LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

Got the replacement. Tried adjusting contrast and brightness with Wall.E BR disc. Well the set just couldn't get the contrast right. It has to be tweaked from service menu.

Otherwise HD picture is gorgeous as always.

Ordered mine yesterday from Vijay Sales (Mumbai). I negotiated them down to 62.5k for the plasma along with a 320 GB HDD which I thought was part of the deal. Surprisingly the billing was done for 60.5k for the TV with 2k for the HDD (which I did not really need). However I was so tired by the end of the ordeal that I just went along with it. They promised me its in stock at the warehouse before I paid, and now its 'delivery in 3 days since it has to be ordered in'. I just hate the whole process of buying anything in India - no one has any idea of the product they are selling. I had gone to Vijay Sales earlier followed by Chroma - horrible service at both places. Finally found a good dealer in Sony Mony but he would not do the 0% EMI thingy which meant I went back to Vijay Sales and got it. Chroma people did not even know if they had such a plasma for sale. Their technical knowledge of products is worse than a 3 year old.

Shockingly the worst response was from the LG customer care to whom I was directed to call for extended warranty. They first insisted that there is no such model as the 50PK550R for a number of times. Finally they say its the 50PK550 and I was causing them a lot of confusion. After that they insist that there is no such thing as an extended warranty but only a AMC which would not include any parts in any case. It got even worse since they said the AMC details could be given by the local service centre but the number they gave me was of just 7 digits (normal numbers are 8 digits) and would not believe me when I told them the number is not true. Its just sickening to get anything done at all - and this after paying a good 60 grands to the company for such shit service.

The only reason I went in for the TV in any case is the splendid reviews given by you fellows here and also the fact that LG service seems to be decent / helpful in following up complaints. Lets see when I finally do get my telly.

Note for those who want to buy electronics - go only on weekdays, during work hours. If there is something like a worst muhurat to buy something, then do go at that time. You are likely to get some sort of decent service instead of running around the sales person asking if the order is placed / when would delivery be.

Is any PK550 owner whose set is working without any issue from days one?
I'm having feeling that everybody got some issues and many of them have got few replacments of their set also. Dont know why LG is not able to make a problem free Plasma like their LCD which have compratevely less issues.

/A

Plasmas are notorious for throwing up different issues. Once you get a good toy you'll love to play with it for a long time.

Congrats Yash.

LG customer care people are the dumbest surviving brains on this earth. I called them just once and swore never to interact with them.

I think they are equipped only to take complaints and not to answer queries.

Not sure about others but I have the sub-contrast set to 165 and sub-brightness set to 115. Gives a very good picture with nice blacks and contrast. It may differ according to personal preferences but that's the best setting I found.

Thanks dotMac, will keep in mind. This thread is really full tips and tricks from buying to taking care of your PK550. Keeping my fingers crossed for my panel lottery today :)

What is it with LG Plasmas? So many replacements, so many issues. Are the LG Quality Control guys sleeping or worse drinking on the job?

Brand new panel that was broken!? Shudder...I am awaiting delivery tomorrow and the installation in a couple of days thereafter. I doubt I will be getting much sleep now since I was already told off for buying a plasma when 'everyone knows that they are outdated technology and LCDs are better' as told by friends and family. I was hoping to prove them wrong but it seems LG wont let me.

Keeping fingers crossed for a good piece. How was the panel broken? Transportation fault?

Any newbie who wants to upgrade TV from CRT stay away from LG 50PK550 there too many reliability issues with it.

IMHO it seems after all "Indianisation" as in case of other product manufacturers has proved to be a big mistake for LG as well. They should have simply imported the models being made availiable to people in US (with only changes to power supply).

No matter what these guys do but they are not able to provide the quality product being made availiable to people in US and Europe at a discounted price then us.

I think we will have to live for some more years till India decides to adopt WTO norms completely wherein the duty to import any item shall be reduced to max 5%. But the current government dosent seem to even consider this at the moment, they are busy digesting the CWG funds (Rumoured to be around Rs 8000 crores).

Result is that we have to pay a premium for substandard products.
