The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

thanks all..any review for 51F5500 plasma Samsung..? this model is not having Real Black Pro Panel Motion Judder Canceller will it affect the PQ. Any user's here for f5500 ?

Absence of Real Black Pro Panel means more reflections and absence of Motion Judder Canceller means less soap opera effect but a bit more judder.Out of the two more reflection is the only real issue.

I understand that judder is sometimes a natural consequence of transfer of film material onto a disk whether dvd or bd (more pronounced here due to high resolution which has more defined edges).
Lcds amplify the judder effect due to a secondary source --backlight. So they go for frame interpolation kicking of a disastrous digital camera video effect killing the spirit of 24 fps cinema.

My question is , between two plasmas with 24hz de-judder switched off, what makes one set look more smoother and the other less? What could be the reason for the smoothness on one set though the de-judder mechanism is totally off on both sets?

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

I can highly recommend the P60ST60 - the picture is just gorgeous. I have had it for just over a month and it makes my old 2007 Panny plasma look like an LED (meaning, very bad!). The deepest blacks make the bezel really disappear, and well surpass even last years P55UT50, which I thought was pretty good too. I sometimes wish the pic could be a wee bit brighter, but other than that I am very happy. I know the F8500 is known to be a bit brighter, but of course at double the price. ST60 is probably the best value in the market currently.

One note - S60 may be an even better buy for those having dark rooms. In rooms with any light it will be a black mirror that may be difficult to live with on daily basis. ST60 is much much better in that respect.

@Dirac

Some companies have judder correction algorithm as part of their picture processing and it cannot be turned off,they could do one level of judder correction ad default and have another level as an option, so even when the option is turned off there is a lower level of correction happening in the default picture processing.

I am wondering why CNET or any review sites did not review 51F5500 as this is mid range model and is competitive to 50S60 in india ( atleast VFM point of view ).

It is strange that samsung has fixed a price double the price of st60, which is already being commented to have almost same PQ as that of the higher end models of panasonic.
May be it betting high on brightness factor and also that consumers may not go for panny due to its uncertain plasma business.:rolleyes:

No doubt ST60 is overall winner this year but panny is known to sell inferior products in asia, I still believe that Sammy is offering a very good price for 64F8500 (inr 180 k after bargaining) which i dont think panny can match for 65st60 in india

If 65ST60 is priced anything above 2 lacs (street price), then they better not introduce the same here. It's going to be a non-seller. Number of people who might shell out more than 2 lacs for the set will be nearly negligible.

BTW, the 65ST50 which was never available at shops are available online for much beyond 2 lacs at Indiatimes. If that is any indication, then they will definitely priced it more than 2 lacs initially unless they realise that it's a dud.

In fact last year they introduced 55ET5D LED at a much higher price initially, even costlier than 55HX750 of Sony. But now the same is available at 96k at infibeam, the descend of more than 60k was within last 3-4 months.

Could not find any showroom in Chennai to demo Samsung 51f5500 .."They all say not yet arrived"..

>>>

No info. re. availability of the 50 inch Viera GT50D.

Panasonic brand shops either say they have no information on new models/new stock for June or that new models will arrive in ten days' time- which they did even a fortnight ago.

My guess is they do not know as Panasonic has not disseminated new model and/or new stock information to its brandshops. The dealers are absolutely clueless.

I presume the new for 2013 models will be launched some time from now ( maybe when the festive season is on the horizon - August/September) to enable existing stocks are cleared. New models will obviously have new ( read: high) prices.

Incidentally anyone who has gone through an ST60 vs GT60 comparo, preferably 42 or 50 inches?

Plasma fans can rejoice in the fact that cnet specifically mentioned the best and most respected led--sony w900 cannot come closer to gt60 in PQ.
Well, that speaks volumes about PQ of gt60!!!

Agree, brightness does make a difference, but I won't pay double the amount for that!

No idea about India prices, but in US (pre-tax):

60ST60 = $1500
60F8500 = $2900

65ST60 = $2400
64F8500 = $3400

Also, I believe Samsung units are known to have higher failure rates.

if panny offers the same price similar to the US in india just like sammy has done I will take a dip at chowpatty beach (read dump yard). BTW I was under the impression that this is an indian based forum.

Kudos to Sammy for pricing the F8500 at US equivalent. I think a first from any of the top brands. Normally it is always, 25-50% higher.

I think, even if they can introduce at the same price as Sammy, they will have a clear winner at hand. But as you know, as they have proved over the last few seasons, their (Pana) supply chain and demand projection is a big mess.

I wont be surprised if panny launches (which is highly unlikely) 65ST60 at double the price of US.

Booked the 64F8500 plasma for 1.85L after returning the LG LM7600 LED because I could not get used to the motion banding/DSE in sports scenes(also visible on solid colors when camera pans)... I then tried many LED models, every single LED had that to some extent. Guess I couldnt get used to the LED after moving from my 5.5 year old plasma.

Anyways will get delivery of the F8500 plasma in 3 days. Yes, its a blind buy - trusting reviews.
