The Movies I Liked

I caught up with The Librarian movie series, a made for TV movie series that is a cross between Indiana Jones and National Treasure.

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (TV Movie 2004) - IMDb - Introduces Noah Wyle as The Librarian, whose job is to protect various historical artefacts in a hidden section of the library. In this movie, The Librarian is required to go deep into the Amazon jungles to find The Spear of Destiny and protect it from falling into the wrong hands.

The Librarian: Return to King Solomon's Mines (TV Movie 2006) - IMDb - The Librarian returns for another adventure deep in the jungles of Africa while searching for King Solomon's mines and lost treasures.

The Librarian: The Curse of the Judas Chalice (TV Movie 2008) - IMDb - The final movie in The Librarian trilogy, who must find the Judas chalice and protect it to save the world from an army of vampires.

If you can look past the limited budget/sparse CGI, the series is entertaining enough. It's not Indiana Jones, and there is no Harrison Ford, but its still good and entertaining without really taxing your brain while still maintaining a good dose of tongue in cheek humor.

Caught up on a few Amanda Peet movies over the past few days

A Lot Like Love (2005) - IMDb - This is a regular love story about a boy meets a girl only to separate and then meet again after a few years till they become best friends and finally get together at the end. However, this movie stands out especially for the awesome chemistry between Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher. Their chemistry and how they play off of each other elevates the movie to something special. Definitely recommend this one.

The Whole Nine Yards (2000) - IMDb - An entertaining enough action comedy about an ex-hitman who the mob wants to get even with. Bruce Willis is in the zone as always, Matthew Perry is entertaining though not on the ball in terms of the comedy, Amanda Peet is smoking hot, but the real stunner here is Natasha Henstridge. Rosanna Arquette is ok and Michael Clarke Duncan and Kevin Pollak are wasted. Entertaining fare though and can be watched for the stars.

The Whole Ten Yards (2004) - IMDb - A needless sequel that shouldn't have been made. Bruce Willis does not strike a chord in this one like in the first movie. Even Natasha Henstridge seems to have lost her charm, but Amanda Peet does dig in deeper and Matthew Perry again seems a bit lost. Definitely can be given a miss unless you really are the patient type who wants to complete the entire movie series.

The Ex (2006) - IMDb - Another lame Zach Braff and Jason Bateman comedy along with Amanda Peet. The story is about a chef who gets laid off and has to work for his father-in-law where another employee starts to move in on his wife. Not very entertaining and not very funny either, and perhaps it would have been better if there was more of Amanda Peet.

Griffin & Phoenix (2006) - IMDb - It is the story of Dermot Mulroney who plays Griffin, a man dying from cancer. He needs Phoenix played by Amanda Peet and predictably falls in love with her and wants to make the best of the remaining time he has left to live. That basically means having and doing everything that has otherwise been put off to a later date. High on romance, and especially made beautiful by the excellent performances of both Amanda Peet and Dermot Mulroney. The performances are top-notch, the chemistry between them works wonderfully, and the movie works without delving into despair, pain or the tragedy it really is. Highly recommended though keep the tissues at hand along with the popcorn.

Identity (2003) - IMDb - An excellent psychological thriller about a group stranded at a motel and cut off from the rest of the world because of rains and flash floods. Everyone is a stranger, but somehow has a background story that links them together from their past. Soon everybody starts getting killed off at the motel and it is up to an ex-cop and a cop who is transporting a prisoner to catch the killer and prevent more people from being killed off. The movie works thanks in part largely to its ensemble cast (the first pairing of John Cusack and Amanda Peet) as well as the story and the treatment. Multiple viewings will in fact bring more stuff up instead of becoming predictable or even repetitive. Highly recommended if you're into this genre.

Martian Child (2007) - IMDb - Its about a down on his luck (personally) science fiction writer and a young boy who thinks he is from Mars. Another pairing for John Cusack and Amanda Peet who work very well together as well as sibling Joan Cusack. Good performances from everybody. Not a very flashy movie, everything about it is subtle including the story and the performances, but all of that works in its favor which makes the movie work as a whole. Recommended even if you're not a fan of the stars simply because it works as a feelgood movie.

2012 (2009) - IMDb - Yet another pairing for Amanda Peet and John Cusack in this big budget Hollywood outing about the apocalypse and the end of the world. I am pretty sure most of the world would have seen this movie and that goes for most folks on this forum too, so I won't go too much into the details or the story. Good special effects, limited performances as everybody seems to be on the run always, but nonetheless a good watch for a lazy afternoon with popcorn and friends/family along for company. I've seen it in the past, but wanted to catch up on all Amanda Peet movies and especially the pairing with John Cusack.

