This is a masterful 1958 recording where the two greats are complemented by other greats such as Tommy Flanagan and Paul Chambers. All of them are very restrained and render very intimate musicianship. A must have LP.

This August marked 40 years of release of the magnum opus in bollywood cinema - Sholay.

The songs, background music and dialogues all received the cult status both in commercial cinema status and in our heart. The music has a rustic feel which justify the story and backdrop. The recording is also a kick start of stereo recording in commercial OST release which is second to Jal Bin Machli Nritya Bin Bijli released in late sixties.

The stereo separation is amazing and there have been different avatars of releases. Here are a few of them.

A sweet coincidence as I too was spinning Van Shipley late last night. Wasn't aware it was his b'day, but just a peaceful way to wind down a Sunday.

Today it is hard to imagine that Van Shipley and Enoch Daniel were superstars on their own. Records shops had stacks of their solo albums. If you peek into an average households music collection, there would be a couple of LPs from these two giants. I think this entire concept of buying filmy instrumentals is over now.
