Congratulations. Please look the address paper pasted on the envelop and check whether the items are marked as gift or merchandise.

In my case the package was marked as merchandise. Anyway it all depends your luck. which are the new arrivals?

From my experience CD's and DVD's and are let off without duty if marked as gifts. But bluray discs are marked as Optical Drive on the Amazon customs declaration slip on the package and charged duty whether marked as gift or merchandise.

The last time I ordered 5 items, 4 cd's and 1 BD. They were shipped in two consignments with the BD and 2 cd's in the second consignment. When I received the second consignment the value of the contents given on the Amazon slip was the FULL VALUE OF THE ENTIRE ORDER. and I got charged duty for it.
Regards

Can we request amazon to mark the items as CD/DVD instead of optical media (what is the difference?), if they are exempted from duty?

If you mark it as optical media, there is very high chances that your postman will not understand what the content is, and it may reach you safely.

Even if Amazon launches an India site, they will not be able to sell imported DVDs/BDs. They will be restricted to Indian editions, by law. But they might be cheaper.

I have the Lacie make HDD 750GB Purchased from Italy about 4 years ago, not satisfied with the quality, IMHO better go for WD or Seagate that are better in quality and cheaper in India.

Maybe Amazon could also launch another site like the Global Ebay for purchase of items from their UK/US sites.....(in Indian Rs.)

Interesting indeed. Last 8 shipments (all bluray) (gift or not) have always been delivered to me without customs or any other charges. I usually make sure not to cross 35 pounds per order.

Hmmm for the 35+ packages I received from Amazon UK - only 5 times I had to pay customs duty.

Once i got three packages on a single day with only one [with the least price] slapped with customs duty :D

Seems all depends on your luck and the customs personnel who examines the item. :indifferent14:
