Vinyl I am listening to...

That is an excellent album Myriad! Good choice...ORG masterings are awesome!

Anyhow, be sure to pick up "The Look Of Love" also ORG remastered. It is slower than Live In Paris, but it is an absolute sound oasis and guilty pleasure :p

Last night, I was listening to:

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me (200g Classic Records)

Thnx Shaizada!
I have "The Look of Love" on cd. I don't go for same album in different format.
Further, new vinyls are very expensive to buy and for me they don't justify their price.

No problem. But I will STRONGLY urge you to reconsider your policy as the CD doesn't even hold a candle to the ORG remaster of The Look Of Love. I mean there is complete resolution that is missing from the CD. I own both and the CD is pretty much trash when compared to sound quality.

I agree, the prices of audiophile vinyl is expensive. But you will have something close to the master tape quality for the rest of your life. It makes it easier to own if you think like that. Especially for music we enjoy and love. :o

'Divorce bringer' strikes again! lol

Oh c'mon! What r u complaining about...you're getting a fantastic set of vinyl coming to you! hehe :p

You should definitely invite friends over once you get that vinyl rig up and running. With some of the vinyl titles you ordered, you're going to blow away a lot of minds!

You should get together with Heliumflight. Sumant would love to hear some of that stuff and we might get him going on a vinyl rig as well for a reasonable cost that he can accommodate. He's a good guy and always willing to learn more.

Shaizada,
Got inspired by your words and ordered Norah Jones "Feels Like Home" with Rhythm House, Mumbai. I have the same album on cd (indian print). Will post my impression after comparing both.

Thats great news Vasu. I'm assuming this is the Classic Records 200g Reissue? That is the one to get. Yes, please do post your thoughts for others to read. That way, I'm not the only one preaching the advantages of the vinyl sound experience ;)

Such a beautiful thing HAS to be shared with others....therein lies the happiness.

Live in India Ghulam Ali Set of 2 Lps

Shaizada,
Got the vinyl of Norah Jones which is a normal pressing. Have been comparing this vinyl to cd for the last couple of days. Though the vinyl is sounding warm with better vocal , what i am missing is detail compare to cd. I tried both Sumiko Pearl & Shure 97xe on my RPM4 TT with varied VTA & VTF but still lower level detail like gliding of fingers on guitar or little brushing of drums is less compare to cd played through my Arcam cd192.

Myriad,

Did you order the $15 or $16 Norah Jones - Come Away With Me vinyl? The Classic vinyl is the one to order and has the best sounding mastering of this album. They recently released it on 45rpm which IS the ultimate version.

If you can play 45 rpm, get that version. I bought the 33.3 version before they ever announced the 45, otherwise I would have gone all 45rpm. Anyhow, the mastering is wayyyyyy better.

Please gift the standard version to a friend or sell it off on the forum and order the Classic Records version. I thought you did buy the Classic Records version, but thats just the one you MUST get.

Finally, what are your chances of getting a decent moving coil cartridge? I think that purchase will go a long way in understanding what Moving Coils can really do. Most of the MM carts I've had experience with, just can't match up the beauty of sound a MC can produce. They don't present the sound as vividly and with the finesse the MCs can do.

If you want, my mother is leaving for India on thursday. If you co-ordinate with me, I can get a cartridge for you with overnight shipping or something and send it with her. Just paypal me the funds or something and we can work it out. That way you don't have to risk shipping to India. PM me if that is something you want to do. Not much time, but if we move fast, can be done.

Myriad, you have ANOTHER problem as well.

Your Project phono box has a capacitance of 120pf. The Shure you have wants to see a capacitance of 250pf.

The higher the capacitive value of the input the duller the sound will be. The lower the capacitance the brighter the sound gets. A mismatch results either in dark dull sound or an overbright, distorted signal.

Reference:
PHONO Cartridge Compliance, Tonearm Mass, System Resonance, Loading of MC and MM Capacitance, RIAA Characteristic

You have an equipment mismatch. Don't know the recommended capacitance of the Sumiko Pearl, but that Project phono isn't the right way to go for these cartridges.

Just buy the Ray Samuels Nighthawk and be done with the whole phono stage thing. It will grow with you as your vinyl setup grows. I'm using it right now and it in NO WAY hinders my vinyl setup which is ORDERS of magnitude more expensive than the Nighthawk itself.

Hello All,

I am listening now listening to,
Al Green - Greatest Hits
Maria Elena - The 50 guitars of Tommy Garrett
S. Balachander - Ragam Thanam Pallavi in Varali Raaga
Raajathi Raaja - Tamil Rajinikanth movie soundtrack - Illayaraja...

which I got from a used lp store recently...!

Project Phono Box SE.
I also have a Lyrita Valve Phono Pre which i am going to connect today. Will post on that later.

Tried Lyrita phonostage with same set up. The vocals turned seductive but the lower level detail dropped in comparison to Project Phono Box SE. The result was same with 6SL7 or ECC82 tubes.
