the same.

Hope the above helps. If you are able to gather some info as to what the process is under extended warranty it would be great as they are offering 1+3 as of now.

It's for three years extended warranty (1 yr manufacturer warranty plus 3 yes). When I spoke to Samsung warranty support team last month they gave me the below prices:
1 yr- 5000 INR, 2 yrs- 8400 INR, 3 yrs- 12600 INR plus taxes. The warranty covers - Panel, main PCB boars, SMPS board and their sub assemblies.

I'll talk to them this week to check on the other points you have mentioned. If there are no spares available during the extended warranty period there is no point buying it unless there id an increase in the buy back amount !

Cheers, Ravi

Thanks Dushie for the details. I have a friend in similar boat, will ask him to contact Samsung

Ravi: Do check. Also, like Dushie mentioned check on the buy back post warranty period. So at least we know for 5 yrs there is some backup.

One question to you guys: What made you decide on this TV and why not a 3D projector like Epson?

Ram i already have HD20 from last 3 years and i am happy with the same. Problem was my room size which is huge, due to the same reason i got the 58" plasma in 2010 and was happy with the same. But due to part issue as it went in buy back the next best size was 64" as i did not want to go lower. I did give a thought for the S60 which would have costed 50k cheaper than this, but it could not match the PQ and features of the 8500. Also Panasonic shutting down plasma sales in India has not helped the cause much.

Post negotiation i got a good price for the 64F8500 so went for the same. Now have to sell the Samsung soundbar off to recover some money as i wont be using the same.

Repost: Latest update :

Well things get interesting. I went on the samsung website and complained to the CEO office. Got an email that they are unable to reach me a while back. Called back spoke to a lady named Shweta from customer experience program and she asked for the dealer details and i narrated my story to her. She asked me to wait for a while as she would talk to the dealer and would call back. Got a call within 10 minutes, she said that she had spoken to the dealer and the sales office, i would be getting a TV by Monday evening. If not she asked to give her a call on Tuesday morning.

Let's see what happens now, i blasted her saying i spent 2 lakhs on a TV and dealer is saying Samsung is not giving stock, what the hell is happening here.

Keeping my fingers crossed, let's see what happens and how many more follow ups it would take.

Here we go again: Woke up early in the morning called the dealer, got standard response no tv, no stock, nothing is coming for the next couple of weeks. This ticked me off, went and dropped a note on Samsung india Facebook page and then started to dig on google and forums. Finally dropped an email to Samsung higher ups and it got escalated to MD's office. They did a conference call with dealer and me and i pushed them hard. Finally i would get the TV by Thursday. Also they would be extending the warranty by 1 month as i bought it on 9th Nov.

Hopefully the TV should come in by Thursday , then will place a call for installation and take it forward.

Thats good to know. It gets more interesting. My friends son presented him with a 40 inch TV today. So now, he is stuck whether to retain the 42 and buy a 3D PJ or move 42 to bedroom and buy the Sammy.

This is his requirements, please provide your thoughts:
1. 90% HD content and 10% SD content
2. Loves watching 3D and is a avid movie goer. But due to his age he is unable to go that much now to theatres.
3. Picture quality is very very important for him

( For only watching HD stuff the TV is awesome )

(3D is active on the TV and you get 4 glasses along with it, i have not seen 3D much but from reviews this does a good job)

3. Picture quality is very very important for him[/QUOTE]
(PQ is excellent its a very bright TV and can be viewed in rooms where you do not have light control.)

Please check the room specification and viewing distance of your friends room. As that would be important. The only other TV which can give an equivalent PQ in dark rooms would be the Panny ST series which is nowhere in stock currently and difficult to get hands on.

Also it would be good if you can share, whats the 40" tv he got .
For using PJ again its a good idea, but you would need to look at the room specifications and viewing distance. Also the one problem all PJ users face is the bulb life. You can't use PJ for watching TV as lamp life comes into picture. I think my HD 20 has crossed 300 hours or so that is when i only use it for movies.

Hope it helps.

Dushie:His living room is L shaped and viewing distance will be around 10-12 feet. If he gets the PJ, it will be used only for movies where the Pana 40 inch LCD will be used for regular TV watching.

Given that wont a PJ give a better experience than the TV? Also, is 3D effective in PJ than TV? I dont have much experience with PJs, so worried I would give a wrong recommendation, hence the barrage of questions

Hi All,

After months of research I purchased the 64 inches plasma yesterday. I got a great deal, 1.70 L including the sound bar. I have not opted for the sound bar and I got a further discount of 8K, so I ended up paying 1.62 L, the TV will be delivered today. If any one is genuinely interested buying the TV in Hyderabad please get in touch with me and I'll share the contact details of the person who got me this deal.

I would request the owners in this forum to confirm if the usage hours code works (Mute, 7, 3, 7, OK) and of any of you have checked it on your TV!

I have decided to buy a 3 years extended warranty once the TV is installed.

I still have the option of picking up the sound bar by paying 8K. Please advise if it is worth spending.

I also got a 51F5500 for a friend of mine for 65K including the free blue ray player. I think he also got it for a steal !

Thanks to all the members in this forum for their inputs/ feedback on the TV, your inputs have greatly helped me in taking a decision.

Regards.

Hey Ravi, Ram is interested in picking this up for a friend, it would be good if you can drop him a message with the dealer details and stuff.

10 to 12 feet would be ideal for a 64" TV. For projector i have not seen any 3d content on PJ, probably someone owning a 3D projector maybe able to give good insight on the same. I have not read much about 3d projectors PQ and performance as i was not a fan of 3D.

Yes the combination does make sense, as he got a 40" TV already he can get a 3D PJ and it would suffice. Is the TV also 3d?

My living room is 16 feet wide and I watch from 12-14 feet. HD content is good for 10 feet and since he watches mostly HD, he can blindly go for it.

64 inch plasma is big enough for 3D viewing from 10 feet, infact it would very immersive experience. I watched Avatar and Hugo from 6- 7 feet distance and it was amazing, 3D on this set is excellent. No strain on eyes at all (the set is active 3D !)

I am not sure if a projector is good enough for a 10 feet viewing distance ! I feel that a 64 inch screen is big enough for that distance.

Cheers, Ravi

Spoke to the dealer and replied to his message :)

Price has gone up by 10000 INR.

Cheers, Ravi
