Vinyl I am listening to...

Myriad,

Did you order the $15 or $16 Norah Jones - Come Away With Me vinyl? The Classic vinyl is the one to order and has the best sounding mastering of this album. They recently released it on 45rpm which IS the ultimate version.

If you can play 45 rpm, get that version. I bought the 33.3 version before they ever announced the 45, otherwise I would have gone all 45rpm. Anyhow, the mastering is wayyyyyy better.

Please gift the standard version to a friend or sell it off on the forum and order the Classic Records version. I thought you did buy the Classic Records version, but thats just the one you MUST get.

Finally, what are your chances of getting a decent moving coil cartridge? I think that purchase will go a long way in understanding what Moving Coils can really do. Most of the MM carts I've had experience with, just can't match up the beauty of sound a MC can produce. They don't present the sound as vividly and with the finesse the MCs can do.

If you want, my mother is leaving for India on thursday. If you co-ordinate with me, I can get a cartridge for you with overnight shipping or something and send it with her. Just paypal me the funds or something and we can work it out. That way you don't have to risk shipping to India. PM me if that is something you want to do. Not much time, but if we move fast, can be done.

Shaizada,
I think i need a better cart to dig out the detail in vinyl. I was suggested AT OC9 MLII by needledoctor.com. But i am apprehensive to go for something which i am not sure of. It may be table or cart or phono pre which is a limiting factor. I need to read to more on this before i jump into any conclusion.

Project Phono Box SE.
I also have a Lyrita Valve Phono Pre which i am going to connect today. Will post on that later.

Hi vasu,
I am also using lyrita pre and shure M97 cartridge. I am sure you will notice a significant improvement with lyrita phono stage. The only issue with tube phone stage is they have little bit of hum issue at higher volumes.
Thanks.

Vasu,

reading more is ALWAYS a good thing. Best to educate yourself and then go from there.
Keep in mind tone arm weight, cartridge weight, cartridge compliance, cartridge specs etc. Then make the best decision.

I was listening to 'Appassionata' - a 45RPM direct to disc recording by RCA of Beethoven piano sonata performed by Ikuya Kamiya, a Japanese pianist, on a Bosendorfer piano. The recording was engineered by the Japanese.

Stunning, absolutely stunning, reproduction of a piano. I have never heard this instrument sounding this close to real on an audio system before. The attack and decay, the dynamics, the tone, the sparkle, the keys hitting the strings, the low notes etc just sooooo real. I have an upright piano at home and have heard grand pianos live on several occassions (though not a bossendorfer). This recording comes within inches of sounding like the real thing. Wish there were more of such recordings. The Japanese really knew their recording engineering damn well. The performance by the pianist was also truly exceptional. A truly great record.

I had played this record on my earlier cardrige (the Goldring Elektra) and it just mistracked horribly given the strong dynamics of the recording. I replaced the cartridge with the Denon 110 and to my amazement, it tracked beautifully as long as the sytlus was clean.

Not yet. The cheapest USPS option usually takes 5-7 weeks. I will wait for one more week before i make a call. I have also ordered 2 records with acoustic sound and they didn't have the cheaper shipping rates. They charged me 42 dollars on a 72 dollar packet.
Elusive disc charges are same as acoustic sound.

These are the latest reissues mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog master tapes. Pressed at Pallas in Germany. And needless to say - on 180-gram virgin vinyl.
