Vinyl I am listening to...

Hi Bhaskarcan

What i was trying to say was that some directors have a say in the recording and mixing of the songs. Raj Kapoor, being one of them. Mera Naam Joker was probably one of the first film soundtracks in electronically processed stereo. RK continued with Bobby. But from Satyam Shivam he went back to mono. In those days many of Laximkant Pyarelal big titles were in stereo. But RK wanted his stuff in mono and got what he wanted. Over the years he may have formed a dislike for stereo and found mono more true to the intent of the song. Henna was actually Raj Kapoors unfinished project which Randhir completed. So that probably explains why its in mono. Please note all this is pure guesswork.

Sorry that I'm taking this off topic again but I remember buying a lot of T-series music cassettes in the 1990s that were in Mono. Not sure if the original recordings were made in Mono or not. One example of this, I recall, is the movie "Guru" with music by Bappi Lahiri.

Digressing it little more further, T-series in the 90s was notorious to sell old soundtracks originally held by the erstwhile HMV on tapes. Another guesswork from my side is that probably HMV did not release those old movies songs on tapes until T-series started selling them illegally by exploiting the loopholes in the 'then' anti-piracy regulations.

However, looks like T series actually had the rights for Guru. I deduce it from here:

The Aandhi LP was very interesting as it had dialogues on it.

Was awake till 4 in the morning, making an important powerpoint presentation so these LPs kept me company.

Hi Reuben, what I noticed that sadly the SQ of Aandhi records(both LP n Ep) are not upto the mark. Even the cassette sounds much better. Somehow the record(and I checked this with more than one records) sound compressed and muddy. What's your observation?

regards,
Bhaskar

Agree 100%, the quality of the pressing was quite sub-standard but it was clear and quite listenable. It sounded like a typical mainstream HMV pressing of the 1970s. The dynamic range was missing and it sounded quite restricted (like the speakers were playing while inside a sealed plastic bag. All the other pressings that I played last night sounded the same. Thought there was something wrong with the rig but when I played a piece from Billy Joel's 52nd Street just to run a check, noticed that the sounds that I am used to, were back. Nevertheless, no complaints against the Bollywood pressings, the sounded loud and clear enough to be enjoyed.

Reuben, good that you have the LP of Aandhi. It is much much better if you compare it to the Aandhi EP. The EP is recorded at 10% faster speed to bed-in the songs within the duration which an EP can offer. This takes away all the listening pleasure since my system does not have a pitch control.

Once, I had the oppotunity to compare the LP & EP on a Technics 1210 MK2 at Prateek's place. The LP was recorded at the correct speed while the EP would play at the correct speed only when the pitch control slider was set to -10%! Other than this, there was no other difference in the sonic quality of the two records.

Ah Reuben! I see you have a very good collection/taste of Hindi records also. :clapping: And I was thinking that it's only Westerns you are interested in. Great going......

Well, not really, i'm more of a western music guy (specifically, the metal genre). However decided to diversify my music tastes and I've been doing a lot of reading on bollywood music. I have some great friends who drop off some Bollywood vinyl once in a while and I indulge in them. Yesterday was once such day when a good friend came by and dropped off some bollywood vinyl for me. The stories behind Bollywood music are well and truly amazing and that's what keeps me interested.

on another note, I dug out an old DVD of Hum Kisse Se Kum Nahi and watched bits and pieces of it last night. That music stand off (competition) between Rishi and Tariq was truly amazing from a OST perspective, courtesy RDB. Have the LP (bought brand new by dad in the late 1970s) and will listen to it over the weekend. One side is in Mono (including this music stand off piece), while the other is in Stereo.

Actually the music competition medley and the title qawwali are on the stereo side. LP has fantastic artwork with Hindi lyrics, pictures from the film etc. Awesome packaging for its time

I think I'm not sure here but let me check. Yes, the LP record cover had some lovely cover art. I'll get some pictures for us. It had a split foldable front which could open like a window to reveal the inside (photos). We have this record in brand new condition. Dad use to keep his records wrapped up (each one) and hence, the covers are still as good as new. I recall him talking about the competition side being in Mono. Let me check.

Actually, there are two versions of the LP. One is more elaborate with lots of cover art with lyrics etc for good publicity (with a split front cover and lyrics+photos once you remove the split cover) and another ordinary one. I have both of them with me.
Both of them have the same LP number PEALP 2005 and were released under the Supreme label.
The front and back are identical.
Only the split front and the lyrics are different in the elaborate one.

Side One is Stereo and has these:-
Chaand Mera Dil - Rafi
Ah Dil Kya Mahfil Hai - Kishore
Tum Kya Jaano - R D Burman
Mil Gaya Humko Saathi - Asha, Kishore, Chorus
Hum Kisise Kum Nahin (Qawwali) - Rafi, Asha, Chorus

Side Two is Mono and has these songs:-
Bachna Ae Haseenon - Kishore, Chorus
Kya Hua Tera Waada - Rafi
Yeh Ladka Haaye Allah - Rafi, Asha
Hum Ko To Yaara Teri Yaari - Kishore, Asha

Great memory. That is indeed the case with this record.:)

Amazingly maintained collection I must say. The cover looks amazingly clean for its age. Must be same for the record, I am sure.

Thanks for the information hildebrand. And you are spot on with the track listing. I have both an LP & an EP of the soundtrack. Looks like a third kind of cover existed too for the lps, which I have. Will post the album art of both the LP & EP for the cause.

Thanks,
Saket
