Brought home Panasonic 42X20D

Yesterday got a call from the dealer, informing me about the gift from Panasonic. I was surprised at their honesty as I bought the TV 2 weeks back and was not aware about the gift.

Its a Benetton watch and glasses. Both have 1 year warranty card with them. So I guess this must be an original merchandise. The quality is descent and I dont have anything to complain, specially after getting it as a gift :ohyeah:

Friends, I had asked below qs couple of days back, but got no replies.
Current owners, pls help me out!

1. Do tickers (like CNBC's) move smooth or jerky?
2. I read some person saying do not connect PC/laptop to plasmas, would like to know the reason. i understand this should be safe enough after breaking-in the tv. I ask bcoz I have a sony laptop with HDMI out, and would definitely connect it to the tv for watching movies.
3. If somebody has connected their PC/laptop to this tv through HDMI, does the HDMI also carry sound? Also I think I read on Panasonic website that this tv does not support HDMI 1.3 deep color. Any current owners can throw light?
4. Also are blacks good enough on this tv? I have read that some LCDs have better blacks than some plasmas.

Look forward to your opinions!

1. Do tickers (like CNBC's) move smooth or jerky? Why you are so worried about the tickers? You will be watching the bigger picture, right?

I ask bcoz I have a sony laptop with HDMI out, and would definitely connect it to the tv for watching movies. About not connecting PC to plasma, it is just friendly advice. If you insist on doing it then no problem, but IF you get burn-in the company will not take responsibility whether during or after break-in. Why not go in for an HD media player, if watching movies is all you are going to do through the PC??

Look forward to your opinions!

In short. STOP WORRYING ABOUT THIS. There is absolutely no issue with connecting a PC to a plasma, specially if all you plan to do is watch movies. The reason 42X20D does not make a good PC monitor is that it's resolution is quite low for PC and text really would not look all that great at such a low resolution on a 42" size screen.

WARNING: Don't be too alarmed by this warning, but it is not a good idea to leave stationary images, PC or non PC sourced, displaying on a plasma for very long periods.

sometimes i guess how would playstation3 would fair in hd ready vs full hd as games are all in 720P

Hi Shredder,
Regd tickers, umm I will be looking at them bcoz i watch CNBC for share prices. Also, my view is that tickers are a good test for comparing hdtvs for how well they display fast action. I have also shortlisted LG 42LH60, which is a 100hz tv, and it handles tickers very crisply, so I know it can handle action well. Thus my qs about tickers.
Also, pls let me know if hdmi connection plays audio on this tv or not.

IF tickers are jittery then you can enable trumotion.
Yes HDMI connection plays audio on this TV.

neoonwheels,
How do you find the reflection in X20D? In the showrooms i find that it reflects the lights to an extent it interferes with the picture. Also, how is the image quality during daytime?

Others who have done a comparison, how is the samsung 450 wrt to reflection? And can it match up to the pana in SD scaling? I found the LG plasmas also reflect light sources very heavily.

Reflection is a problem with every other plasma. I have a window opposite the TV (On South side) and the TV suffers a lot. I have curtains through which I control the light and thus I can minimize the reflection to a great extent.

So if you can control the reflection, this TV is mind blowing for its price. At night I switch off all lights for a theatrical experience and this TV amazes me with its deep black levels and crystal clear picture. I have set the contrast at 35 for break-in and still it produces natural picture. Watching football is fun and there is NO IR. It handles action with ease. The other day I watched "Transformers" and it was mind blowing. Crystal clear picture without any trace of IR.

Thanks neoonwheels. That was quick :-)

I have a fluorescent lamp opposite the tv wall which is the regular one we use in the evenings. How do you find the reflection when compared to CRT?

I agree with the images though. Plasmas produce very warm pictures with natural skin tones unlike the lcds which are too bright.

The problem of reflection is mainly with the black color. If the moving picture has some black color portion then you can see reflection in that area. Plasmas are as good as CRTs when the reflection is concerned. The key is to control the lighting. At times I can see the tube light on the opposite wall on the TV in the black color area but then as we see moving pictures (With multiple bright colors), its not that bad.

what is the current market price of 42x20d?i was quoted 38500 with Benetton glass n watch as a gift

there is nothing like market price. it is either MRP or DP. MRP is printed as 51,990 on the piece i got(May, 10) and 49,990(on current pieces). dealers are selling it as high as 44k(ezone etc) and as low as 32.5k(as we got). it depends on
1. how much effort you put in searching the dealer with best price
2. your bargain skills

How long do u call "long period" pls tell in time?

Secondly, how do we connect our PC to this Plasma, can the normal wire which is going in our regular CRT monitor will work or do we have to put in HDMI cable in it?

Regards

Well I would not leave stationary pictures on for more than 10 - 15 minutes. HOw long you can actually leave them on without causing actual burn-in, I don't know and I don't wish to experiment to find out. :)

You can use either a DVI or a HDMI connection to connect the TV with a PC, not sure about the standard 15 pin VGA cable though.

it depends on your machine. if it has an HDMI port as in newer laptops or graphics card then nothing like that, you can use hdmi cable. if it doesnt have HDMI port then you can use the standard 15-pin vga cable(yes the same cable that goes from cpu cabinet to monitor or from laptop to projector). it will give you very decent picture quality but it does not carry sound. so sound will be played on your machine.

make sure you set one of the resolutions supported by ur x20. refer user manual for this.

THanks but does the DVI cable carry sound as told above.
