Vinyl I am listening to...

Today it is hard to imagine that Van Shipley and Enoch Daniel were superstars on their own.

Yes. Kersi Lord, Manohari Singh and a few others can be added to that list. Today they are largely unknown with the rare exceptions like Kalyanji Virji Shah of the Kalyanji Anandji duo. He was Hemant Kumars assistant along with Ravi and they created the famous been tune on an electronic instrument known as the clavioline. Both of them progressed to become music directors.

A book has been published about bolywood orchestra musicians.

Not surprisingly (for me), it is written by a foreigner. It takes an outsider to tell us about the talent among us.

And the Late Sardar Hazara Singh Negi the electric guitarist.

Much of those breezy 60s numbers had his guitar notes. That catchy intro of Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu (Howrah Bridge) and those rocking riffs in Badan Pe Sitare Lapte (Prince), etc.

Thanks for refreshing these memories.

Also the assistant musicians to R.D.Burman the names came to fame as solo musicians are Pandit Hariprasad Chowrasia, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Louis Banks (keyboard and Jazz specialist in India), Uttam Singh (Violin), Late Charanjeet Singh (Guitar, Clavioline and others), Sunil Sharma (Guitar), Late Manohari Singh (Sax), Kishore Sodha (Trumpet), Late Zarin Daruwala (Sarod) to name a few.

They are masters in their own domain later on.

Thanks,
Sourav

A couple of years ago in one of those TV singing shows ( I think India Idol) Asha Bhosle was the chief guest. She had brought along with what remained of the RDB Orchestra.

It was heart warming to watch these oldies, one was on wheel chair, bring the house down with their rendition of Hum Kisise Kum Naheen*intro song. Absolutely mind blowing evening.

Bhai,
Pinjra (The cage) is an all time classic Marathi commercial Movie directed by V. Shantaram about tragic tale of righteousness. Acting by Dr. Shreeram Lagoo is top notch. Other Classical movies are Samna (The Dual) and Sinhasan (The Throne) by Dr. Jabbar Patel. All my favorite. :)
Best Regards.

Respected Hiten Bhai
Good to have your comments.
Pinjra was a huge commercial hit as well. I have watched Navrang, Jal bin machli, Pinjra in theatre. These are good movies but IMHO have an element of corniness. A bit like Jatra that we have in eastern India.

Jal bin Machili recording is good (not exceptional) but Pinjra is thin. At least with the copies that I have. Both of these are first pressings and were bought when the movies were released.

Meawnhiel, Jannmasthmi is here and we are listening to this. A live double pressing. Performed at ISKON Bombay and excellently recorded by Daman Sood.

Somewhat I agree with you. Most movies are cliched. With song and dance sequence and melodrama etc. But essence of the story of 'Pinjra' was good.
Regards.
