Toshiba U79 and U80 Owners Discussion And Review !!

Seems like 55" u79 is available for North India now on Amazon. Hopefully 65" u79/80 also gets available soon

I too gained a lot of insights about viewing angle from the conversation between Marakk and LightGamer, I understood that viewing angle would always be an issue in a VA Panel, But We should always try to keep things cool, a healthy conversation will benefit every one,
also Every one has the right to post their opinion about their product and please note that opinion is different from recommendation,
My opinion about this TV.
I have this TV(U79 55")and I did not like the sound even a single bit and I have every right to expect a better sound because, I paid the money for this TV and I have had Tv's that sounded better at a much lower price point.
Motion processing is not at all good, there is always some issue when scene changes the transition is not smooth, a flash or some thing and it goes away when you do some changes in motion settings and again comes back after some time. have to wait till the next firmware update
Personally for me Viewing angle is still an issue, My mother who peeps from the kitchen is complaining that the image look's faded ,they are used to IPS panel in my Sony W900B,now I'm saving money to buy an OLED or Sony X wide(9500H) angle Tv next year.
so both me and my parents found this TV unusable at some situations in a day.

The flash that you mention, there was talk in H9G owner thread on avsforum about ghosting issues, if I recall correctly, and Hisense is also replacing TCON boards there to solve it, so it might not get resolved by software update..

Check that out, and use the examples collected there to check if it's the same issue or something else.

Every TV has had issues. 2018 OLEDs had chrominance overshoot that took a long time to reduce. 2018 Samsung models had big brightness fluctuations with subtitles. 2018 Sony OLEDs had many users complaining about sub-par Dolby Vision. 2019 OLED ones have had some with sound passthrough via HDMI. Here's where customer service comes into play.

If it's the same issue as H9G there, at least you know what needs to be done.

Good luck!

P.S. - I know this U7980 is not H9G most probably, but H8G, but the same issue might be here too because of the defective TCON board. No harm in verifying.

U7980 is H8F indeed

Ah! That's the 2018 model. Oh well, since the manufacturing is new... hopefully...the faulty boards might be the issue. Just check the H9G owner thread, use the examples there and see if you have the same problem or something else.

If it's the same, know that if you have bought from Amazon, you can return it if it's still in the return window.

I liked the 2 of them initially but Techiebeez is basically Rtings to Hindi convertor. To appear credible, she just removes all the measured numbers and only mentions them if its provided by the manufacturer. And look at her reviews of an rtings reviewed TV vs an India only model. The Indian only model reviews of the models always lack depth.
The only time I saw her showing a calibration tool was when she was showing a VU presentation where the VU guy was using a tool to measure peak brightness :D :D

VMone on the other hand is kinda weird. Said in a video that I don't recommend this Samsung because it doesn't have apps and then put a VU or something over it because its android. Like seriously bro? :/ And again, uses very generic terms. He is authentic but he really needs to up his reviewing skills. He reviewed the Toshiba U50 using checkerboard and other demo videos. But didn't explain it well. "This demo video is a great stress test for the TV. As you can see, the black levels and the colors are great on this" Compared to what? And why does it matter to an average viewer?

The only TV reviewer I find good is the Digit guy. He is not using tools but atleast he uses samples from real movies/shows and games to test it out. And uses definite terms to talk about his findings. And its fine because even we are gonna perceive it that way. Too bad that its a corporate job for him since Digit will never allow him to be too real.

As for no one mentioning Toshiba is Hisense, well, it'll be like shooting themselves in the foot. If they mention it, it means they do care about a TV being Chinese and it would alienate these companies from them. No more review units (not just for TV but all products). Also will drive away audiences who have strong political beliefs. Even the best of reviewers have to keep a good relation with the popular brands/audience. Once you put your name and face out there, same rules apply as the real world. Youtubers aren't as independent anymore.

You can only be truly authentic only if you don't want to earn money/fame. And while you are doing it, wear a deadpool mask over your face :p
And before anyone comes at me for liking Quantum TV; I am not saying he is right, I am just saying he is authentic. He'd definitely tell you that Toshiba is Hisense - right at the start of the video if its important to him.
can you suggest any samsung,lg or sony tv(55") equivalent to u7980 but cost less than 80000. sorry if i am asking too much for these brand less than 80000. plz do reply at the earliest i am planning to buy during big billion or great indian sale

Guys where can one buy this tv in Delhi? It seems out of stock on all websites
if you have amazon business account, then it is available in north india as well. So, I guess it will be available for order for normal users as well in sale.

