DIY Enclosure/Cabinet for PowerAmp & PreAmp

Hi Bibin, I think rohit, omishra, vikoma and I are OK with combined shipping.

Hi Sarang,

These are the members from Pune for the B1 Cabinet GB:

Manvendra Bhangui (mbhangui)
Rohit Nath (rohitmusic)
Sarang Kulkarni (ruenigma)

So i will combine Rohit's cabinets with yours and ship to you. Is that ok?

Thanks,
Bibin

Oh sorry, I meant mbhangui (I often confuse those two for some reason :) ).

Yup sounds good, how much will be the shipping in that case? I am somehow worried with the DTDC surface folks, have had some packages thrown around damaging the goods within (It was a moderately expensive computer case) so was thinking of going DTDC air, if the others agree, that is.

If it is DTDC Air the price will change and will not have much benefit, because they do volumetric calculation

I finally collected the knobs from Jayant's office. Pics. are below. These are very very well made. Excellent stuff!!

Update on the knobs: I'm waiting for Jayant to get back on changes to knob design:
Instead of knurling extending from front edge of the knob to back, the knurling to be done in a band starting a little away from the front edge of the knob
The knurling to end 1 or 2 mm away from the edge of the hole for the grub screw
Putting in an indicator for the volume knob
Adding a cutout at the base of the knob

Thank you all for the kind comments on the quality of the Knobs.

We have taken into consideration various concerns expressed here and now have a revised drawing of what is possible.

With an undercut of 25 mm Dia x 5 mm depth, at the corners we are left with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm which makes me uncomfortable. I would like a minimum wall thickness of 2.5 mm. So either we reduce the undercut to 23 mm dia of possible or increase the 28 mm Dia to 30 mm.

Also the Knurled surface has now been repositioned as desired. This required repositioning of the threaded hole for the grub screw to the position as shown. This will bring the hole within 1.85 mm of the edge.

Pl. ponder over these and let me know your views so that the design may be frozen.

Jayant,

Undercut can be 23mm or 22mm.

Thanks,
Bibin

OK, so the undercut can be 23mm.

Now about the threaded hole for the grub screw. I for one do not like the hole moved towards the top of the knob. As I see it we have multiple choices:

1. Do not have knurling at all and keep the hole at the original position towards the bottom

2. Start the knurling from the top edge like before, have the hole positioned towards the bottom like before BUT end the knurling 1 mm before the edge of the hole

3. Have the hole positioned towards the bottom like before and reduce the width of the knurled band from 10mm as currently drawn up.

4. Have the hole positioned towards the bottom like before, and shift the band towards the top so that there is a disproportionate distance between either end of the band and
the base/knob start

What do you guys think? Let's close this so that we complete the knobs asap.

I prefer option 1. :)

@bibin: I am OK with DTDC ground shipping.

@keith: I have no particular preference regarding the knob. I am OK with whatever you guys think is best.

Guys, opinions will be solicited till Friday and then based on the highest # of votes for each option - we will go with that. Knob GB closes eod Friday.

Of my six pair of knobs, I prefer three knuckled and three bald. Where are these being made? If made in Bangalore, I prefer personal pick up.

They are being made in Bangalore.

In Bangalore, one guy there can pick them up for all the Bangalore GB participants and then you folks can take it from there.

We are soliciting opinions on what ALL the knobs in the GB should be built like.

@keith: is the qty for knobs closed? If it isn't closed yet, I would like to increase my count to 3 pairs instead of 1 pair.

Assuming the final outcome of the group's vote is some knurled and some plain, I will split mine as two pairs plain and one pair knurled. But if the vote is for single type, I will be perfectly OK with the final choice of the group.

Thanks in advance.

Also, who is collecting payments for the knobs?

OK, so the undercut can be 23mm.

Keith,

Our tooling for Knurling requires a 5 mm clearance from one end and the length of the knurled surface would be 5 mm with this tool. The only way to have more flexibility in positioning the hole would be to increase the overall length of the Knob.
