Sir Garrard 401 has Arrived!!

Can you post some pics of the different stages, I am very particular about getting my plints to look very classy. Most of the guys I've come across just leave the plinths with the plain ply look. I am considering enclosing the multilayered plinth in a teak wood box (looking at options). Word has spread around Trivandrum that my 401 is on the way. You won't believe this but many are actually wanting to visit, just to glimpse of the legendary Garrard. Many have not seen these decks in their lifetimes :)

I may be making a rank assumption here but I don't think there are too many, if not any Garrard 301 or 401s in Trivandrum :)

Sure Reuben. Ill update the post with pictures from its various stages.

I agree, I am as well very particular that the plinth gets a classy finish and I intent to have a glossy finish in the end. The custom spikes will also be well designed. I am also planning a Stainless Steel Garrard emblem to be put on the plinth. I will also try to get the emblem engraved on the dust cover.

Well, what can I say! The 401 is truly a legend and as you said many may never get a chance to see this beauty. I was fortunate to see and even have a listen to these at Mr. Kuruvila's place in one of the best setup environments. You are probably the first to own one of these in Trivandrum :).

I think the original Garrard version was made of bakelite. Would be interested in one myself :)

Sure. When I get started Ill make one for you as well.

I was thinking of one in a rectangular shape with Garrard 401 printed with the original fonts used and with blue color for the fonts?

You guys sound really excited about the plinth. Yes, plywood is the most practical material for us. It is easily available and quite easy to work on. I have just finished making Lenco Plinth for my friend. It is looking beautiful and majestic. He preferred natural finish and It was finished with mat finish . It also sounds great with a AT 1007 tone arm and Shure 44-7 cart. A better cart would have made it sound even better.

If anyone has a drawing of the logo in Coreldraw it can be laser cut in 1 or 2 mm stainless steel or brass or thicker acrylic. Is this meant to be stuck on the plinth?

I am also interested (for restoring my 301) if someone is doing it.

Hey Joshua - So when I am making this I will make one for you as well. Imm making one for Reuben as well.

Yes was looking at being stuck or screwed onto the plinth. Stainless Steel will look good. When I start with the design plan I will share it with you guys before it's done. I've got a very classy design in mind :)

Cheers...

Hey Reuben / Joshua - Starting the planning for the Garrard Stainless Steel name plate / badge for the plinth. I've shortlisted below a few designs. Let me know which one should we choose:

One:

Two - I really like this design. This will need to be stuck or can plan for rivets as well.

Three - This will need to be stuck.

Original Garrard Logo - This will exactly be engraved on the plate with 401 & 301 right next to the logo. Should we use the original blue color or just use black?

If you are planning on making an engraved plate to affix on the front of the plinth, then the original font of the Garrard logo would look best, but without the 401/301 alongside, IMO.

Thanks for the tip. Lets see how this goes. Yes the original Garrard logo itself will look very good.

Cheers...

RP, was wondering if we can do one for my Lenco as well using the original Lenco font? Also please let me know how much it costs. Thanks.

RP, how did you get the cut-out for the 401 plinth, on ply? What tools did you use?

Sure Reuben - To start, I had a friend of mine from UK share a very accurate cutout. In-fact he shared a design on the complete size of me plinth i.e. 19" by 20". Got a couple of prints done 1:1 which really helped. Now, dint do the cutting myself however my carpenter used a hand wood cutting machine and he did all 6 layers very accurately. Once they were stuck, they were just perfect and just like the template.

I first had enquired for CNC cutting however for this plinth, CNC is not required as it requires templates and drawings to be given. A seasoned carpenter can get this work done easily and accurately with a machine cutter.

PS: Apologies, I was supposed to share that cutout template with you. Emailing right away. Have a look.

RP has got it right. a good carpenter can do the plinth even without a template. I never used any template and my plinth was as good as any made. But an accurate template can make life easier .

RP, I am waiting for you to complete you plinth, to start work on mine. I am going to start with mounting the 401 on a plywood plank on a stand and then graduate from there to a plinth. I want to get a feel of the difference as I graduate to a proper plinth. I became a bit doubtful as I read that some prefer box-type cabinets to multi-layered plinths because multi-layered plinths at times over dampen these decks. I am a total novice and want to find out :)

Well as you may have noticed on my signature, my SL3200 is still my primary turntable :)

Absolutely Reuben. This is where my plinth build has reached, 90% finished. All layers have been cut and stuck appropriately and the Veneer has also been completed as seen in the picture. The delay is only because of the carpenters non availability. Now its only pending the drilling of the holes for the motor, smoothening the rough edges and polishing to my preference. The custom spikes and discs have also been made. This should be ready this weekend.