The scene changing transition judder will go away if you turn ultra smooth motion to off. I've discussed this before in the thread.

The flashing issue seems like a hardware fault and is not supposed to happen. Get the TV returned or replaced. It won't be fixed with a software update.

I personally think brands spend too much money on TV speakers. IMO, all TVs should come with either 1W speakers(for debugging) or no speakers at all. They're like integrated graphics in a processor.

My reasoning is that due to design constraints in a TV, the sound will always be compromised. Or it can be the other way around and ruin the design like the stand on LG CX. I was thinking of getting 48" it as a PC monitor but the deep stand will make it hard to keep away even on a 2.5 feet deep desk. Then LG didn't release this in India, so¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also it'll cost significantly more to get the same sound out of a TV. On top of that, we have a really bad import duty and 28% GST on TVs.

So if a TV has ₹10k soundbar worth of sound, it will cost at least ₹15-20k for you. Since at the end of the day the cost will be borne by the consumer.

You did pay the cost of the better speakers in your previous TV, plus the TV speaker extra design cost, import duty and 28% GST. Instead if you paid that same money for a basic speaker/soundbar you'd get much better sound and you could be using with this TV as well since sound equipment can last decades.

Like u7980? You mean with FALD? The closest bet would be 55 samsung q70r...it's retailing around 94k...maybe you could get a good bargain around 83-85k.
Next I'd put the Samsung frame2020, panasonic gx800d(I've heard this is a good one)...and last I'd put sonyx8000h. The last 3 are non-FALD

Thanks Yoman. My consideration is only PQ only not about type even non-FALD is ok. but does these models matching u79?

Since I posted my query regarding viewing angle loss, let me say that I gained a lot of information about it from posts by lightgamer and Marakk. Both of them provided valuable insights (and pics) to back their stance that I was not aware of.

All in all, I benefited from the discussion here as it helped me to understand the technical intricacies of different types of TV panels as well as their advantages/limitations, notwithstanding certain comments that were avoidable.

As we say in Punjabi: Thodi thand pao paaji (cool down a bit) :)
So, finally u r buying it or not?

I do! Would you recommend this TV for gaming? I don't need the lowest possible response times, but it will be primary gaming display for the next year till I replace my 58" Panasonic 1080p TV

if you are planning to play non-fps games, then it should be enough. A high fps game at 60hz will be smoother than low fps game at 60hz. So, if you can provide around 80fps, then I feel gameplay would be fine, because 30fps@240hz is not playable at all.

Rest is depends on your defination of "playable". for me anything less than 100fps, 144hz, VRR, 1440p is not-playable.

I have been using 55U7980 from the past one week. Here are pros and cons

1. Provides OLED like blacks
2. Very bright panel
3 Local dimming is good
4. Quick bootup time

Cons

1. Picture quality is not that great looses details in dark areas and looks blur
2. Upscaling of HD channels are very poor.
3. Picture sharpness is also not great and even the text also appearing blur.(from all source)
4. Viewing angle are bad
5.Colors are not accurate

First I bought TCL C715 which has some pictures quality issue. c715 had warm skin tone issue but can be resolved by choosing PC mode. Anyhow I returned that tv. If I compare with U79 with TCL-C715, both are very good tvs in terms of the picture quality. Due to TCLs 300nits panel its way behind U79 otherwise c715 is best value for money.C715 has better color reproduction and sharpness

If you're only going to buy a TV for gaming, I highly suggest increasing your budget and getting the frame. However if it's for temporary 1 year gaming use with a lot of movies and TV shows till you get a better TV for gaming, it'll be fine.

There are better TVs available even at this price for gaming. So I really won't recommend it for gaming at all.

U7980 is H8F indeed

Now that you mention it, and if it is indeed H8F, this is what Rtings wrote about H8F's viewing angles:

"Unfortunately, this TV has poor viewing angles. In person, the image degrades significantly when viewed even slightly off-axis, and it looks worse than the current score suggests. The image appears washed-out, and colors rapidly lose accuracy. This is also not ideal for use as a PC monitor, as even just sitting close to it the sides of the screen appear non-uniform."

Clearly there's a reason why these guys are among the most reliable source of information.

If the TV has H8G's panel, that's actually worse by a couple of degress in brightness loss but slightly better in other aspects. Can be panel variance too. Overall, still poor as most VA panels would be.

I am just curious to know do you own a u79?
