The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

>>>

Soum,

My remarks, in line, below, fyr :

Panasonic technicians don't know much about this issue with plasma. the guy came to my house even don't know how to open the service menu. When I opened it for him to check usage hour he told me not to open it again. I know if you mess up with service menu accidentally you will be in really big trouble. Lucky for me S60 has a option in normal menu to check usages hours. I don't know if Gt 50 has it or not.

>>>

Noted. What trouble will ensue if I "mess up" the service menu on the remote?
I am reasonably sure that the GT, which in its day, was above the S/ST models, will have means to check usage hours.

what was the price for 42Gt50? GT50 is any-day better than s60. If ST60 is available I would advised you to go for that. But why didn't you went for 50"?

>>>

1. ST60 is unavailable, atleast in the states of Maharashtra & Delhi. I got a post about the availability of one ST60 in Bangalore, but it would have been too much of a hassle. A VT might have been a different kettle of fish, though.:)

2. I went for the GT50 for the PQ, in which it was demonstrably superior to the S60D in the demo together. Both 42 inches and 50 inches suit me fine.

The GT50 is slightly more expensive than the S60. I paid 80k less 1k =79k for the GT. The 1k is the exchange price I got for the best PQ I have seen in India ( the 1994 model CRT Onida KY Series 21 inch!)

There are no GTs left in stock, atleast not to my information.

Just to share my experience..
At first I also thought I will go for 42" as tv will be in my bedroom. But one day I saw a X50 in ezone and that size just grab my attention, And decided to go for 50", Further find that s60 is avilabe in 50" and 60" size. Now 50" look perfectly normal(even better) from 9'-10' distance. In my office we have a 42" display, now it looks pretty small in size from that distance.

>>>

I might have been tempted to go for the larger S60, but in my only deciding factor - PQ - the GT50 was head and shoulders above the S60 (in the demo, in the showroom) and so it became a no brainer.

It was a little bit like choosing Barry Richards for his timeless, simple style over the more flamboyant, 'loud', Viv Richards.

Finally, these choices are very individualistic!

Dirac,
I will have to check and find out. Right now basis the advise received from the experts here I have kept contrast, sharpness, colour & brightness at low levels. Also I ensure that channels are changed after about thirty minutes.
Also use the Aspect button to zoom in basis the need to not have the channel logo and the static Tata Sky logo.
Hope this will go a long way to minimise the risk of IR.

Continuing on my zt60 sagaa...

Delhi custom guys detained the package for physical examination.
It is lying in delhi for the past 4 days.
Hope they dont want to verify the black levels.

The courier guy says that in his experience this is the first time they are detaining a tv in his experience ,and may be because of the size of the package.

I dont know what will be the fate of the KING and also myself...

I think they will charge duty on the same, also some bribe on top of that, post which they will release the same.

So, it all depends how much time it takes for the forwarder to strike the deal with the customs officer on duty and bribe to get it released.

excited now , waiting to see the set in action.

Dirac, keeping all our fingers crossed. I happen to know what importing a fine equipment for strictly personal (non -commercial) use implies wrt our 'socialistic' custom laws & raj.

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

If this physical verification thing takes more than a week, i will shoot an RTI at Customs India.
I wont pay a single rupee as bribe.

Now the Customs want me to give a declaration that the tv is only for personal use, duly signed by an authorized person.
Funny.

Funny.

It's just about warming their pockets. The forwarder should be able to manage that at a minimal cost as its something they do on a daily basis. It's surprising the way they are handling this. They are just delaying clearing the shipment because they are not getting any bribe. So give a run around until the shipment owner gets frustrated and pays up.

Let's see what next they come up with.

Still waiting for the D day, once you have it setup and running.

Also this is a good experience to learn from for others importing Big Tv's from abroad.

Recently I got a turntable shipped from ebay Germany. Mumbai customs held it back as they wanted to know the total cost of the item and the purpose of import. I emailed them the paypal invoice and told them its strictly for personal use. They were satisfied with the response and released the parcel in a few days. Not a single penny was demanded nor paid illegally, nor any agent was hired to get the parcel cleared. I did end up paying the customs duty as per the cost of the item.

So my suggestion would be to furnish the information asked for, and follow up over phone and email.

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

I had similar issues when I imported a (used) refurbished as new EMT turntable from Germany in 2012. Finally, as a last resort I told my German friend who imports German hifi equipment to import it on my behalf as it was easier to do so by him. I paid all the customs, clearance & domestic transportation charges.
I recall making it a point to the German exported to mention in his invoice that the turntable was for "personal, non-commercial use only".

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

I recall making it a point to the German exported to mention in his invoice that the turntable was for "personal, non-commercial use only".

In my case, this information was not mentioned on the invoice by the seller. In fact, the customs officer told me that had the seller followed the instructions given on CN 23 form, the parcel would have been cleared faster.

So in case anyone wants to import something, ensure that the seller/shipper attaches a fully filled CN 23 form to the parcel.
