Sir Garrard 401 has Arrived!!

I'd like to get a Record Stabilizing Clamp for this as well. What do you suggest?

Cheers...

I've used one myself, but did not find it made any difference. Your experience may vary. Give it a shot. FM Magma fabricates a few variations of clamps of different weights. He also makes a stabilizing ring. I've not tried those, but I suspect that they might be more effective, especially with warped records. Fortunately the 401 can sail through without loss of speed even with this additional weighing down of the platter, something a low powered suspension belt drive would have difficulty with. There is, of course, the issue of convenience. I tend to keep the motor running for the entire duration of a listening session, lifting off the LP while the platter is spinning, because each start/stop puts in greater wear and tear on the idler wheel. With clamps and rings, there is the additional task of getting those off as well, which can be risky if your fingers slip - something that's bound to happen sometime, especially at a well fueled session :-) . Your call.

Rings are very nice theoretically, but inconvenient in practice. The number of times I have used mine can be numbered on my fingers:)

A clamp is (theoretically) supposed to couple the LP to the platter/mat assembly so as to prevent microscopic shifts in the LP as a consequence of stylus friction, and also to provide some damping. A lightweight clamp might not do the first job, unless it has a mechanism to fasten itself to the centre spindle once installed - something found in a few models. Yes, a heavier clamp would put in a greater burden on the drive mechanism, at least for the initial start up, after which the momentum of the assembly would ease things a bit. Does it all make a sonic difference? The jury is still out.

What a brilliant tip. This absolutely makes sense. I have noticed in a lot of videos people using this approach and this definitely increases life of the idler. I've always been a direct drive guy and its now to start learning some idling :).

just to throw the spanner to the works, lifting a spinning record can result in surface scratching, any thoughts?

Well the spanner it is :).

I cant comment as I've no experience yet with this. However I've seen a few videos of people doing this with their 301s & 401s I am assuming this wont have any effect on the record. Of course there is the element of doing this correctly I presume.

Can there be other effects as well....record center hole widening, affecting the spindle, warping or bending of records Etc?

Reuben / Joshua - Placed the order for the name plates. This should be ready by next week. In the interim, please can you guys PM me your respective addresses?

Totally 4 Name Plates. 2 Garrard 401s, One Garrard 301 and One Lenco L75

Cheers...

Gents - The 2nd tonearm has most probably been shortlisted. The choice is a Rega R200 tonearm. The experienced reckon this arm to be very good and should pair well with the 401. This is an S-Shaped tonearm. Can be easily modded to a 12incher if one would like to do so. I am only worried that I may not get the 222mm distance on this current plinth. If not, a great arm for the Technics 1200 init!!

Will keep you posted on this...

The Rega R200 tonearm has been finalized as a second tonearm for the 401. I need some suggestions for a Ceramic Cartridge. Please can you suggest something that will sound nice and not something very expensive.

Cheers...

lovely finish, an update from my end, had discussions with a local carpenter, friends suggested bringing some birch ply for me from the UK, yet to decide but cost is a factor now as wify has started questioning expenditure as she has been asking for new furniture and a new refrigerator.

nice Click !

How are you planning on mounting the arms ? Do check if the Rega can be mounted simply on top or it needs a arm base with a separate collar Under it- thats a problem with a Linn
