Yamaha YHT-196 - Missing Features - Suggestions please

Ironhorse:

I have the following components:
1. Yamaha YHT 196 - doesn't decode DTS HD/ Dolby True HD
2. Samsung BDP F5500 - Can decode DTS HD / Dolby True HD ... but the spec says "Audio Decode is 2ch"

I played Avatar blue ray disk which has Dolby True HD audio content. But my BDP transmitted only 2ch to AV..ie my AV showed that only left & right speakers are in use.

The above was my question in the thread. So you say that there are no possibilities that I can get DD HD 5.1 audio signals to my AV until unless I get a new BDP which has audio decode output as 5.1?

And i have learnt that DTS/DD can be attained through coaxial and HD audio through HDMI. I am I rite?

Kindly clarify. Thanks in advance.

Coaxial and Optical supports DTS/DD but not HD. For HD you need HDMI. If your player says audio is downmixed to 2 channel then there is no way to get true 5.1. Have you checked the bdp audio setting for an option like LPCM?

Also check the blu-ray disk audio settings. Most disks have multiple audio tracks.

please dont sell the yama 196
enjoy it.
there is no way one can tell the diff.
whetehr hd audio or normal DD/DTS playing with this system..

so let your avr decode...no problem if it downscales hd audio into normal DD/dts..

belive me..
i am using an avr just like yours entry level..and its impossible to differentiate sound when i play blu ray disk or standard dvd
so dont be upset and re plan..just enjoy

you may sell the bdp and get one who can decode and send 6 ch or 8 ch LPCM..
this present one seems downscaling into stereo when decoding
although i dont see any need..if your avr decodes into normal DD/dts..

hd video vs sd video...case is no way similar with dlby tru hd/dts hd ma audio vs dd/dts audio
former one is very easy to differentiate and later one is only possible with a very expensive overall(room also)..system

Yes, I also think it may have been misinterpreted.

But I do think some BDP can downmix and send 5.1 to AVR. Pls check this from Samsung and Compare it with lower end models.

But Prabhakaran note baijuxavior comment that
5.1 (dolby/dts) digital sound can only travel through optical/coaxcical (single cable) and HDMI Cable.

Dolby TRUHD/ DTS HDMA can only travel through HDMI

I think you should post some picture of your BDP audio setting. So we can know have u done any mistake in the setting...

Pls see mine.
Here is an option whether to output Dolby Digital/DTS(Normal&HD) (from Coaxical Digital Ouptut port) as it is or DOWNMIX

Here is an option further what to do when downmix - Stereo or Surround (whichever u select it is not true dolby dts sound)

YES

IT cannot. even if it can there is no analogue out so all they mean is it can
bitstream HD audio/passthrough to another hardware ( avr ) will will decode audio

YES.. as it cannot decode .. somewhere hanging in between true decoding and not decoding in between is downmix. as atleast you will get 2 channel audio instead of no audio at all..

check menu and set output to DTS/DOLBY and see if the player converts DTS-HD/DOLBY HD to DTS.. if it works.. you are good.. give a grinny smile :)

YES.. so as i mentioned before.. play only movies with DTS/DOLBY and take output through optical and connect your AVR .. you will get proper 5.1

before that make sure you have swept each and every option in BDP for audio. try setting to DTS etc .. as mentioned .

Kindly clarify. Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot to everyone for replying to my queries.

Last night I tweaked few settings in my BDP. Now all the Dolby True HD & DTS HD formats are converted to DD & DTS respectively. I haven't used coaxial, BDP is connected to AVR through HDMI only. Please find below the screenshots of the BDP settings and the AVR one.

But this means still he is not getting dts truehd right? I am thinking of buying same set so is it major issue to avoid yht 196. My other option is pioneer htp 071and onkyo 3400 but I dont like 3400 its too bass and the place from where I can get pioneer dont have demo

Guys, I got it delivered at my home... But am not satisfied with the bass in 196... I want it more tight... and i played it for 2 hrs and it got heat unbelievably.. Am thinking of returning and get Sony.. Though i hate sony but that bass making me to think.. Feels like took a bad decision and wasted money...

any avr needs good ventlation..not fault of avr geetting hot..your placement is culprit..
can try 12v diyed cooling..easy..

never ever think of replcing with sony..biggest fault you are going to do..

later buy a separate sub..

You can get some more bass through configuring the individual speaker volume and frequency in the setup.
Change audio mode - 5ch enhancer, 5ch stereo etc.

Is yamaha guys came to you house for fitting?
say them to setup the set correctly as your hearing choice.

For sub placement has the most impact. Place it in a corner with walls on 2 sides of the sub... it will start to boom. Just place it in different locations and play with it... you will find the bass improves or disappears based on the location and the surrounding objects.

Coming to the heat... provide lots of ventilation for the AVR. Better place it on an open table and not in a rack... or make sure rack has plenty of breathing space. Also, AVRs tend to get hot... my Onkyo runs for hours daily and gets hot but never any issues with the heat (other than needing fan or AC in the summers). The AVR itself works wonderfully despite the heat it generates.

Finally, stay away from Sony or any system that does not come with a separate AVR. Your Yamaha is a good purchase... just move the sub around and you will get the sound/bass right.

diffrence between dts-dtshd wont be much unless you go for physical 7.1 setup to enjoy.. for 5.1 it will be little difference. rest your choice. you can go with avr + seperates for that however keep 10k+ extra to have it right out of the box.

what you call bass is not bass in true sense but bloated low frequency. i understand as per our general usage and availability of product goes we have become more familiar to that doom doom.. with time you will realize that wont like that unwanted crap anymore.

for avr getting hot is normal. you can add 2 120mm pc fans to run via local smps box and it will keep it cool else keep in good ventilation area. something that is converting electricity and amplifying will generate heat.

basic law of physics. one matter to another some enery is wasted as heat.
either diy cooling else good ventilation. and some amps or avrs which pump more power will run even hotter thats why heat sink is used to dissipate heat.

getting sony will be the biggest mistake you'll ever make. those are consumer gradr HTib's and not built for quality but for regular usage and jazzy features will looks good.

if you can extend your budget by another 10-15k

go for pioneer vsx 323 and rs32 speaker package for 32k else rs33 for 37k rs33( has 2 front towers and better sub )

can you suggest a 5.1 septate setup for same budget which will perform better. i am thinking of finalizing on 196

if you already have planned to replace the speakers why buy it..bad plan:o

get a enry level just avr and a pair of bs speakers..
example denon 25k range..polk 15k range...
and enjoy

buy rest later..slowly..

if you plan to change the speakers why waste money now... for the same money get an avr for now and add 2 yamaha towers and a centre speaker. the FS will make up to some level for the sub .

once you have money go for surrounds and sub.

dont spend on something you wont use in near future.. thats bad capital investment. be wise..

Dont get me wrong.i am not going to upgrade the system I will get for atleast 4 years. I just want the best for my money now.
