Sir Garrard 401 has Arrived!!

lovely finish, an update from my end, had discussions with a local carpenter, friends suggested bringing some birch ply for me from the UK, yet to decide but cost is a factor now as wify has started questioning expenditure as she has been asking for new furniture and a new refrigerator.

Birch Ply would be great! BTW, you get ready made birch ply plinths in UK priced very moderately. Give that a thought.

nice Click !

How are you planning on mounting the arms ? Do check if the Rega can be mounted simply on top or it needs a arm base with a separate collar Under it- thats a problem with a Linn

Hey arj - Well, this arm still needs a mounting hole. I spoke with Mr. Murthy and he said he can have the cut done preciously without any damage to the current plinth. Now that's some respite :). BTW, I do have more that 222mm distance for the 2nd arm so that's good.

If I don't go ahead with the above plan, this will surely get onto my Technics 1200 which is a great upgrade and match :).

This guy used to be the most moderately priced vendor: Plinth for Garrard 401 12 inches sme palisander (rosewood) | eBay

To add: what I would love you G401 owners is to built a plinth like this. This example is 2 layered. You can add more layers. The advantage of this design is the cut out is minimised to the bare minimum required, thus retaining maximum weight. This, of course, assumes that you believe (like I do) that more weight in an idler drive turntable's plinth is better:) I am talking about something like this beautiful multi-layered design for the G301.

Oh no, those plinths cost as much as the 401 itself. Was planning to get a few cut ply sheets hand carried but that's going to take time. Honestly we finance guys don't have too much of spare time during this time of the year and hence, doing personal projects is always a challenge. I have some rose wood lying in my car porch which is also an option but i don't want to make something up and then suffer with rumble. I also have to take the L75 apart and get the fabrication done (closing of the chassis tonearm and lift holes) and then get it repainted. Looks like I'm going to have a busy time after June (our finance year end is in June).

Yes mate. Received the clamp light from pepperfry. Quite happy with it. I've dealt with them before and they are quite professional with their work. They just take about 7-10 days to deliver your product.

I was planning to buy some furniture from them so was looking at feedback. I still have no clue about how they ship furniture (sorry for a bit of a hijack)

Sure no problem. Why don't you give them a call. Their customer service is quite helpful. And yes, their furniture is quite attractive and most of which is sheesham.

Reuben & Joshua - My sincere apologies. The name plates are taking longer than expected. This is the same person who is making the dust cover for the 401 and its been over 25 days since. Small orders take a lot of time for completion with this person :(.

no worries RP, please take your time. I am yet to get started on the 401 project anyways.

I honestly feel using Birch ply could make only a marginal improvement to sound reproduction and it is not worth getting it all the way from abroad paying through your nose. I would stick to the best marine ply available in the country. It will depend on person to person I suppose.

Still awaiting Tonearms...

Cheers...

Looks majestic. Tonearms will only add to the beauty. Nice glass work & esp. that writing on it.

Yeah Saket. It does look majestic. These players really have their charm. Cant wait for the tonearms to be setup. Becoming a little impatient now as its been a while since this is sitting on the rack without being played :).

Gents - Received the secondary tonearm today. The Rega R200. Its in fantastic nick. This comes with some high quality RCA interconnects. Photos to be in tomorrow.

I think this will be the right protractor to use "Rega Baerwald alignment protractor v.2" or even the "Rega Stevenson alignment protractor v.2".

Cheers...

Congrats RP.

Rega arm holes are about 25 mm diameter. You will need to drill a 25 mm hole from top to bottom, assuming the tonearm cable in not the removable type. Measuring the pivot point is straightforward - measure 222 mm from the center of spindle to appropriate location. Mark a dot at 222 mm (or was it 223 mm?), and this dot becomes the center of the arm hole to be drilled.

For alignment, the best would be a Rega protractor. Do look around for that. If you can't find that, I will scan and mail you the protractor of Origin Live arm, which uses the Rega geometry (AFAIK). It will be the second best option.

RP, congrats on getting a Rega tone arm. Rega tone arms are really well constructed. I am using a RB 251 on one of my AR players. It's really a very musical and goes well with most carts including MC carts. Mounting it on the plinth may not be very difficult. Make sure you get the distance spot on for the best results. all the best

Both of these seem to be single-null point protractors. Aren't there two-null protractors around? I definitely have a bias for two-point adjustments. The Rega Baerwald with "how-to" is available here. The difference from two null-point protractors is that this one uses an arc along which the tip of the stylus must trace.

You can try the above, and also the regular Stupid Protractor (it has both the Baerwald and Loefgren in one sheet) and hear for yourself which produces the least IGD. The Stupid Protractor has worked very well for me.

PS: of the two choices you have listed, the Stevenson is the more limited of the two.
