LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

VGA to HDMI??? are you sure? Is it a branded cable??
Because HDMI carries a digital signal whereas VGA carries an analog signal. So I am not sure if this is possible. That is why there are these conversion boxes which convert the signal. I know from personal experience that HDMI to DVI is possible and works (albeit without audio). Does your laptop have a DVI port? If it does then get an HDMI to DVI converter/cable.
If your HDMI to VGA cable does not work (and I don't think it will work!!) then take it to the shop and make them demonstrate how it works.... if they can't do this then ask for a refund.

i think all plasmas have heating issue ?

i disagree with the same. i have been using plasmas for years and never faced any heating issue, if there is a fault problem can happen, otherwise they do not have any heating issues.

Better the get the unit checked up if you feel it is heating .

My heating is within tolerable limits. My old CRT used to heat up more. However, after a month of running regular TV, and sometimes not taking the proper precautions (watching letterbox movies, playing games with HUD) I am finally seeing the effects of bad Plasma behavours. Happens most accutely when I switch to a non plugged input mode so then the streakes and phospor smudges become visible in a pitch dark room. I have started the boring but essential task of running the breakin slides (never ran them yet). Hopefully I will attain screen uniformity soon. Anyone knows what I am taking about

search the forum on plasma break in,burn in and IR, you will get the answer to all your questions.

PK550 heats up a lot. Not hot to touch but radiates heat. Anyone felt the same?

I would say is warms up. I had not owned a HDTV (LCD or PDP) before. so not sure whether its OK. I mean, it wont burn my skin per say.

I had seen some pics of PK550 internals (courtesy to someone in this forum). What I could not see is a cooling fan. As your TV was opened, can you confirm whether LG has an internal cooling fan?
Absence of fan(active cooling) may explain slight heat and the absolute silent operation.

On the back, lower half remains relatively cool while upper half is more warmer. The glass in front gets warm but uniformly.
I made this observation after viewing SD/HD content via HDMI for about 5 hours with 98 contrast.
The TV usually runs non-stop for 10+ hours on weekend without any issue.

Though there might be device that converts VGA to HDMI, it might be bit expensive as it should include an ADC.
PK550 has a VGA port. So why not directly connect it via VGA? I do it for my Win laptop and I view at 1080p resolution without any issue.

I also use a DVI-HDMI convertor for connecting my Macbook to PK550. Even that works out.
And I dont see any difference between the two connection.
Made "I" bold as others may differ with that opinion or I have not made enough research myself. I enjoyed movies from both ;)

In both case, I have to get audio via separate cable.

PS: I do not have any copy-protected content. HDCP content requires secure path for video/audio to play. That is the only reason I can think of for using DVI/HDMI.

Opss, i was unaware that the PK550 had a VGA port as well.. my mistake costed me Rs. 350 for the converter cable. Anyways thank you so much Macdot for yor reply.

A note to the future buyers of this TV:

Croma is giving 2 years extended warranty on this TV for Rs 3K. Compare it with 2 years AMC from LG that costs Rs 14K. I personally feel that just 1 year manufacturer's warranty being given with this TV is pathetic (even cheap mobile phones come with 1 yr warranty) and buyers should go for the extra warranty.

If you have already bought it from Croma, you can still buy the ext. warranty if the date of purchase is within 30 days.

I am not aware if other retailers also have such schemes.

Just a word on the heating. It's not bad. In fact only once the TV runs for > 5 hours at a stretch that I feel the heat. No worries.
