Caught up on a few Werewolf genre movies and no not any vampire love stories either. These are highly recommended werewolf movies that have the thrill/savagery of the werewolves and not the sappy romance that's associated with the recent Twilight and teen slasher movies. Typical gore and blood that comes with werewolf territory and quite a few scary moments... so be warned not for young kids at home, but otherwise will make for excellent entertainment with family/spouse and popcorn.
Wer (2013) - IMDb - Saw this movie on the recommendation of a couple of guys, and it's an excellent outing on the werewolf genre. If you're tired of the recent vampire and werewolf movies, especially of the Twilight ilk, then I highly recommend Wer. It's not so much a horror movie as much as an alternate take on the werewolf myth, nonetheless an extremely satisfying thriller/horror outing for fans of this genre. The movie also has the look of a documentary, rather than a big budget Hollywood movie, probably because it looks like it has been shot on a handy cam, as well as a close up and quickly moving shots that last a few seconds. The action however is thrilling and definitely maintains the tempo as well as excellent pacing required for a werewolf movie. Don't go by the IMDb ratings, I highly recommend this movie.
An American Werewolf in London (1981) - IMDb - This one is loads of fun, really entertaining fare. The story/premise is very simple, 2 friends are hitchhiking across England when they are attacked by a werewolf and one of them ends up dead and the other in the hospital where he begins to turn into a werewolf. Predictable story, and the predictable gore fest follows, but the entertainment does not let up one bit. Good performances from everyone, and especially Jenny Agutter for the hotness/wow factor. I personally wish the ending could have been different, but nonetheless a highly entertaining movie even in the werewolf genre.
Ginger Snaps (2000) - IMDb - This is a chick flick version of the werewolf genre, and very nicely done too. The story is about 2 sisters who are misfits, both at school and at home, and who have decided to either run away from home ASAP or die together. The story takes a turn when they are attacked by a werewolf and one of them is bitten and begins to turn into a werewolf herself. Not your average werewolf movie, this one addresses teenage/high school angst as well as Generation X and the feeling of being all alone in addition to the werewolf problem. It's a terrific movie, scary in parts, and completely entertaining all the way. Highly recommended.
Dog Soldiers (2002) - IMDb - Ever wish for the Army or an elite unit to take on supernatural creatures like werewolves or vampires? Well this is not that wish granted, but this movie features an Army unit training in the Scotland wilderness who come across a special Ops unit that has been completely decimated by a pack of werewolves. From then on begins a game of cat and mouse with the werewolves hunting down the Army unit and the unit trying to keep themselves alive till daylight. Excellent movie that does not let up for even a moment, and has a little bit of everything like humor, action, thrills, and several edge of the seat scary moments. Highly entertaining fare and definitely recommended.
The Howling (1981) - IMDb - Another excellent werewolf movie, and especially a mention of the actual wolf howling that will send a shiver down your back. A newscaster needs to take some time off from work and goes on a holiday with her husband, however the residents of the holiday destination village share a deadly secret and you can guess the rest. Thanks to the already mentioned wolf howling and the excellent atmosphere as well as the background music create an amazing thriller especially without the use of any CGI. Of course, the actual wolf transformation does indeed leave something to be desired especially in comparison to modern CGI effects, however none of that really detracts from one of the best werewolf movies ever. Barring the transformations as well as the attempt at a cheesy ending, this is an excellent werewolf outing and is highly recommended.
The Wolf Man (1941) - IMDb - Excellent classic from 1941, tells the story of Lon Chaney who returns home after 18 years after the death of his brother. He immediately takes up on a beautiful local, Evelyn Ankers and accompanies her and her friend to a local gypsy fortune teller where the friend is attacked and killed by a werewolf and also bites Lon Chaney. Therein begins Lon Chaney's transformation into a werewolf and the occurrence of mysterious deaths in the village which brings in the police and hunters on the lookout for a wolf. An excellent movie, good performances by everyone concerned though the special effects aren't exactly modern CGI. Nonetheless it's very high on the entertainment factor and comes highly recommended.
