Samsung UA40D5000 LED TV

Hi All,

Any Idea, How are th new Sony Ex 720, 520 series of Television. Are they better then Samsung D series?? My friend wants to buy a 32 inch LED. I told him samsung D-series is good. Just want to confirm, which TV is better for a 32 inch LED?

Thanks,
Sajjad.

Sony EX520/720 is also an equally good set; However you can recommend the 32" 5 series Samsung LED (either C or D series, depending upon availability) to him and he will be fully if not better satisfied... 520 series has additional Internet and skype facility and is also edge led, same as this samsung... however panel sharpness I found a touch better in the samsung...

It doesn't only depend on the panel. The video processor/chip/engine and the picture setting also plays a big part. I find Panasonic and Sony better overall.

thats what I am saying that panel alone plays only part of the role and other things matter too... Panasonic has dominance in the Plasma market only and its lcd/led quality doesnt match the other two; Sony is equally good as Samsung in LCD, though in LED technology, samsung has a clear lead...

Also just for general information to gauge the technological prowness of Samsung -

Sony EX520 is good but EX720 is much better. Sony is one of the best in motion processing and i will suggest him Sony EX720. If he wants samsung then he should go for d6000. Even panasonic is equally good but they are yet to be launched. Check panasonic DT30 and E3 model. Hope this helps. Tc.

These days in various Tech forum displaying TV products, Samsung & LG are going neck to neck in displaying the technology.
When I watched samsung, sony side by side, I found samsung is better in HD, and Sony is better in SD. I guess they are using some success formulas from their CRT technology in reproducing good pictures even out of bad content (SD). Again, my personal opinion based on demos.

This is all good but according to a survey by harris poll Sony is still no.1 in consumer electronics. Sony and Panasonic have a more natural picture than samsung and lg thats what i feel. To each is own i guess. Lot of sites rate Panasonic and Sony as the best so its quite debatable but I dont want to start any debate over which is better :)

Samsung is the market leader,it was always cheaper to buy then Sony.
They were the first to come up with the name LED for a edge-led lit lcd.People thought it was something new. When infact led backlight tvs were old infact the first so called backlight LED tv was launched by sony in 2004 ,they still called it lcd.

But this year not all the models of samsung are cheap they are infact many models are more expensive then Sony including there flagship model.

As far as performance goes for most years the top honors went to Sony.
You have the XBR4/X350 vs samsung F96 year 2007
You have the XBR8/X450 vs samsung series A9xx of 2008
You have the XBR8/X450 vs Samsung B8500 of 2009(honors went to samsung).
You have the HX900/909 vs samsung series 9 and series 8 of 2010

And this year you have the HX925/9 a full array local dimming led-lcd with highly revamped image processing vs the edge-led local dimming D8000.

I never said Samsung is bad and i never said Sony or Panasonic is no.1 in sales. I read a lot about cars and electronics. I do respect Samsung and Lg and i have nothing against them. Its just i prefer Panasonic and Sony. Sony's tv are always more expensive than samsung and lg. But last year they reduced their price to be more competitive and they did well. Price, panel supply and marketing also plays a big role. People pay more importance to price than brand in tvs. Samsung and Lg is very aggressive in marketing. They dont have shortage of panels. They have good designs and they are very good also but i like the understated looks of Panasonic and Sony. So my point is if Samsung is no.1 in sales it doesn't mean they are the best or they cant be beaten in sales by other companies. Competition is good for us. It makes every company give their best. Last year Sony & Panasonic was the most awarded brand in Tvs and Blurays in Whathifi magazine.

Well said. Samsung was even banned from showing the commercial after a case was filed. Sony was the 1st one to come up with led tvs. People till now ask me whether Samsung's 5 series is full led or edge led and when i tell them Samsung doesn't make full led tvs they are shocked because the salesperson told them Samsung is full led whereas Sony is edge led. I am waiting for the Sony's HX920 and Panasonic's VT30 model. Please lets not fight now. To each his own. In the end we the customer should win. :)

I guess Sony's market share would further increase in coming years, if Internet TV becomes popular. They have lot of their own Music & Movie content.

Well, worldwide, Sony's marketshare is about half of that of Samsung. Its only here in India that we have a Sony fixation...

dkaile,

1. Don't get carried away with paid advertisement based news.

2. Your data does not show what you mention. The data talks about growth percentage as well as market share. This shows Sony is the fastest growing brand in year on year or on quarter on quarter. 34% against 2% for Samsung; 54% for Sony against 27% for Samsung. This means that Samsung's days are over. Sony is growing at TWICE faster than Samsung.

3. This report also says that in North America (biggest market) Samsung is not the leader. Hence, there is no problem if India prefers "SONY". It is not a fixation as you condemnly put it.

4. In future, I request your kind reading any news fully before cutting and pasting it.

5. Thanks very much for sharing this data.

Hi

1.True

2.Sony has become more competitive and aggressive than before. Sony means business now.

3.Yes indians do prefer Sony and i dont see anything wrong in it.

4.True

5.Same here.

In the end we the customer should win always.

@hifijay @aks
To each his own... Sony and Samsung are both here to stay; and that Samsung is the market leader worldwide for which you have no rebuttal and your presumption that
Samsung's days are over
is grossly wrong.... Kindly take care not to repeat such mistakes in the future...

i also agree that in the end it is us, the consumer, who should benefit and not any brand in particular; more the competition, more the merrier...

Dkaile,

Please read full sentence. Please do not cut and paste and reply for part of the sentence.

I was only interpreting the statistics provided by yourself. I explained what that data says without putting any of my opinion. It shows Sony is growing faster than Samsung for the past one year. And, in the biggest market Samsung has lost market share.

If you need to be angry about this, You need to blame the statistics and also yourself who posted this data.

Thanks

lolz man... chilll...

no need to blame anybody... sony may have grown in a quarter but that happens; but the fact remians that in the last 1 year Samsung has taken its market share over 20% is an achievement in itself which has never happened before, and never with sony...

If you like Sony, go for it... its a good brand; if someone likes Samsung, let him go for that... now enough diversions, lets keep the topic about the samsung led only and we will discuss the shares elsewhere... I had just suggested the technological prowness of Samsung; sorry to see that the topic took a wrong turn...

Wow guys, thats some conversation. So back to the Topic. I have been a Sony fan (Have a V series 32 LCD). But the new models Ex520 and Ex720 (especially 520), I'm not much impressed with PQ. I think last year model, 710, 500, 400 are much better. Am I right?
For 32 inch LED, going for Ex720 3D model I'm not very sure (even price wise). SO thats why I asked for your suggestions. The D-series is good but Sony Ex520 series, is it good enough??? Are there any LG/Panasonic models available in 32 inches, which are good....

The last year models where certainly good, but this year models are the same, if not better.
The EX710 some of the sizes are good like the 40" but the 32" and 46" has a AMVA panel.
The EX720 has a SPVA panel as does the EX520.
I was looking the samsung D5000/5500 series so far after looking at 4 showrooms i could only spot a AA01 panel which is a AMVA panel.
So which suggests that the current lot of D5000/5500 series assembled in india has a AA panel.
