Guys, i own a LG 42LW6500, i don't know if you people are aware that LG 42LW6500/5700, has the DVR functionality, ie., it allows you to record live TV programmes on the hard disk connected to USB Port 1. The info about this is mentioned in the user manual provided on the CD.

It says if you connect a HDD > 40 GB and <= 1TB to USB port 1 and press the Record button on remote, then you should get a initialisation message that "HDD will be formatted for use as DVR" and if everything goes well then you can record TV programmes on the HDD and play it back.

I tried by connecting new 1TB Seagate GoFlex HDD after formating to NTFS, since it was mentioned in manual that there should not be any pre-loaded software on the HDD, to USB 1.
Got the message like recognising USB drive and it recognised it as a USB drive 1, i pressed Record button on the remote nothing happened as was mentioned in the manual. I was able to browse the drive but couldn't get it to initialise as a DVR by pressing the Record button.

As i researched on the net i could find users worldwide are successfully using this feature, except India. I even tried updating the firmware to latest 04.01.23 but couldn't get the DVR initialisation working.

If anybody has got any success in using this feature, please share it.

Is your hard drive USB powered or has an external power adapter? If its the former, it could be insufficient power from the USB port. See if it works with a USB thumb drive first. If it does, then its a USB power issue.

5700 have edge led (led plus) backlight and 6500 have only edge led.

Anybody knows the difference between them ?

Actually there is no difference between the two on that count. They are the same, just confusion created by lg documentation. Interestingly they also say that 6500 has local dimming, with edge lit how much local dimming can you have ?

The difference if any is in the contrast ratio and the refresh rate that is where 6500 scores better, specially in the former.

Yes its actually micro dimming and not local dimming. Sony NX720 also has a similar EDGE LED with micro dimming setup. And as you mentioned, it helps with contrast.

Thanks for the reply, I think it is wise to wait for few more days.

BTW, I saw an ad in TOI today that both LG has Samsung have started their festival offers( 15th Sept to 31st Oct). Samsung seems to be having better deals than LG. But I am more inclined to buy LG42LW6500, I contacted one local dealer in Pune and he is quoting 85K :licklips:

I checked up about this feature at Reliance Digital - Thane and according to them their is no such feature of recording on USB or external hard disk.
though their is a recording button on a remore but they said this is a dummy button

IS the contrase ration realy visibal,i mean the difference between 5000000 and 9000000 is noticebal ? .Few sajjested me that it does not make any difference ( due to human eye).Even responce time 2 and 2.4 ms not catching.
Motion cliarity index may be important when high speed action is on .

What is your opinion

Upon further research on this "Recording to HDD(DVR)" feature, i think this feature has been disabled for India. This can be enabled by accessing service menu of the TV as is explained in the link - http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=20540589

For anyone interested there is a way to enable several missing features on this tv. I found a way to access the service menu's with a Harmony remote and checked it all out.

The only one normal users would be interested in is the EZ Adjust menu which this link shows how to manually add the code needed for a Harmony Remote. Access password is 0413.

Here's what I found most interesting:

Tool Option 2
Local Dim Menu set to 1 to enable Local Dimming Options in the TV Video setup menu
I have no idea why this option is disabled in the first place.

Tool Option 3

DVR Ready Set to 1 to enable Time Machine for dvr like functions on USB
This does enable Time Machine option when you put a usb drive on usb port 1 but my 4Gb stick didn't work. I'm not sure if it's because you have to use a USB Hard drive or this option doesn't work at all on the LV5500. Hopefully someone else can verify, I want this feature!

THX Set to 1 to enable THX video calibration options.
Adds the THX video mode like higher end models have. Not available on DLNA/MediaLink

THX Media Director Set to 1 to enable but not sure what it does.

Tool Option 5
Channel Browser Set to 1 to enable preview thumbnail grid of all channels.
I get thumbnail boxes for all channels but it's unable to load a preview from Cable, so it may not work on US cable. Also noticed when enabled a button with Korean words show up in the menu?

You can also enable 3D options in Tool Option 5 menu but I don't see anything new anywhere. The LW5600 is the same tv but with passive 3d, I don't know if the screen is different and/or it has a seperate processor for 3D but these options probably do nothing for LV5500.

There's also an option for CNET TV but enabling it I didn't see any new CNET features anywhere.

Also beware as everyone always says, there are settings that can brick your TV if you change the wrong thing, so be carefull. From what I could tell the EZ Adjust Menu is pretty safe but I didn't change the things I didn't know what they were.

I pretty much keep the True motion turned off but still the movies looks little cheesy more tv series like due the smooth motion of picture. This should be because of high frequency, i suppose.

Is there any ways to get back movie like motion? I have 42LW6500.

Thanks

Anyone wanting to buy in Pune can visit the LG store in Kalyani Nagar.

PS: Just got 2 clip on 3D glasses at 800 bucks each!

The contrast ratio is noticeable in dark scenes, otherwise not much. Didn't really check for response time differences.

Those are marketing numbers and nothing else. The actual contrast ratio of LW6500 is around 1200-1500:1, LW5600 is about 300/400 less than that I assume. So yes the difference is noticeable not a staggering difference.
