Caught up on a few Amanda Peet movies over the past few days
A Lot Like Love (2005) - IMDb - This is a regular love story about a boy meets a girl only to separate and then meet again after a few years till they become best friends and finally get together at the end. However, this movie stands out especially for the awesome chemistry between Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher. Their chemistry and how they play off of each other elevates the movie to something special. Definitely recommend this one.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000) - IMDb - An entertaining enough action comedy about an ex-hitman who the mob wants to get even with. Bruce Willis is in the zone as always, Matthew Perry is entertaining though not on the ball in terms of the comedy, Amanda Peet is smoking hot, but the real stunner here is Natasha Henstridge. Rosanna Arquette is ok and Michael Clarke Duncan and Kevin Pollak are wasted. Entertaining fare though and can be watched for the stars.
The Whole Ten Yards (2004) - IMDb - A needless sequel that shouldn't have been made. Bruce Willis does not strike a chord in this one like in the first movie. Even Natasha Henstridge seems to have lost her charm, but Amanda Peet does dig in deeper and Matthew Perry again seems a bit lost. Definitely can be given a miss unless you really are the patient type who wants to complete the entire movie series.
The Ex (2006) - IMDb - Another lame Zach Braff and Jason Bateman comedy along with Amanda Peet. The story is about a chef who gets laid off and has to work for his father-in-law where another employee starts to move in on his wife. Not very entertaining and not very funny either, and perhaps it would have been better if there was more of Amanda Peet.
Griffin & Phoenix (2006) - IMDb - It is the story of Dermot Mulroney who plays Griffin, a man dying from cancer. He needs Phoenix played by Amanda Peet and predictably falls in love with her and wants to make the best of the remaining time he has left to live. That basically means having and doing everything that has otherwise been put off to a later date. High on romance, and especially made beautiful by the excellent performances of both Amanda Peet and Dermot Mulroney. The performances are top-notch, the chemistry between them works wonderfully, and the movie works without delving into despair, pain or the tragedy it really is. Highly recommended though keep the tissues at hand along with the popcorn.
Identity (2003) - IMDb - An excellent psychological thriller about a group stranded at a motel and cut off from the rest of the world because of rains and flash floods. Everyone is a stranger, but somehow has a background story that links them together from their past. Soon everybody starts getting killed off at the motel and it is up to an ex-cop and a cop who is transporting a prisoner to catch the killer and prevent more people from being killed off. The movie works thanks in part largely to its ensemble cast (the first pairing of John Cusack and Amanda Peet) as well as the story and the treatment. Multiple viewings will in fact bring more stuff up instead of becoming predictable or even repetitive. Highly recommended if you're into this genre.
Martian Child (2007) - IMDb - Its about a down on his luck (personally) science fiction writer and a young boy who thinks he is from Mars. Another pairing for John Cusack and Amanda Peet who work very well together as well as sibling Joan Cusack. Good performances from everybody. Not a very flashy movie, everything about it is subtle including the story and the performances, but all of that works in its favor which makes the movie work as a whole. Recommended even if you're not a fan of the stars simply because it works as a feelgood movie.
2012 (2009) - IMDb - Yet another pairing for Amanda Peet and John Cusack in this big budget Hollywood outing about the apocalypse and the end of the world. I am pretty sure most of the world would have seen this movie and that goes for most folks on this forum too, so I won't go too much into the details or the story. Good special effects, limited performances as everybody seems to be on the run always, but nonetheless a good watch for a lazy afternoon with popcorn and friends/family along for company. I've seen it in the past, but wanted to catch up on all Amanda Peet movies and especially the pairing with John Cusack.
