Join the party: Mumbai HFV Meet 2011!

Hi all,

Lets have a quick update:-

1) Organisers have almost everything ready for the meet & are raring to get the 'show on the road' :licklips:

Request all attending to reach by 0900-0930 hours on the 11th, so that

A) Utilise the early arrival for receiving Name Tags from organisers, 'Parameters Analysis Sheets' for reviews & setting - up respective gear
B) Do a sound check to see if 'all systems go' prior to reviews

2) We have now more than sufficient gear, infact we might have to cull some of it to concentrate on gear we usually do not get a chance to listen to. In order to do so, request all attending to make a final confirmed update of what gears they are bringing.

3) Request all attending to get all their associated accessories with their gears, ie: Speakers Wires/Interconnects/Extension chords/spikes, their choice of tracks (in CD & flac format) to showcase their respective gear.

4) To manage a review of most gears in a period of 20-30 minutes, so that post completion of all gears, we can have a DAC shoot-out, which I personally feel is the need of the hour in todays hi-fi requirements & is a dilemma for most of us.

Organisers are waiting for final updated excel sheet of gears available for review, based on which a final call will be taken on what gears we might have to leave out due to shortage of time:o

Request foll to avoid bringing their gear:

Cherian - Pioneer DVD

Rajadeep - old sony speakers

Raghav - Marantz 1601 AVR

Modsy - Vintage Nikko Amp

Hari Iyer - Vintage Sony Amp

Mpw - Phillips FA-931 Amp

Dilip Bajaj - Pls update name & model of your amp/speakers else avoid bringing

Sorry but have to do this as we otherwise are really be going to be short of time, hope you all understand. Idea is to give review of gear that is available in the market, is DIY/Modded.

Thanks
:)

Denom,

While i appreciate the spirit of the meet and the sometimes cut throat nature of human language, i personally would have liked a PM or an SMS telling me that i need not get so and so eqpt..

Call me a softie or old world ..i dont care.. but probably some courtesy would be nice.

Along with telling folks what not to bring, please put up a plan for auditions so that people bringing eqpt would know what their gear will be paired with.

That will also help them decide what their preferences are or weather to get equipment at all or not.. weather any changes to the schedule of auditions are required.

rgds,
mpw

Hi Mpw,

Sorry if you feel offended BUT have politely used the word 'Request' in the beginning of the post itself. Kindly also try to understand that we will most definitely run out of time & be unable to review all gears :o That is a Sad fact that we have to be aware of. We as organisers also do not have time to PM/SMS each & everyone on this matter & in fact it makes sense to make all aware about this on the thread itself. Frankly, I cannot understand why you are offended by my post  as there was no intention to do so.

Fellow organiser Hemant has also got lots of old/vintage gear which he could have also bought to the meet, but there will be no time to do justice to everyone else's gear. Its as simple as that.

Kindly therefore take this in the right spirit Mpw :)

Denom & Santy,

I am in good spirits.

Such good spirits that i had my boss postpone my travel date to Jamnagar from 12th morn to 13th morn so i could stay back a bit late at HFV on Sunday.

Such good spirit that i spend an hour at R Mall ( driving thru all the crappy traffic ) hunting for Blu tack Bostik.. to remove my Titans from their stands, take them to the HFV meet and put them back late at night back home.

I hope this explains.

I only wanted you to know what goes wrong with cut throat posts. Am i the only one ? I dont know.

I am still in good spirits.

regards,
mpw

Haha I wanted to bring my speakers along just to show how bad can bad get :P... Anyway I offered to bring my speakers at a time when there weren't many equips offered... But over time I have seen a good amt of fabulous equips being listed so had already decided against bringing my speakers...

@mpw Chill yaar Denom had good intentions at heart... It just might have come out wrong...

@ everyone Hmm looks like I wont be having the car with me on Sunday(brother needs it)... Anyone crossing Sion area could give me a lift??? Dont mind sharing fuel/toll costs :)...

i have some input

i know you guys must have thought a lot about having bhagwan's speaker as the finale ( and now probably its replacement PMC's )

however im looking at this from another viewpoint

where i stand, i would have the best setup ( probably the PMCs ) play first

this way at least you have something to compare to when you listen to other speakers
You can make out clearly whats missing
It is far easier now to judge a speaker once your mind is opened up to what is possible

This also allows members who want to leave early to go
The majority is here to educate themselves
hear what they normally wont
open their minds to new possibiliites
Once the best is played- the foundation is set

a warfedale , norge, quad, marantz can be heard anywhere else

however this is just me
im no-one

Your efforts in dismantling titans from its stands is certainly acknowledged and appreciated and please be informed that your titans are NEEDED which will form the main stage in one of the demos. Bring them!:clapping:

Yes the idea was thought about. We can hear the best system and keep it as a reference for other systems to follow.

