Vinyl I am listening to...

Souravin, thank you for the information. Luckily I do have the first issue with 'gate fold' album cover of TBT. This recording quality is the finest one among Indian made recordings! Don't know why most of our great Indian musicians missed to have that much of enthusiastic 'fire' to bring or to insist 'the finest' recording quality in their recordings like RDB and SDB? If they all were looked after, then now all our Indian phono records would be in the glory of classic!
Cheers.

Hi Sundar,

Here are the pointers

The Burning Train LP - Excellent recording by EMI considered one of the best balanced recording

The Burning Train SP with title music - little dynamic for ears

The Bullet Train ACD - Very nice compilation as dance number with original tracks in fusion

Here is another vote of appreciation for Shri Souravin's excellent efforts in highlighting RDB vinyl's. I too am motivated to dig out all the RDB disks in my collection and to preserve them in a better way.

My slightly frayed copy of the TBT. Disk is GC but dirty.

I just had a spin and the SQ is still impressive. Tomorrow I will clean it and make a copy in my RTR for everyday listening.

Thanks Aks for your comments. As you have mentioned to transfer LP to RTR, how does that sound? I understand it's an Analogue to Analogue transfer and loss would be minimum, am curious to know.

Sourav

I am sure there is some microscopic loss in details, but overall I like the sound. The NR of the deck probably helps with minor surface noise.

In fact I also copy my CD's to Reel or audio tapes and much prefer that sound.

Unfortunately, I have run out of blank reels and cassettes thus recycling old ones.

I have used a similar approach as I make "best hits" compilations on cassette for playing in the car, when back home. Its a great approach.

Like it or dislike it (some gurus rate the movie and RDB's music as ordinary) but in my opinion, TBT is a cult classic and a movie ahead of its time, in Indian Cinema. Its still quite a thrill to watch and my 8 year old son still watches it on DVD, once in a while. In my opinion, the music is also quite good and the quality of pressing of the LP, makes it sound even better.

Burning Train was a film which started the downfall of the BR banner. It was partly redeemed with Nikaah but the banner never really recovered from the Burning Train losses. Music was also a huge letdown. BR Films seldom got their music wrong. Be it Waqt, Gumraah, Hamraaz, Chotti Si Baat, Naya Daur. Pal do Pal was the only track that created some waves because it resembled the earlier mega qawali hit from Hum Kissise Kum Nahin. In fact even Thande Thande Pani Se from Pati Patni Aur Woh was a bigger hit than any track from Burning Train

Hi Soravin

I have always been meaning to ask you this. You always post pictures of the Lp and ep of a film. In your listening session do you hear both

Good question Prem. Mostly I listen to the LP and post the picture in a group (LP+EP+SP) for reference only. To my knowledge, these are the released set of a particular soundtrack in vinyl format.

However during a listening session of Electronically reprocessed stereo, I listen to the Mono SPs and EPs.

Sourav

Sourav,

Nice that you are posting LP and EP covers of the same movie. It is a supporting information for collectors like me.
EPs are always the treasures, as sometimes you get at least one additional song in them.
Keep doing it. :)

Thank you Anil.

Here are reasons for procuring EPs and SPs

(a) There are few OSTs wherein released track in LP has different musical arrangement in EPs SPs. Example: Kudrat, Samadhi, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar

(b) for Electronically processed stereo LPs, mono version is available in EPs and SPs. Madhosh, Namak Haraam, Manoranjan, Jaise Ko Taisa, Rickshawalla, Yadon Ki Baraat etc.

(c) Additional song in EP and SP- Jalpari in Saagar, Darling Darling etc.

(d) Promo EP - like Bullet, Tinmurti

(e) Only released/ available in EPs and SPs - in that scenario, SPs contain the lengthier version.

(f) Nice cover art

(g) It's a fun listening to 45 rpm version of 33 and 1/3 rpm LPs - The Burning Train SP

(h) for some Bengali puja releases, EPs and SPs (stereo or mono) had released with few songs first, then the compilation LP (mostly in mono) came up much later

Sourav

My ghisa-pita copy of the YKB. This disk has survived millions of spins in all sorts of player we had at our household. We even used to take this to picnics to be abused with portable record players. As souravin ji has mentioned the stereo mix is atrocious. Therefore now I only spin it on an old record player hooked to a Philips tube radio. Sounds perfect !

And here is a very sweet collection of bangla film songs by Lata Mangeshkar

Hi Aks07,

YKB songs also sound sweet on Mono SPs and mono EP.

This is also surprising to see Bengali record you are listening to. However quality wise the mentioned record does not close to average. I will post some bengali LPs and EPs which are great on melody as well as lsitening pleasure. I am hoping language would not be a barrier.

Also please address me as Sourav- no need to add "ji".

Sourav

All titles in this post has LP release except Charitraheen. Dil Se Dil Milne Ka rendered by Lata M and Kishore K is excellent. Unfortunately the song is chopped off in this EP version. For full song you may see the youtube and a recent compilation ACD released on Sony DADC. Quality is good. Teri Meri Yaari by Asha B has a typical rhythm and very hear touching.

Somehow I do not like Heeralal Pannalal songs. There is the only Hemant Kumar track under RDB's music in this movie. But his voice sounds very tiring and constantly chasing the first tempo. This is strictly my opinion.

Sourav
