Vinyl I am listening to...

Very interesting aks07. First time seeing a lp in Oriya. Thanks for posting. Is there a lot of Oriya music on vinyl? Is it mainly devotional?

Yes they had, and continue to have, a thriving recording industry covering all genre of music.

The most prolific Odiya singer/composer/lyricist was Late Akshoy Mohanty and he continues to enjoy a demigod status. He was much ahead of his time and sort of RD Burman/Kishore Kumar/Jawed Akhtar rolled into one. You can find his work in youtube.

Most importantly Im yet to come across a badly recorded/pressed Odiya LP. Almost all of them were recorded in Cuttack and the mastering/balancing is top notch.

Wow. Any particular lp or Lps you would recommend for a person never been exposed to Oriya music.

Difficult to recommend just one. But any of Akshya Mohanty non filmy Adhunik geet LPs between the 1970 - 79 captures the maestro in his peak. During this period he adopted minimum instrumentations often comprising just Bass/Rhythm guitars, drum/percussion and harmonica. His LPs from this era are very expensive.

He often adapted from western artists of the day. His version of Harry Belafonte - There's a Hole in the Bucket (Mathia Re Gote Kana) and Peter Paul & Mary - Puff The Magic Dragon (Chandramalli Hase) is absolutely charming !

Thanks Ashoke for sharing these LP details. I have heard two Oriya OSTs. Maa and Badshah (music by R.D.Burman). As being a bengali, we more or less understand the language- there are resemblance.

Another noticeable thing is that the LPs are in stereo. I know someone called Debasis Mohanty who has a studio in Bhubneswar - Pancham Studios. Many of the excellent sounding RDB compilations are remastered in his studio. for example "Tumse Milke" ACD.

One more combination of Pancham Da, Kishore Da and Shakti Da... superb recording..

Jaiyo na Jaiyo na door..
Kaunse Dariya..

and special treat .. O Manjhi re Teri Nayya.. sung by RD himself. Quite resembling to SD's songs in 60s and 70s

Listened Bangla version of the songs in late 80s when I was in Calcutta and those were also equally beautiful.:clapping:

O Majhi Teri Naiya Se is an excellent track by RDB himself. It gives you a visual imaging of boatman plying on river through the song itself. Pure Bhatiali tune...

Listening 'Salil chowdhari's compilation lp. Beautiful songs. Particularly 'Baug mein Kali khili' song.

When I was a teenager I had listened to an orchestra of film songs in TN.
One Malayalam song struck me and stayed in my mind. The orchestra was so good and that particular song's rhythm, depth gave unexplained feelings to my heart. Even though i didn't know the language I liked that song very much, still one of my fav. Here is that song.

A famous song of this compilation lp is "Baug Mein Kali Khili " sung by Asha Bhosle .Salil Chowdhari adopted the same tune in a song in the National award winning 1966 Malayalam movie"Chemmeen" in one of the more popular songs "Chakara kadapurathini ulsavamani chakara"
