Aramex Shop & Ship - Get anything from US/UK Toooooo much cheaper than Borderlinx

On the official website of the Customs, in the "Customs Tariff 2011-12" page, Chapter 85 (warning: PDF document) seems to deal with Electronic Goods.

The PDF document that opens when we click "Chapter 85" contains descriptions of HiFi gear and IT gear. For things such as "Audio Compact disc player", the duty mentioned is only 10%. And things such as "Modems" and "Routers" are mentioned to be free of duty.

I'm sure I'm missing something here, as I have been under the impression that IT gear such as routers are charged 15% duty, and nearly every kind of Hifi gear gets hit with a duty between 25% and 30%. Where am I going wrong?

I'm asking, as I'm planning to get a DAC from the UK (I plan to buy it online and ship it in through Aramex), and I'm wondering if it should be marked as a "Computer Accessory" or something that falls under "Electronics" -- depending on the duty.

I'd be grateful for inputs :)

^^ I did a bit more reading around and figured it out.

The more I read about the customs procedure connected to stuff shipped in, the more uncomfortable I'm getting :(

customs duty might be 10% but there are other levies (excise duty, BCD, CVD etc). when u add all those up, it comes to about 25% of the value of the item & that is what we have to pay

I think someone else also asked the seller to send the dac in the box of the wireless version of the dac so that it passes off as a router or something. You can try that as well if the seller is willing to do something of that sort. You can try to label it as a computer accessory, but the customs guys might still bin it under electronics. No easy way out. You'll have to take your chances.

I read last week that excise duty is only to be levied on goods manufactured in India. Yet I have been billed excise on all imports so far.

How come?

Yup, I'd read that. It was very convenient since the name on the device matched the name on the box. Unfortunately in my case, it may not work.

Strictly speaking they are computer accessories, in the sense they are to be used with a computer, and they do have a USB-in port.

Having a tough time deciding on what route to use :(

This is convenient for the items which were labelled as "Not for export shipping" except bluray DVD's/books.. Now Amazon is shipping Bluray players also to India and shipping is only $20+...anybody aware of this...:)

aiyyo!! Oppo too?
Will there be any responsibility if it is not received, lost in transmission?
Share some links please.
PS: I know they were shipping receivers etc too, but didnt know at $20!

PPS: I tried with oppo - but it is not showing me the shipping cost unless I add card info.

Yes after entering the card number only it will show the final page with shipping price.

I am sure the shipping cost i tried for an normal Panasonic bluray player(hopefully for irrespective any brand) it showed be $20 + deposit for customs value(which is refundable on paying of the customs fee from your end to the delivered agent-DHL or UPS or USPS( 8 to 16 days shipping)

I tried now for Oppo-93 and shipping cost showing as $58.xx by expediting shipping and by priority shipping(2 to 4 days) as $137.xx

Tried Panasonic DMP-BDT210 and the shipping cost by expedited shipping is $22.75 and by priority $51

With the shown price nobody can match this..Damn cheap..

hey guys,
I have registered on shopandship. now when i register on ebay.com, it asks pf a US add, which I have given as the add given to me by shopandship. Now when i give them the phone number, they say that they will give me a 4 digit code which i will be required to put for authentication. i am not able to figureout how do i do that??

Register on ebay.in. You'll still have to go through the authentication process, but the message will come to your indian no. at least. You can buy from ebay.com with your .in account. The registered no. and the no. used along with the shipping address can be different.

Received my first shipment from ebay.co.uk using Aramex Shop and Ship today. The package landed in Chennai on the 3rd day and delivery attempted on 4th day. Completely satisfied with the service this time:)

Hii guys thanks to this thread, i am about to empty my wallet by around 45k. since a long time i was thinking of ordering a hometheater projector from US but was not getting anyone who could have brought it ti India for me. After reading this thread I decided to go the shopandship way. I got someone selling a first class refurbished optoma hd 20 for 699 canadian dollars. 24 canadian dollars to ship it to US add of shipandshop. I had asked the retailer to mark the item as NEW snd declare the cost as 350 canadian dolls. I purchased the projector on 15th and the latest update which shows on canada post is that it has been accepted for shipping. Till now have been charges Rs.342** from my sbi credit card. I want to know how much more will I have to pay more till it reaches home?? I am expecting 10k more....what the experts say??

The projector is available(new) on global ebay for a price of 69k to 72k. considering this my deal is a steal.

I had made use of the Aramex Shop & Ship service to have a Rega DAC that I bought from the UK delivered to me.

My experience was, well, a mixed bag.

The seller I bought the DAC from had an offer, under which a free Chord Codac Digital cable (41.50GBP on Amazon.co.uk) was being bundled with the DAC. I paid for the DAC on 11-08-2011. The seller was good enough to double-box the original package very very well, with the outer box being about 20% bigger than the original box, with lots and lots of padding. He shipped the DAC to Aramex UK, and it was received there on 15-08-2011.

Aramex took over things from there like a very well-oiled machine, and I took delivery of the box on 19-08-2011 at the Aramex office in my city. I was thrilled with the speed at which it got here!

However, the box only contained the DAC. The cable was not in the outer box, or the inner box. Both boxes had been opened before I took delivery, presumably for customs inspection.

An issue was raised with Ms. Anuradha Iyer of Aramex, with details. I confirmed separately with the seller that the cable had indeed been sent. Ms. Iyer had been very prompt and clear with her responses to all queries before the purchase was made, and she responded immediately to the issue raised after I took delivery too. She said she would investigate.

She later requested for a snap of the original box which was taken delivery of, and for the box, packing materials and the DAC itself to be taken to the Aramex office to be weighed. This was a reasonable request, which I could unfortunately not comply with, as the packing buffer (thermocol, bubble-wrap, cardboard wedges etc) and the original outer box had been discarded by then. I only had the DAC's product box with me. This information was conveyed to Ms. Iyer by email on 22-08-2011. She is yet to respond.

I'm not really sure if she will get back on this any more, and I don't want to bother with following this up. I don't know who screwed me -- the seller, the customs officials, or Aramex -- so it is not fair to point fingers at anyone.

In any case, I will not be using the services of the seller of the DAC, or Aramex any more. I will not be able to avoid the customs for international purchases, so I will try and limit myself to minimum exposure with them. I have made at least 18-20 international online purchases over the last year. This was my most expensive international purchase so far, and the first with Aramex, and unfortunately this was the first one I've had a bad experience with. I'm however happy that it was the cable that went missing, and not the DAC :ohyeah:

I'd held off from writing the full experience here till now (I got delivery of the item on 19-08-2011) in order to give Aramex a reasonable time to get back after my last communication. I'm not blaming Aramex here -- I really don't know which of the 4 parties involved (myself being the fourth party) I should blame.

Anyway, the Rega DAC is a kickass DAC and I love it! No regrets on the purchase. :)

Thanks for reading, if you got this far :D