Watched :Buno Haansh"

Based on the novel by Samaresh Majumdar.
Buno Haansh is the thrilling story of Amal - an ordinary guy from an ordinary family who gets tempted by the world of wealth and consumerism and leaves his safe and ordinary existence for a life on the wild side. A close friend introduces him to the underworld, and Amal quickly gets seduced and then trapped into a web of greed, lust and crime. Will he be able to escape?

Watched 'Aritificial Intelligence' by Steven Spielberg. A Robot Child who develops human feelings. Beautiful movie. especially first half.

You're Next (2011) - IMDb - Nice premise about a family get-together for the weekend when they are attacked and hunted by a gang wearing animal masks. Very soon and one by one, members of the family and their spouses/boyfriends/girlfriends begin to die, except one girlfriend (Sharni Vinson) who refuses to die and in fact has her own set of hunting and killing skills that help her to not only stay alive, but also begin to kill the attackers herself. A decent thriller, that could have been much better with better treatment. Still not a bad watch though not for the squeamish.

Head Over Heels (2001) - IMDb - Not even passable romantic comedy fare about a young FBI agent and a group of models who live next door. Nothing much to write about, and only seemingly entertaining for the pretty faces. Probably for the teenagers.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - IMDb - An okay story, about a widower and his young son who wants to find a new mother for himself and wife for his father, which prompts him to call in a radio station. Enter the pretty Meg Ryan and an otherwise ordinary movie is made much better. Good chemistry between the leads Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan though it should satiate the women folk and the diehard romantics amongst us.

Simply Irresistible (1999) - IMDb - Silly story about a very young Sarah Michelle Gellar who comes across a magical crab and overnight turns into a world-class chef and how she finds love with Sean Patrick Flanery. Strictly for fans of SMG.

Vendetta (2013) - IMDb - Good premise, made terrible by bad acting and bad handling of the script. A Special Ops soldier returns home after the brutal murder of his parents by a street gang. The cops are not able to help and so it is up to our Special Ops soldier to take revenge and get to the bottom of things. This he does by eliminating each gang member one at a time who are obviously no match for a highly trained/skilled soldier who can kill with his bare hands. Interesting premise, and one would have loved to see a Special Ops soldier tear apart more limbs especially when giving it to the really bad guys. Too much talk and less action ruin what would have been otherwise a good flick.

Safe House (2012) - IMDb - An okay movie but an excellent performance by the great Denzel Washington and ably supported by Ryan Reynolds who surprisingly does not disappoint. It's about a rogue intelligence officer, played by Denzel Washington, who starts selling national secrets for money and how the CIA and the other intelligence communities around the world want to capture and kill to prevent their dirty laundry from being washed in the public. So you have the entire world chasing Denzel Washington and only Ryan Reynolds helping him. You can pretty much guess how it all ends, but all said and done Denzel does hold up his end when it comes to acting chops and that alone makes the movie watchable.

Just Go with It (2011) - IMDb - Good Adam Sandler comedy that is hilarious in parts. The story is about a plastic surgeon who creates a fake and abusive wife to generate sympathy and dates for himself, but without any long-term commitment. Problems arise when he falls for a younger woman and finds himself trapped in his own lies and is forced to come up with a fake wife and fake kids. Good comedy romp that will keep you entertained without too much thought. Apart from the leads like Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston you also have Nicole Kidman in a very spirited performance.

Re: The Movie I Liked

Saw Haider yesterday with my parents. Movie is well directed and acted. Maybe Shahids best performance till date. My dad didn't liked it. He enjoyed more in bang bang. Mom liked it but didn't liked the ending. Same with me. I felt they should have given more space to issues in Kashmir rather than putting all emphasis on relationship between tabu and menon and revenge by Shahid. Kudos to Vishal for capturing beauty of Kashmir. Also, Irrfan Khan deserved more screen time. He is such a powerhouse of talent.

This is the kind of movie I won't watch ever again. It's depressing.

The Judge
Amazing. Depressing at times, funny at others, this movie will definitely move you at times. Career best performance by Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall. I will be highly surprised if they don't get nominated for Oscars. In fact entire cast is superb. They could have shorten it a bit but then the character development would have suffered. Don't miss it if you like family dramas.

Rating - 4.5/5

Watched a Bengali Movie "Chaar" (four) yesterday. Liked first 3 stories and 4th one is a bit weaker than the other 3. Saswato has really evolved into a great actor in the last 3-4 years.
