ST50 Owners' Thread - First impressions, Reviews, Tweaks, etc.

Hi just4kix,

I had gone to Baner's shop on weekend and checked ST50 and GT50. couldn't find much difference in them. I am also now inclining towards 50" ST50. Might buy it by this weekend. I remember you mentioned that you bought your TV from Rajesh Trading Company, will check the price with them on Wednesday.

Thanks for your help.

Need to find out in the forum if anyone else is also planning to buy ST50 in Pune, can get some additional discount if we go in the group.
My impressions exactly between GT50 and ST50 - could not find much difference and hence could not justify premium for GT50. Actually, come to think of it, while watching DTH-HD material from TS, I couldn't make out diff between XT50 and ST50 either at a distance of 8+ feet - blu-ray was different matter.

ST50 is a great choice. There are rave reviews all over the net:

Of course, I am not a videophile.

Yesterday night, I was watching Sherlock Holmes (part I starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, et al).

I can't express how good the film looked on this TV. The film has a lot of blacks - black overcoats, black coaches, dark places, shadows, etc. It was a real treat to see that picture was really expressive with fine detailing. And the PQ of the panel was really complementing the experience. Now this is where 1L+ is really well spent and value well returned. :yahoo:

In this week (of holidays), I am going to check out on The Dark Knight which was used by FM haisaikat for many of his reference checks. I will post later.

With regards to above ...

I had only heard about blacks and the magic thereof. I was simply a paper believer till this point. I watched the movie again yesterday. The performance simply blew me away. The movie is not something great and would not even be in IMDB Top 200 or anything. But when it comes to referencing black levels, I am sure that it will be in contention.

The question on most people's mind will be "What so great about black colour? Isn't black simply absence of colour?". I won't blame you. I also thought that black colour in TV was something of an overstatement until I had a projector. I then began understanding its importance. Afterall, true black is a colour that is impossible to produce (because it means total absence of light), just as absolute zero cannot be achieved. But with the performance of yesterday, I would say "phenomenal".

Now I am not just trying to praise my own TV. Perhaps there are a few models such as GT50 or VT50 that maybe better; at least on paper they are. Maybe some top LEDs also can match this. I do not have any real reference and would like to see this on LED some day before I can make an honest comparison.

Anyone (from Pune or nearby) who wishes to see ST50 and how it looks at home, is most welcome to my home (just PM me). This will probably give a true feeling on its general performance because showroom conditions simply cannot be compared to home. And perhaps you will also understand why I am so overboard at this point.

Oled TVs and sony's crystal LED are said to have overcome this barrier and produce no light when not necessary.

Also, as most people think, black levels are not about black colour. It brings that much sexiness to other colours. Brings out real 'pop' as opposed to synthesised pop of the LEDs.

Checkout the pics.

The difference between XT50 and ST50 plasmas in living room condition is soo high, it is like comparing apples and oranges.

It is NOT like comparing 4 series and 6 series samsungs for example.
XT50 and ST50 will look like TVs from different era with a 10 year difference between them.

Ofcourse in dark room conditions, they will be more or less same.

Depends on your room conditions. You might even prefer the LCD/LEDs to entry level plasmas. For example, if your room is moderate to high amount of ambient light, the 40EH5000 samsung will beat the 42XT50 hands down. Both cost 50k.

But then, at 85k, I dont think there is ANY TV which will make ST50 stoop.
If you can wait till the festive season, the ST50 can be taken home for around 70-75k if last year is any indication.

Is the way to access the Service Menu to check the usage hours the same in the ST50 as in ST30?

Same method. Just that menu layout has slightly changed. To access srv-tool, press 2 twice after 'Adjustment menu' is displayed.

Actually I am not too sure about that. I checked last Diwali. The 50st30 was still being quoted at 110k (pre-negotiation). At least in Pune, prices do not come down too much. However there are shopping festivals now and then when some discounts are offered.

The whole of my previous post was for 42".. That was what the guy was interested.
50ST50 will hover around 90-95k at max. (without the HT).
