Hi Guys been using the tv for the past few days..would like to post my observations and require your opinion...

The PQ is very good..
I updated the firmware..there was one available when i connected to wifi...after updation as mentioned in the thread for settings i do not see cinema 1 etc and also i see the option to turn ON/OFF motion facility..
Has any one seen the above changes ?

Also the sound output from tv hen connected to TATA SKY HD box is very good but i am unable to experience the same from SD box connected through component ..the pQ is also not good ( local dish provider ACN ) .

When playing movies through external HDD the sound output is what can i say the vocals are really low,,I am unable to her the dilogues clearly where as the music is fine..I am playing BR rips 720..HD rips..
Any suggestion to improve this/Overcome this draw back...

I a planning to buy a HT shortlisted yamaha 299 as seen in the forums..as well it is in the budget of around 30 k ...

please advise....

Cinema 1 & Cinema 2 were available even before the firmware update. There's LED Motion Mode which can be switched on/off.

Sound & PQ from HD Box will be always better than that coming from SD Box because HD Box uses HDMI cable which is a digital cable where as SD Box uses analog cables. There will be signal loss in analog cables.

Audio quality will be compromised for video quality and final size of the rips. So vocal part is low in most of the rips. Once you connect the TV to a HTiB audio will be fine.

Yamaha YHT-299 is good. But I doubt whether it will be available for 30K. Onkyo HTS-3500 is also good. YHT-299 has active sub woofer where as HTS-3500 has passive sub woofer.

Just to clarify, HD box gives better video quality because the box receives higher resolution video with higher bitrate and not just because of HDMI cable. Video quality on SD box will still be inferior if it had HDMI out port.

Well, this is partially true. First, the audio quality isn't compromised in blueray rips. Audio is encoded at atleast 128kbps which is good enough for giving good audio quality. Infact some blueray rips have 5.1 AC3/AAC/DTS audio. Audio quality will be bad only if you have a camera print or something like that.

The reason the vocals seem low is because the movies usually have higher dynamic range (highs/lows) audio than typical music and the small TV speakers are unable to reproduce that range. If you increase the volume, then vocals will be audible but in some other parts of the movie (eg. some action sequence), it might sound too loud. An home theater will help here because it has lots of audio processing features eg. DRC which enhances low volume content so that it will audible better even at lower volumes.

No, SD channels don't come at higher resolution, but I am not sure if they come with different bitrate (unlikely) or if HD box upscales SD content better.

it means that i am not able to see my photo/movie collection properly by connecting HDD to USB?

is this resolved after firmware updating?

i would appreciate immediate reply from Sony 42-W700B users - if you people could test this on your TVs and let us know then it would really help.

On the first day itself, I ran into one major problem with this model. I wanted to see some of my photos and videos, so I plugged in my USB External Hard Disk (320 GB). I found out that, it cannot display my photos and videos in the directory view. It was picking up any random photo/video to display from the hard disk. In the thumbnail view, i was able to see 27 items that were randomly picked from the Hard disk, and every time i connect it to the TV, I see some random photos/videos that were present in the hard disk.

From the Options button, tried to switch to Folder View, but that also didn't help. Only a few folders were being shown, and that too not in any order, some random folders were picked that were way inside.

Contacted the showroom people from where I bought this TV, and found out that the problem was with this ONLY model. This model was taking too much time ( waited for at least half an hour to load the pics and still didn't get the photos/videos in a proper view). They tested on different models ( KDL- 32W700B, KLV-40R452A, KDL -50W800B ) and all these models were supporting the correct view and order, and also it was able to load the external Hard disk drive pretty fast.

Apart from this, the Bluetooth pairing is not happening on this model. It seems that there is some serious problem with this model.

Also, contacted the Sony people who came for the demo and installation of the TV. They gave some random answers to format the hard disk drive!!


Could you please help me out on this?? It seems this model by Sony is faulty.

hmm...havent tried using the smart features of this tv..as extensive as you said..but its been said that the smart features suck for this tv mostly..still did you try updating the firmware...? its supposed to be a stability fix for the internet features..might be some improvement over the previous ones

I didn't see any option for folder-wise classification yet. There's just a broad classification like All, Music, Movies, Picture. So if you connect a HDD and you select Picture, the TV will get all the Picture files in the HDD.

but i have heard that this TV is not fetching all of the Photos/Videos from HDD/USB and showing only few photos/videos randomly.

This is the single reason for which i have delayed my purchase and i want you guys to help me out.

I am a bit confused between the latest one that is R48 and W700 B I am getting W700 B 42" for 60000 and R48 launch price is 55000/- both of them have bravia engine but R48 is not a Smart TV but major features are similar like photo share, MHL etc. My question is getting an smart TV is a good option or non smart will do for me. And how to check the TV usage. I am just worried whether the dealer is giving me a model which he kept for display. Any suggestions for the above.
PS: I am not finding any reviews about Sony KDL R48 online. It is available in stores but not much information is available on web.

If you are going for sony go with w6 series minimum. The r series does not have the x reality pro engine, and are not made be sony as far as I know.
W700 you should get for 56-57 as it's already been couple of months now since it's on the market, please go through this thread for further details. I am personally very happy with the w700.

Will 89 degree be enough in normal living room?
