Yamaha YHT-196 - Missing Features - Suggestions please

for the price 196 will suffice for new few years am sure.. if you can extend your budget
then go for oipneer vsx 323 minimu as it supports 4k passthrough and all other technical stuff to work on HD audio and pioneer rs32 speaker package.. total will be close to 32-33k if you can extend a bit more same avr+ rs33.. front towers and better sub ..

I don't know exactly this is the solution...but i'm having the same samsung BDP with Denon DHT X500... some files are been played similar for me too... But some original files have been played in 5.1 when you press the AUDIO button on your remote it displays the language ...you need to select 5.1 version on this by scrolling (it will appear only if it is available on the file -disc).By doing so my AVR displays MULTI CHANNEL IN and the sound quality will be superb compared to the other..
Check it out ..if this was ur case..

Ironhorse:

I have the following components:
1. Yamaha YHT 196 - doesn't decode DTS HD/ Dolby True HD
2. Samsung BDP F5500 - Can decode DTS HD / Dolby True HD ... but the spec says "Audio Decode is 2ch"

I played Avatar blue ray disk which has Dolby True HD audio content. But my BDP transmitted only 2ch to AV..ie my AV showed that only left & right speakers are in use.

The above was my question in the thread. So you say that there are no possibilities that I can get DD HD 5.1 audio signals to my AV until unless I get a new BDP which has audio decode output as 5.1?

And i have learnt that DTS/DD can be attained through coaxial and HD audio through HDMI. I am I rite?

Kindly clarify. Thanks in advance.

One factor thats holding me back from going for YHT196 is the missing RC Video component inputs and probably the missing USB port. But of all the budget HTs I reviewed, Yamaha shounds the best.

At the given budget , Yamaha YHT196 is absolute VFM. Considering that its an entry level receiver , it has 2 optical , 2 coaxial ports , 3HDMI, 1 Pre out for Sub. Delivers around 40W/channel output (with all channel driven) and gives you an option of upgrading speakers, adding an active sub in future.

Actually I changed my order from yamaha to onkeyo. Rd people said they got last piece and it will take a week. I know feature wise yamaha is behind onkeyo due to its dts hd thing. I need your opinion. I like onkyo in movie scene and yamaha in music. But thats just my opinion. The guy from soundtech told to get onkyo but I am am little worried as onkyo is old model.

I agree on the VFM part.
I have a question on the speaker upgrade part and its sort of a newbie question. Will this unit be able to drive FS speakers? The guy at reliance digital who demoed this to me connected the F150 series to this.

pioneer , denon is just avr and you will need to buy speakers seperrately.

please suggest your budget to get correct advise.

My opinion is Compared to Pioneer & Yamaha YHT 196 ,Denon X500 is having more features & it is 140W per channel upgradable upto 165 W per channel..and hope you can get it in price range 40-42K (self is having this HT).

Otherwise you can check yamaha YHT 299 which also having more features including 4K pass through inthe price range of 37~38K ,I have auditioned it was good .. or You can try Onkyo HTS 3500 (price range 30~33K).

No idea about JBL..

Importatnt point..Before buying any HT system have a audition of the same and select it according to your taste and requirement..

GoodLuck on your purchase..:signthankspin:

Hello all,

I am trying to self assemble a smart TV.

I need few inputs for doing so from this amazing community.

ill explain my setup.

1) I have already purchased AOC 27 Inch IPS monitor having 2 HDMI inputs and inbuilt speakers which are very bleak.(reason for going for AVR)
aoc 27inch ips monitor
2) YAMAHA 196 AVR for alternate sound as monitor speakers are too weak.
3) an android set top box running android 4.2 with quad core cpu that has an hdmi out and also optical cable out.
alternate one
alternate two
alternate three
(If some suggestions can be given in choosing these alternates that would be helpful too.)

I will give input from the TATA SKY stb to avr + android STB to avr and connect TV to AVR through hdmi cable using YAMAHA's HDMI out.(This should definitely work right? any issues i could be involved into?)

as i dont plan to buy or use BDs discs , so the issue being discussed in this thread seems irrelevant in my case as the TATA sky stb will obviously do the job of decoding all the hd channels audio and send through the HDMI,(also i dont expect any of the HD channels to broadcast DD HD or DD THD), so i am covered in that part.(right?)

