Building a dedicated HT room on the terrace

I played around with the amp and speakers during the weekend. The dealer had set my front speakers as small which I changed to large and he had set the distance as 17 feet for all the speakers, I changed that to 6 feet for fronts, base/ bass was was set to sub woofer which I changed to front and sub. The speakers sound much better now and for normal listening I can turn off the sub woofers and the TSx have enough base. The towers do sound much better now after the break in.

I watched Dark Knight Rises, Zero Dark Thirty, IMax Under The sea and Paiyya...

This Wednesday, I am going out of town for a wedding and will be back by Monday morning next week... so the HT will be missed and I may also get the cable by then, I am inviting all of you to come by and audition the setup then.

And finally, thank you all for keeping this thread alive...

Prem, Why don't you just calibrate the speaker with Odyssey?
With my Yamaha, YPAO works like charm and really gets best out of my setup.
And they are dead accurate in terms of distance and Level.

Yes, I may have to do that. I will do that with the help of an FM who may visit me soon, I am counting realactivex on this :)

Hi Friend,
Congrats for your new dedicated HT Room on ur terrace. In fact I am too planning to make HT room on my terrace. But I am facing an issue with the ceiling part. Since the building is a three storied we have no permission to make a room with RCC ceiling but with Tin/asbestors etc. Side walls can be made by Bricks.

Please let me know if there is any alternative way to make ceiling to be considered for HT room.
If you have any link/ideas then pls do share.

Regards,
Samrat

You can go ahead with a tin roof at like 13 feet high or so and have a false ceiling made of sound aborbant materials at like 11 feet high. This is infact how olden single screen movie theaters were made!

Thank you Murali, your HT has been my first inspiration, I read your thread extensively.

Samrat, the thread specified by Murali is apt, he doesn't have a permanent ceiling.

I tried the Odyssey, the bass levels have come down, I need to take time and calibrate again. I was in a hurry and didn't really take time with the placements. The music is very clear now with no boom and less bass.

That is great! Yes true, you need to be patient and run the calibration. There should not be any external sound entering room.

I generally run this calibration at late night when there is no external sound from neighbours or family members and I don't even move an inch, touch anything not even move my hand. You never know how sensitive that microphone is...So, I just don't take chances :)

To run the audyssey, In addition to keeping vocal silence,You also need to keep electronic noise minimum, which means that your mobile and cordless phones and other blue tooth devices must be switched off. If possible, even switch off your wireless router

@Prem, first of all congrats on your Home Theater. .. :) . Need to know just one info .... for now .. :) ....Is it possible for you to share the total cost of HT, excluding the equipment, i.e only the civil cost, paint, lights, and any cost that went to the design part ..... etc etc ....

Regards
Sammy

Sammy, the total cost of the room came around 4 Lac Rs and that also includes an attached bathroom. No cost on the design part, I just replicated a room that is on the floor below and removed the unnecessary shelves and windows. The current rates for construction is around Rs. 1600 psft with materials.

An HD demo clip...

Hello prem, What do you do for the roofing of your HT.
Can u post the image if you finish the setup.
I am also planing to have HT on my open terrace.

Hi Swamy / Sammy ....

I ran the Audissey setup and then tweaked it around to my liking, absolutely no horrifying experience on the audio front. Like I said, my furniture is a thick 10 inch foam sofa, may be it absorbs. The Audissey set the sub woofer level to -7.5, I have had atleast 20 folks visit the HT and have watched movie, all of them felt it is a small theater. Booms and crashes are shaking and you will feel it. My attached bath door vibrates a bit when a bass track play, I need to leave it out of the latch to overcome.

Sammy,

The wooden flooring is at 119psft, side skirting at 100 running feet, posters I made, printed at 40Rs and framed at Rs. 200, LED spot lights at Rs. 200 x 7, POP work at 10K, wall fan at Rs. 1700, asian paints royal play at 540/ liter x 5, projector mount at Rs. 900 (availed a ebay coupon)... anything else?

Shanu, since my HT also has an attached bath, I needed to have an overhead tank on the roof, for this reason I have an RCC roof.

Please go through the thread, there are loads of pictures.

We are getting our house constructed for 1275 Rs / sft.
The cost depends on what is offered by the builder and on the materials used.
