Showcase Your Turntable

Hi Sachin,
How much for the OM10? Is it the Super OM 10 or plain OM 10? I have been eyeing the Super OM30 or OM40 but they are pricey. I thought it is better off to invest in a Denon DL 103R.

BTW, I ordered the stylus for my Shure V15 Type III from Ed Saunders. Much cheaper than the Jico but apparently better per some reports. Made exactly as per OEM specs with diamonds from Switzerland. Performance meets, or nearly, meets the OEM specs on most parameters. I also asked him about Super OM cart and he promised to get back.

Hi Joshua,
Its Super OM-10,priced @69 at needledoctor Ortofon OM 10 Super Phono Cartridge
Ed Saunders cartridges and styli are well praised, very good VFM.Ed Saunders make very good quality stylus,at reasonable price, great customer service.
BTW Did you see the new look of Ed Saunders The New Look of Edward Saunders ;)

Regards,
Sachin

Nope, it's hemp cone base.

I really wouldn't be able to do a direct comparison as I don't have the ZYX in house any more. From memory, the Accurate just had more of everything in my setup.

Interesting, I have to look around for a Clearaudio Accurate cart for audition.

BTW, since you have a top of the line VPI kit, what is your thought about the current hot favourite the VPI classic (1,2 and 3) ? It will be very interesting to know because the classic is relatively cheaper but still many say it is the best VPI TT.

You will have a very hard time auditioning the Clearaudio Accurate because it has been long out of production. You will have to listen to the Clearaudio Goldfinger that is in the current market and in production.

I keep up to date on the VPI front and the developments. I actually was JUST talking to Mike at VPI the other day (sometime last week) about these very things.

See, I auditioned a VPI Classic in my system and was super impressed with it. It had good PRaT and sounded very open. What I noticed that it didn't have the huge bass quality and gigantic soundstage that the VPI TNT 6 has. In fact, if I had not already had the TNT, I would have probably gotten a Classic 3 which was the subject of my discussion with Mike at VPI.

I asked him point blank if the Classic 3 is something I should get to REPLACE the TNT 6 and he said absolutely not. The current economics of building the TNT would just NOT work in the current market which is why they came up with a good all in one design as in the Classic 3.

In fact, the HRX was also developed back in the day because the TNT 6 was getting too expensive due to rise in raw material cost (increasing prices of quality acrylic and rising prices of oil which is used for acrylic). They came up with the HRX with the acrylic, aluminum, acrylic plinth to keep costs low. In fact, he said, if they had to develop the current HRX motor in todays market, they could NOT price it below $3000.

Bottom line is, cost of manufacturing is going up all around. Things aren't the same like before in this hurting economy. Very high end sales were just not happening so something like the Classic 3 is just what VPI needed. An excellent sounding table at a price the current market can handle. The fact that it sounds amazing is just a testament to their engineering quality and standards.

Personally, I will be giving the Classic 3 aluminum platter a run in my system against the HRX acrylic platter and doing a comparison of the sound. According to VPI, neither is really better than the other as both are fantastic sounding. One might be more "agreeable" in a given system than the other. There isn't a universal upgrade across the board for either platters. Just have to try and see.

Hope that is some good information for you. If I was looking for a high end turntable in this current market, I would buy the VPI Classic 3 in a heartbeat. An all American made quality product with tech support that is always a phone call away. Try calling the manufacturers of other tables and see if you can ever talk to someone who actually engineers the product and gives honest opinions. NOT HAPPENING :)

Thanks a lot for the insight Shaizada. This was really helpful.
All in all a TNT6 is still a better TT than the classic series.

yeah it should be but it is not i tried the combo but the amp which is only 15 wpc needs speakers capable of handling 50 to 80 wpc it has solid toshiba germanium output transistors which have a very similar sound that of valve amplifiers . it is a true blue dual mono construction amplifier and has independent tone control pre amplifier boards and independent power amplifier boards . it was called pre main amplifier i think a term used for integrated amplifiers during the time this amplifier was made ( 1967 ) . even the input RCA jacks at the back are at least 3 inches apart for the left and right channels and it is almost 70 percent hand wired . this thing is driving the hell out of my 3 way kenwood speakers which are capable of handling 80wpc .

My philips ga 242

Is the arm at the back a pick-up or is it for record cleaning purposes? Think I see a cable running from it. Just curious!!

The Philips Hi-Q International amp was quite a hit back in the day, my dad had the speakers. Assume you have the stand-alone tuner-amp. There was a version with an amp built into the side of the turntable as well. There was also a Hi-Fi international version which was also quite popular but expensive though. Nice stuff.

Also, noticed on your signature that you have an Akai GX 265 D. Is it still working and do you listen to it? It would be nice if you can post a few pics in the Tape Showcase section. I hope to venture into the open-reel world someday. Just love vinyl and tape machines.

hi reubensm , you are right about the philips hiq and hifi international setup and my turntable is of the philips hifi international range . the arm which you see is for cleaning the dust and also for removing the static . the wire which you noticed has been connected to ground terminal of the amp which aides in grounding the static . about the akai reel to reel , yes it is in perfect working condition and i use it daily will upload the pic in the tape section soon .

Hi guys
Managed to sneak a Vintage DD fully auto JVC TT at a reasonable price.JVC QL-Y5F JVC QL-Y5F Owners Manual, Service Manual, Schematics, Free Download | Vinyl Engine
Came with a Shure Cart with an Indian stylus.Have ordered a JICO stylus. Real listening shall happen when it arrives. Anyway, first impression is not bad at all. Motor is rock steady and the electro - dynamic tonearm damping seems to work (sound seems smoother with the damping on) .
Sound quality- Cleaner (especially the base), fuller and slightly warmer than my entry level Technics P Mount Belt drive.
The downside-most of the controls are electric/electronic.Keeping my fingers crossed for that regarding any future maintenance.
Cheers
Himadri
