Hi I'm planning to buy Yamaha YHT -196.. But i came to know that it has no feature to play Dolby HD or DTS HD.... Even though, i can play it through a BD player, will there be any real difference between Dolby HD and Dolby when i hear them? Because am so confused to take it as am missing a feature. Am I going to miss any real feature if i buy 196?

only drawback of 196 is this - not HD sound.
i.e., HD sound can't play through HDMI.
You can hear HD audio simply by connecting optical cable with BDP or any mediaplayer that can decode HD audio.
from DTH also you need additional connection optical cable.
- connect tv and DTH STB through HDMI and STB to AVR by optical.

other +
- can connect additional active sub.
(onkyo 3400/3500 and pioneer ht071 has only passive sub).

so go for it. what's the price quoted?
I'm also thinking to buy in this week (some DIWALI offers)
- I got an offer just below 23K from RelianceDigital

Yeah i know that... I can play it thru a BD player connecting by an optical cable.. But still HD will be decoded and it will be played as normal Dolby instead of Dolby TrueHD... So am I missing something special here in this case? I mean will TrueHD will be so good than the normal one? Is it worth sacrificing TrueHD ? or TrueHD is something shouldn't be sacrificed?

Dolby Digital (also known as AC-3) is a lossy audio compression format. It supports channel configurations from mono up to six discrete channels
Dolby TrueHD: Dolby's current lossless coding technology. It offers bit-for-bit sound reproduction identical to the studio master. Over seven full-range 24-bit/96 kHz discrete channels are supported (plus a LFE channel, making it 7.1 surround) along with the HDMI interface. Theoretically, Dolby TrueHD can support more channels, but this number has been limited to 8 for HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Point must be in mind
- This is an HTiB
- This is yamaha's cheapest HT setup.

So, if your are missing something special here in this case.... nothing to say.
yamaha 196- best low end... that is all.

While there is difference between HD and normal DTS/Dloby, not many can distinguish the difference. You will need a good speaker system to feel the difference. I have tried both DTS and DTS-HD on my system, but could not hear any marked difference.

As rightly pointed out by other FMs , its difficult to actually figure out the difference between True HD and Dolby 5.1. I own a Yamaha YHT 196 and so far its gr8. While playing downloaded movies (mkv , avi) with AC3 5.1 format you will be more than happy with the performance that Yamaha delivers considering that its the cheapest HtiB available.

Also can somebody advise what will the approx power output per channel(with all channels driven) for the Yamaha YHT 196 amp. The ratings as per the datasheet are

100W/channel @ 6ohm , 1KHz , .9% THD with 1 channel driven
80W/channel @6 ohm , 1KHz , .9% THD with 2 channels driven

Thanks guys.. It really helped.. I just ordered 196 by this evening with a BD player from Reliance digital. And I took it with an extended 2 years warranty that cost me Rs.3909... Does it worth? I mean, Is it really worth taking yamaha with an extended warranty at this price? Did I waste the money?

sorry, i think it is. may not be a waste as u have extra 2 year security. but not necessary i think. because who knows in a year you may want to upgrade the package to something better. Extended warranty option is necessary for TV/Laptop as they are expected to be with us for atleast 4-5years.

Dear all,

I bought the Yamaha YHT 196 few days back from RD and got it installed yesterday. My doubt is:
I'm aware that the Yamaha 196 cant decode the Dolby Hd audio, so i bought a Samsung F5500 BDP (so that it can decode the HD audio) along with it. When i played Avatar/Conjuring(Blue ray CD with Hd audio) the receiver gets only 2.1 stereo..i.e when i have set the option to straight in the receiver it indicates only Front two speakers and sub are in use. When i got to check the spec of my BDP, i saw that the Audio Decoding Output is only 2ch.
So cant my BDP send 5.1 to my receiver? I'm very confused. I have no idea in Home theaters so kindly excuse me if my question is lame.

I have connected my BDP to receiver via HDMI. Should i connect it with a coaxial digital output to receive the 5.1?

Kindly help me out.

A lot depends on the movie too. DTS-HD MA rocks on some of the newer movies like Star Trek Into Darkness, The Last Stand, Dredd, etc. Definitely an improvement over DTS.

Both HDMI and Coaxial are capable of carrying 5.1 channel audio.....so both of them should work. Just check the settings on your av reciever

Sadly, your BDP can decode HD audio but can only send it to AVR/Speaker in 2.1 mode, meaning it down converts it to 2.1, not 5.1. So you have to rely on AVR to decode it.

There should be an option in your BDP to bitstream (send the signal as it is, without decoding > to AVR, so that AVR will decode it)

connect BDP to TV with HDMI
and
BDP to receiver with optical or coaxial.

No DTS/DOlby HD means can't decode input HD audio signals through HDMI.
but through optical cable BDP sends decoded signals.

so need additional optical/coaxial cable to get dts sound.

Thanks for the reply guruji.

Sadly my Yamaha yht 196 HT cant decode dolby hd & dts hd. When i change the setting in the BDP audio menu to bit stream the receiver still receives only 2.1. I manually go and change it to cinema dsp mode. I think i have made a wrong choice of buying yamaha 196.

Dear Mr.Suppu,

Thanks for your reply. So you say that the coaxial cable can transmit 5.1 audio from my bdp to AV?. I am confused because my BDP audio decode output is 2ch.

In the above reply from Mr.Guruji - he states that my BDP cant send 5.1 signals.
And in a reply from Manindra - he states that the HDMI & coaxial cable can send 5.1. there is no difference in it. I'm very confused now. Kindly help me out.

oh, sorry to hear that. actually i have a s380 sony bdp and logitech z906 multimedia speaker which is also not capable of decoding HD Audio. But still i have set in BDP to bitstream and the speaker system can decode the dobly truhd and dts hdma but not as good as dolby 5.1 or DTS.

I think you can solve the problem by buying another BDP which can decode and downconvert HD audio to normal dolbly/dts 5.1 and send via optical/coaxical cable to avr.

Well i'm planning to sell my 3 days old Yamaha 196 for 20k in a 3.5k loss for me. To invest a 10k more in BDP i might as well sell this Yamaha 196 and buy a Onkyo 3500. Does this sound good? I feel that i have wasted my money in buying this HT:indifferent14:

What kind of media did you play? Blu-Ray disk? DVD disk? or downloaded content? Are you sure the movies have 5.1 audio?

folks... here is a mis-interpretation of information and the whole thread is going wrong...

1st thing... DTS/DD are 5.1 format however not similar to DTS-HD/DOLBY - true HD..

2nd thing.. DTS will work over digital optical cable and DD will work over Digital CO-axial as well however neither optical nor co-ax will support HD audio as they do not have the badnwidth of it and hence will work only over HDMI..

now if you guys have HDMI input in your AVR connect it .. but as it does not decode HD audio you will get no sound or best just 2 channel as any hardware if not capable will downmix it it 2 channel... front left and front right...

other option is if you guys have proper 5.1 channel output on your BDP use that and connect that to the HTib only then you will have 5 channel audio however your BDP should be capable of decoding HD audio + multichannel analogue out...

i dont think the BDP will downmix to dts/dd from dtshd/dolby hd.. downmix will be set to 2 channel only...

so only way you guys are left with is to get BD's with only DTS audio / downloaded content with DTS audio and connect BDP to avr with optical cable and let the HDMI go to TV...

only way is to get a BDP that has 5.1/7.1 analogue out and use analog input to your AVR..

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