However our listenings and ratings will be heavily biased and we tend to forget that we are auditioning much cheaper systems. They will get bad rating. We also lose interest in listening to simpler systems since they will obviously sound bad compared to the best of the lot.
Further down, we will keep losing tempo slowly as each demo is over, but I feel the tempo should rather build up so that the meet ends with a bang.

Also, we expect members to stay as long as they can unless they have some urgent work. Its only a request. If one by one members move out, it will spoil the fun.

Agree with santy on this point... I mean who would want to listen to anorge after we listen to shanti's... Also having a progressive system would make ppl w8 till the end in anticipation of a big bang before the closing of the event :)... Normal organizing 101... Always keep the best at the end & end with a bang :)...

We are here to expose ourselves to audio
Many may hear something they normally never would

For example budget buyers go into an audio room
Select their budget say 30 k
they listen to speaker only close to their budgets and walk out
Typical Mentality
This in my opinion is not correct
(A frog always thinks his well is the best unless he goes out and explores)

Rarely does that budget buyer ask to listen to a 5 lac rs speaker
I ask WHY?
why do people do this?

By doing this you jave lost a chance to know what a good music should sound like ( its fine if you cant afford it - AT least you have learnt something- you have opened your mind)
if you dont know whats possible you will never grow!

The only reason why one member is coming here is to expose us
His learning curve will probably be close to 0

Our aim for this meet is to know the capabilities of a good system
what we are missing
what we should aspire for

We are not here as judges or reviewers you have to mark and give points to speakers
This is NOT music - its mockery

sorry if i sound harsh( please note: this is not directed at ANYONE - its just a general feeling that i have and learnt about from good friends)
i just needed to het this off my chest

so what if other systems sound crap after the first auditions
well the truth is THEY are crap so they sounded crap

At least in this way we know what were missing

My humble advice and request to all
When you walk into a demo room please hear the best ( even if you cant afford it)
at least youve exposed yourself
Your learning curve starts here
Dont walk out just hearing your budgetted stuff

sorry sir if thats the way you feel
Music is not supposed to be heard this way
BY MAKING people stay!

Brothers I slightly disagree with this. Listening sessions should be without preconceived anticipation and expectation. There are lots of surprises in Audiophile hobby. Magma is right if one wants to evaluate the systems a good system is a good starting point (As I guess many might not have heard high end system, just guessing I may be wrong) and it can be a reference point. Think of it as a scale if one wants to measure length of something you need a scale with markings on it same for audio systems.
All the best for the meet and regards

If i dont get my Vintage Sony Amp then how i am going to demo my DIY TL speakers? Can i borrow some one else hi-end amplifier to demo it?

Is any body else getting a Transmission Line speaker? I would like to compare my TL speakers with other TL speakers (Yes i will like an Apples to Apples comparision). The idea is to demonstrate the Transmission Line Technology whee i believe most of the members would not have heard as commercial availability of this technology is very less.

If Bhagwan is getting the PMC Transmission Line speaker, then is there a possibility of comparing it with my DIY Transmission Line speakers. This will help me to improve on my designs and Knowledgebase. Pls. advise. If yes, then i will like the organizers to take a note of it and arrange gears accordingly.

I will like to second this comment by saying that DIYers like me where for us building high-end speakers is more of a passion which can be advantegous for music lovers, will get their speakers compared to other professional high-end speakers. This will not only alllow us to rethink our total designing concepts but also add to our knowledgbase and help us ponder where we went wrong in the design. By not considering DIYers for review will destory the very purpose of members like me who are visiting the event

Just to give some direction to the proceedings santy & Denom & hemant.. please share a Agenda or a plan of action.. for example 930 our meeting starts.. 0935 we play the National Anthem .. by 945 AM maybe Mr Shyam Bajaj can say a few words followed by the organizers.. to set the ball rolling..

The sequence of events may be planned by the organizers and decided in advance.

Anyways. Here is what i will get for the meet ;-

Paradigm Titan Monitor Front Speakers
Stands for the above ( made by Magma )
My old pair of speaker cables ( DAC 12 AWG )
Belkin Surge protector ( to connect upto 8 devices at a time )

Should you wish, i can reach by 9 AM to help out with whatever connections etc..

rgds,