Apart from that, android stb with MXplayer will decode all the audio and send it to avr so i am covered in that part aswell.. i am not sure if mxplayer now supports DD HD or THD decoding , or if say in future if it does support it, i think ill be covered in that case as well as all the decoding will be done either by MXPlayer software (in s/w or h/w mode).
(which port on android stb would give best sound? HDMI or Optical Audio out available in one of the android stb i just reffered)

I am verymuch sure the content i am interested in (which exclude dvd/bd playback) will work in my current setup..
Can the community here help me in finalizing if this setup is going to work for sure for the usecases that i have mentioned here.

I will be greatefull for this help just before i go for this yamaha purchase along with the android stb.

Thanks all. :)

Hi all,

I am trying to assemble a smart TV.
Ill explain my setup.

1) ive purchased AOC 27 incl ips monitor having two hdmi inputs.
2) Yamaha yht 196 avr as the monitor has speakers that are very weak.
3) An android set top box from the following alternatives:
one
two
three
can anyone suggest one from the above?

My content of interest that i intend to use this setup for:
1) TATA sky channels
2) ANdroid set top box to play all kinds of my local or internet movies/music/youtube videos etc.

So the issues regarding DD HD/THD being disucssed here are irrelevant to me as i dont intend to play BDs discs which has the audio content in question. And tata sky stb is supposed to decode all the audio on its own and send it through the hdmi which is already working through my inbuilt AOC monitor speakers though sound is too weak.(am I correct in this assumption?)

Secondly, android stb is also supposed to play hd content and decode the dts audio using MXplayer using either s/w or h/w which can be supposed to work in similar way as it does work on my nexus 4 or tablet.(right?)

How i intend to connect all this:
1)TATA sky stb > AVR (HDMI)
2)Android stb > AVR (HDMI)
3) AVR > AOC monitor HDMI (using AVR HDMI out ARC)

Can anyone suggest me how setup looks? is it going to work or am i going to end up in some glitches in this setup?

Thanks for helping.

It will work. You may need to keep the avr ON all the time though. Decoding will be done by the avr.

Thanks guys.. It really helped.. I just ordered 196 by this evening with a BD player from Reliance digital. And I took it with an extended 2 years warranty that cost me Rs.3909... Does it worth? I mean, Is it really worth taking yamaha with an extended warranty at this price? Did I waste the money?

Hi...
I am thinking of buying this avr. The only place i can see the listing for this avr is at infibeam and snapdeal.. but they dont talk about extended warranty.
How did you get the extended warranty on your purchase?

I am in delhi region.. from where and how did you purchase this?

My main concern is the extended warranty on this.. as this has all the features that i would ever be wanting.. so please share some info about your purchase and warranty.

Thanks so much.

I have YHT196 and just in case anybody can still pick one up I can confirm that that it will decode DTS-HD MA down to DTS. I'm outputting from my PC via the SPIDIf (optical) and when I bitsteam (let the Yamaha do the decoding) files I play with DTS-HD audio play as DTS.

The newer YHT199 will do DTS-HD.

I have a query here...

Can I hook up this setup to my PC via SPDif cable ( I am also planning to buy good sound card if that make sense) ? If yes then will i get 5.1 sound when i play HD downloaded movies with 5.1 channel sound??

My samsung LED also has an option to play HD movies when I connect via USB. Will I be able to get the true HD sound? how to achieve that?

I am planning to buy an entry level HT and my requirement is to play HD downloaded movies..

Please suggest

you can go for the updated yamaha yht 299 and connect via HDMI it would work like a charm. SPDIF can only handle 1500kbps audio (DTS)

DTS HD MA has much higher bit rate for both a/v goes upto 4000 - 5000

that's y they have high speed rated HDMI cables buy any good belkin cable

as for yht 196 it don't support DTS HD MA as its an older entry level htib

yht 299 could be bargained for around 35k if ur planning to upgrade

if DTS works fine for you then you can just follow previous post for spdif cable best option
