LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

friends

i am in hunt for lg 50pk550, will buy in the duessera and depavali time.
waiting for the discount's Mela to start.

I really dont think the festival time will make any diff to LG Plasma prices. Thats a tech they're not promoting aggressively, and most buys have been on basis of word-of-mouth (thanks hifivision) and/or tech reviews, mostly by videophiles. They will probably reduce prices on standard CCFL and edge lit LCD TVs as Junta think thats the "Best", and its a perception perpetrated by the dealers as well. "Saab Plasma purana technology hai, koi leta nahin. aap LED TV lijiye...latest hai" (while pimping a edge lit LCD TV with horrible black levels and blooming issues)

Actually, LED TV will be a good proposition if manufactures bring down their prices. Even good LCD's like Samsung C650 cost a bomb.

Saw the Sony HX80 3D combo offer and it looks inviting.

I'll hold on to the PK550 until next year - better tech and price drops. Samsung has plans to present 42" OLED in 2011. :licklips: No no, I don't have the money!

Enjoy the day ^_^

I doubt that we will get LCD or LED TVs in 50" sizes for less than 70K in near future. So if big screen size and low price is a requirement, I do not see anything beating plasmas in the coming months.

Agree. I don't remember seeing any 50" LCD/LED. They are either 46", 47" or 52".

Here's my Plasma wish for 2011:
1) Samsung
- fix inaccurate redishness to picture
- fix motion judder
2) Panasonic
- handle SD better (personally not seen floating black)
- make it affordable
3) LG
- better blacks
- not to forget there's something called calibration technique (pls don't be intrigued by the word)
4) Do not run after 3D.

hi,

i'm thinking of buying pk550, but i've been reading many negative comments about IR and other issues, i'm new to plasma thing, i wanted to know is IR a permanent thing for plasmas, i.e even after 200-300 hrs i'll get IR? also is there any guide for new buyers of steps to follow to maintain the new pk550? and does the owners honestly suggest i buy pk550 over lcd? Thanks

Hi,

Feedback on my PK550 as of today is as follows, I have been running the break in slides for an hour every day and settings are as per Shiju's guidelines in earlier posts. Until last week I was using the AV cable for watching all movies which are in Divx/Xvid /AVI format. Picture quality was very bad with the AV cable (used to have blocks of different shades of black/grey appearing on the black images) On Saturday I purchased a Component cable for the video out put and optic cable for the sound from SP road. Now I have noticed a day and night difference in the picture quality but the problem is there are green dancing pixels appearing on the Black images which was never the case earlier when I was using the AV cable ( the green pixels are visible only when I go close to the screen approx 3 feet) From Normal viewing distance they are not visible.

Thats all for now. will update progress frequently.

VGA to HDMI??? are you sure? Is it a branded cable??
Because HDMI carries a digital signal whereas VGA carries an analog signal. So I am not sure if this is possible. That is why there are these conversion boxes which convert the signal. I know from personal experience that HDMI to DVI is possible and works (albeit without audio). Does your laptop have a DVI port? If it does then get an HDMI to DVI converter/cable.
If your HDMI to VGA cable does not work (and I don't think it will work!!) then take it to the shop and make them demonstrate how it works.... if they can't do this then ask for a refund.

Hi Shredder,

Came across this product
USB to DVI External Video Card, High Resolution, 1600 x 1200 - SW-USBDVI-HR, $79.95

Can i connect this video card to my laptop and use a DVI to HDMI converter cable to my PK550. If this is possible how can i connect the sound to my AVR??

The line bleeding which I notice during the credits rollup at the end of a movie (especially white text over a black background) is terrible and sickening. Any other PK owners notice this. Would it be right for me a raise a complain on this issue?

HI
Sorry about the delay but I just came across your post right now.
I am really not familiar with USB to DVI technology, but it should work i.e. if the video signal is taken from USB to DVI then theoretically, the DVI to HDMI will carry the signal. But you have to ask yourself.... is it really worth it? In INR this thing would work out to nearly 4k. And the resolution this thing supports is 1600x1200, which falls a little short of FullHD (1920x1080), so you may get black bars on either side.
I am guessing that the main reason you want to connect your laptop to plasma is to watch movies and view photos (since it is not really advisable to use a plasma for normal CPU work). So in that case why not go for an HD media player? There are quite a few of them in the market and you don't really have to break the bank to get one. For around 6k you can get Seagate Theatre+ (make sure it is the + version and not the older version), Asus O!Play R1, iOmega HD Director Edition, Zinwell ZP500, NBOX, and a host of others. Most of these players support networking and even wi-fi in some. If you cannot get any one of these players in your area for under 6k, then just buy from eBay.
As for connecting sound to AVR, I'm not really sure but I guess a simple 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack should do the trick i.e. connect one end to your laptop's headphone out and the other to your AVR if it has a 3.5mm receiver. Otherwise you can use a 3.5MM Stereo Male to 2 RCA Male Audio Cable. Too many ifs and buts..... just get a HD media player if your purpose is to watch movies and vieew photos.:)

if I try to notice line bleeding, it will be visible. If I try to enjoy movie, I do not see line bleeding.

Watch the movie not the end credit ;)

On a serious note, not really. I see line bleed only if I look for it. I think it also depends on how the set is calibrated.

SO basically I take it as a shortcoming of the Plasma tech and shut up. Would u guys have a URL from where I can download a calibration DVD.

Got it from Ratatouille BR disc. It's really basic but works just fine.

What are your current settings on SD and HD?

Am going to check out the Samsung 46C650 LCD and 50C6500 Plasma. Maybe I need another set too.

Hey thanks, will try it out when I'm back homein Bangalore. Right now I'm in the heart of the Mothership. LG's factory in Gr. Noida

Did you guys visit the LG's factory; or just Heynownow?
Share your experience please.

Didn't visit this forum in long time. Finally got my first car delivered yesterday and was busy with its arrangements ;)

The TV is doing well and now two(50" TV and the car) of my dreams are realized. (Though I must admit the 50V20 was the 50" TV I see in my dreams :D ; Hope one day I will get that). Getting a 9.1 surround sound is next. But no money left in my pocket :p

Anyways I am enjoying my TV. Atleast watching a couple of HD movies on weekend. Will be getting a Mac Mini in couple of months as HTPC. Will update on this soon.
